Fortunately, there was an episode tonight after Columbo.

A wounded soldier was brought in but they couldn't save his leg. He played college football before he was drafted and was a runner.

What was the soldier's name?
What college did he play for?

Bonus: what football strategy was he going to use to get well and move on with his life?

Hint: He was a black man.

Well, since Coop already won the next question I'll chime in on bonus land. "Spearchucker" was a racial slur in that era but for this particular character, if I recall correctly, he was said to have the nickname for his javelin throwing ability in his college days.

Cheers,

Figured that one would be easier. Was hoping you might get the second part, which I guess I should have led with.

***There were black doctors at the time, just none ever recorded as stationed in M*A*S*H* units. They may have worked either further behind the lines or at aid stations, so to be true to the time, he was written out. In the movie M*A*S*H*, "Spearchucker" Jones was a corpsman.

There is your useless fact(s) for the day.

One was that the writers (producers) learned that there were no black doctors in the military at that time and they were trying to maintain some sort of truth to the show. I'm glad that there were black doctors later. One became a doctor at the VA and was one of my doctors who helped figure out what was wrong with me and fixed it. Which is one reason I'm alive today, and healthy. Well, good doctors and God.

Why was the character of "Spearchucker" Jones written out of the series? (There are 2 answers I will accept for this.)

Bonus question: To what did he owe his nickname to?

Well this is seems to have stumped the bunch. I was looking for Lt. Willis from S2 (1973). He was played by Burt Young who went on to play Paulie in Rocky in 1976 and won an Oscar.

Sorry coop, not the one I was looking for. That was in S10, I'm looking for someone that was before Flagg. It did not involve a theft if that helps any.

Coop:

You are "on the right track". British Major...just need the last name of the major. Yes, Hawkeye was the Dr. he spoke with.

Think about what the British commander's troops were drinking, and this may assist you with finding the name. :)

Tbucks:
Great guess!

He was the CO from a British unit, a major, I believe. Have no idea about his name. Hawkeye was all upset about how he was talking to the wounded.

Although not commander, it sounds like Sidney Freedman.

Name: Sidney Theodore Freedman
Rank: Major
Nationality: Jewish (in his role and in real life)
MASH Dr talking to him: Winchester

Glad I checked in early today, as my day off.
BTW, Ceeline, good ? regarding Charles Winchester's dog's type/name! I looked, but was stumped!

In one episode an officer/commander was listening to his soldiers read their mail
from home.

I need Nationality, rank, and name of officer/commander.

For a "kicker" to the question:
What MASH doctor was talking to the above commander?

This should be relatively easy if you remember the episode. :)

Staff Sergeant Luther Rizzo (played by G. W Bailey), maybe??

Since I am from Louisiana (but born much further North of the Cajun (coon-A_ _) line,
I am familiar with "Cajun" culture.

G.W. Bailey is actually a native of Port Arthur, TX., but a great Cajun accent!

I'm half way behind you, for whatever that's worth. You have a 2 year jump on me. For the first year so so, I wasn't posting anything but prices.

Oh, sorry, I'm out of ticker-tape. Most people today wouldn't know what ticker-tape is, or was.
