The author works with a 5-letter word with no duplicate letters, and each guess will be labeled with the number of letters found in the word. It's sorta like mastermind, only because this is using common words, there isn't anything telling you the placement of the letters.

NOTE to Authors: Be careful not to have duplicate letters like the word "fence". Also, don't get cute with proper nouns, etc. Players can have a hard time with common words just as easily as quirky ones.

Here is an example game with the word "MANGE":

U L T R A - 1
N E W S Y - 2
Y E A S T - 2
S P A R K - 1
T R A M P - 2
S T O R M - 1
A L O N E - 3
N E A R S - 3

From the 4th and 8th words guessed (SPARK & NEARS) you can see that both "E" and "N" are in the word. Eliminating "K" and "P".
From the 2nd word (NEWSY), eliminate the letters "S", "W", and "Y".
From the 3rd and 4th words (YEAST & SPARK), either "A" or "T" and "A" or "R" is correct. Since both "R" and "T" cannot be correct from the first word (ULTRA), then "A" must be correct, and you can eliminate "L", "R", "T", "U".
From the 5th word (TRAMP), "M" must be correct also, and from the 6th word (STORM) eliminate the "O".
So, we have "A","E","M",and "N" and available are "B C D F G H I J Q V X Z
".

E N A C T - 3 Eliminated the "C".
A M E N D - 4 Eliminated the "D".
M A N E H - 4 Eliminated the "H".
F L A M E - 3 Eliminated the "F".
M A N G E - Answer found!!!

Okay, let's play!!!

ND is our winner, picking the one anagram out of SEVEN for that combination of letters. When I started the game, I thought there were five, but you folks came up with TEPAL and PELTA as well. Learn something every day...

Anyway, ND tracked down my word, and I honestly had that as my word from the very beginning. No cheating the players by switching to a different anagram as they are guessed and eliminated.

_ _ _ _ _ (5-elimination) LET THE ANAGRAMS BEGIN!!!!!!!

L E A R N - 3 Off to a good start, SandOwl
C H U M P - 1 Critic doesn't come up empty.
W A T E R - 3 SandOwl follows up a triple with another.
---------------
E A R T H - 3 SandOwl searchs the globe, and comes up with 3 on E A R T H and W A T E R
H E A R D - 2 I H E A R D Critic thought she had a clue, but was mistaken
---------------
P L A T E - 5 Sand Owl comes up with the correct 5 letters... just not in the correct order.
---------------
L E A P T - 5 Critic tried a prodigious leap, but fell short. Too bad. :-(
P L E A T - 5 Sand Owl tries another tack, but just crumples
--------------- [I've got two more. 50-50 chance for two guessers]
P E T A L - 5 Nice try, critic. It's the other one.
P E L T A - 5 Didn't come up with this til you brought it up, SandOwl. For sure, it's not mine, but I'll add it to the list of anagrams. Still one out there.
---------------
T E P A L - 5 Critic finds another anagram I didn't know about. Sheesh. That's 6 so far, and mine still not guessed. I'd give one hundredth of a drachma for someone to come up with the answer.
