AUTEC COMPLEX ~ FLORIDA
The Atlantic Undersea Test and Evaluation Center Complex is located relatively close to West Palm Beach in Florida and the Bahamas and operated by the US Navy. It performs some of the most advanced tests and training sessions for undersea techniques. It covers pretty much every aspect of this field, from calibration to construction. In other words, the place can be described as one of the most advanced laboratories in the world, with three dimensional operations. It consists of three different test places – one for weapons, one for acoustic purposes and one for FORACS. All these tests take place underwater, on an almost 200 km long and 30 km wide area with depths that can reach 2 km. The place is often referred to as TOTO among the people working there. The general purpose of the base is to train and certify captains and crew members for submarines. At the same time, the professionals here test the most sophisticated weapons and their accuracy.
History The US Navy requirement and necessity for a wide area to test various weapons and equipments became critical during the ’40s and the ’50s. World War II was a great opportunity to discover this necessity. In 1958, the US Navy selected a group of professionals to choose the most appropriate spot for such a base. The spot was picked for its relief and perfectly natural environment and characteristics. The place is U shaped and somehow protected by numerous islands and reefs. The only major connection with the ocean is in the northern side. The environment was perfect. The place was protected against the natural disturbances from the ocean, turning it into an ideal place for tests and practices.
The actual construction began later, in 1964. A big part of it was ready in 1965, allowing the first cadres to show up. The first range was ready in 1966 – the one for weapons. The others two were ready in 1968 and 1969. The rest of the base was entirely built by 1974. Ever since then, it has managed to remain among the most sophisticated and advanced laboratories in the world. The constant improvements and upgrades stayed in touch with the technology, ensuring a proper evolution of AUTEC Complex over the years.
Most of the most important facilities at AUTEC Complex were renamed in the memory of some of the US Navy heroes, such as the Jacobson Hall, the Roger L. Glei Chapel or the Shafer Brothers Hall.
Housing According to the position of this base, the housing system at AUTEC Complex is entirely on site. It is run by the US Navy, without any privatized spots. Since the place is relatively isolated from human communities, getting off site accommodation is practically impossible. When dispatched here, the troops are automatically assigned with a sponsor and a home. The students are hosted in specific buildings, in larger rooms. The superiors and the long term inhabitants live in different buildings, with more advanced facilities.

Abraham Lincoln Capital Airport
Abraham Lincoln Capital Airport (IATA: SPI, ICAO: KSPI, FAA LID: SPI) is a joint civil-military public airport in Sangamon County, Illinois, United States.
It is located three nautical miles (6 km) northwest of the central business district of Springfield, the capital city of Illinois. The airport is owned by the Springfield Airport Authority.
The airport home to Capital Airport Air National Guard Station, a 91-acre (370,000 m2) facility on land leased from the Springfield Airport Authority.
It is home to the 183d Fighter Wing (183 FW), an Illinois Air National Guard unit operationally gained by the Air Combat Command (ACC) and State Headquarters, Illinois Air National Guard. Historically a fighter unit, the 183 FW consists of 321 full-time and 800 part-time military personnel (total strength 1,321).
The 183 FW was directed to divest itself of its fighter aircraft pursuant to a Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) 2005 decision, and in October 2008, the last of the 170th Fighter Squadron's fifteen F-16C/D Fighting Falcon aircraft departed Capital Airport AGS for redistribution to other Air National Guard fighter wings. The 183 FW remains in place at Capital Airport AGS minus a flying mission while the U.S. Air Force, the Air Combat Command and the Air National Guard determine a new role and mission set for the wing.
The Illinois Air National Guard State Headquarters, Expeditionary Combat Support (ECS) elements of the 183 FW, the 217th Engineering Installation Squadron and the F110 engine Centralized Intermediate Repair Facility (CIRF) also remain in place at Capital Airport AGS

Anniston Army Depot
Located in Bynum, Alabama, Anniston Army Depot is one of the major facilities run and operated by the US Army, It is responsible for multiple depot operations, such as repairing various vehicles or storing chemical weapons. The depot covers more than 65 square km and hosts over 2,000 employees on site. Although it has the capacity to repair a lot of different vehicles, including tanks, its primary mission has always been to store weapons and ammunition. When it comes to chemical weapons, you can count mustard gas, the VX nerve agent or even Sarin. There are only seven depots that can host chemical weapons in the United States of America and this is one of them.
Mission The general mission of this depot is to repair and produce military vehicles and store ammunition and supplies. The range of activities is widely varied. It mostly depends on the latest US Army upgrades and improvements.
History The history of this site dates back to 1940, when the War Department was seriously looking for a spot to establish in the northern part of Alabama. By the end of the year, the authorities picked Anniston, therefore the US Army acquired more than 10,000 acres. However, the site was later extended to around 15,000 acres. The actual construction began in the first months of 1941 and included igloos, warehouses, a few administrative buildings and magazines. By the end of 1941, the whole depot was operated by four individuals only. It was still in its early months. By the end of 1942, it grew to almost 4,500 employees.
The missions at Anniston Army Depot kept changing as time went by. The US Army continuously upgraded its weaponry, not to mention about the new models that kept showing up, especially during the Cold War. The depot constantly evolved to fulfill its mission though, whether its objectives implied storing weapons or repairing tanks. Some of the major names that were repaired at this depot include the M48A1, M47, M48A2C and M48 tank models.
The chemical weapons got a spot at Anniston Army Depot starting with 1963. By the ’80s, it was responsible with missile maintenance as well. Operation Iraqi Freedom was one of the most important operations led by the US Army it supported through a very advanced armor kit. These days, the depot brags with more than 500,000 tons of various supplies in operations, as well as over 500 combat vehicles produced every year. It holds around 25,000 jobs in the area, therefore it plays a major role in the local economy.
Units Although there are more than 25,000 workers at Anniston Army Depot, there are no major units hosted on site. The facility is not operated by military units. Instead, there are a few tenant units deployed there, but their assignments are usually temporary. Many of the employees are civilians. Some of the most important tenant organizations hosted on site include the Chemical Activity, the Center of Military History, the Defense Munitions Center or the Defense Distribution Depot. These are no military units though.

Camp Leatherneck ~ Helmand Province, Afghanistan
Camp Leatherneck is the United States Marines base that is the home base of most Marine operations in Afghanistan. The base started out as a rather austere place to visit with few amenities for the troops, but in recent months some changes have been made to make their stay a little more pleasant. National Geographic Explorer even filmed an episode detailing life at Camp Leatherneck which first aired in January 2010.
Camp Leatherneck was officially dedicated on May 29, 2009, and originally housed around 4,000 marines and civilians in large tents with hundreds of cots in each one. Camp Leatherneck is now home to over 20,000 Marines and civilians, and many upgrades to the camp have been made in recent months. There are now one story pre-fabricated buildings that can house about 2,000 people in each building, which is certainly an upgrade to the 20 man tents this base started out with.
