Never call the police on yourself for this type of accident. If they don't have to file a report, they are less likely to write a ticket. Do leave contact information. Do call your own insurance company and give them the other vehicle license plate, make and model. But most of all - take pictures IMMEDIATELY of the vehicle from all angles, as well as your own. People will lie and say you caused damage you didn't. Pictures of both vehicles help support you didn't damage the hood when you hit the back bumper.

It depends on where the car was parked. Private parking lot is an issue since the police will not come and file a report.

I would probably try contacting the owner, if possible. If not I would probable contact police and letting them know what happened, because you do not know if there are any camera's around or not.

This happened to me, I was backing out of a parking spot in the garage where I work. I was driving my boyfriend's big pickup and I was worried about backing up too far and hitting a car behind me... instead I felt a bump on the right front quarter panel... I got out to see and it was a tiny 2 seater sportscar - Mercedes... the bumper of my bf's's truck hit just in front of the door handle and the dent/scrape continued to the wheel well of the mercedes... yikes! after i stopped hyperventilating - I contacted my insurance company and gave them the full description of what happened, and the license plate number and description of the car I hit to open a claim for the damage. Then I left a note for the car owner with the insurance claim number and my contact information as well as the insurance company and claim department phone number to call... It took 3 days before the owner called me - and she blew it off like no big deal. Then I get a call from the claim adjuster who wanted to take photographs of the truck. I asked why and it was because the owner of the mercedes was claiming damage from the front of her car - said something must have flew up on her hood from my truck! needless to say the claim adjuster was now investigating the oher person for insurance fraud. To this day whenever I see her she makes rude comments. Most recently she said to me, "You caused permanent damage to my mercedes! - It was pristine before you smashed into it". Bull crap - I saw it last week and you can't tell it ever had any damage at all, not to mention the fact she committed fraud when she tried to get the dings on her hood fixed by my insurance company. Some people are just that way. Made me wish I hadn't left a note or anything. You couldn't see any damage on my bf's truck and nobody saw the incident.

What if you hit a parked car on purpose? just asking. My girlfriends' car was struck/hit/clipped/rubbed at the grocery store yesterday and the person drove off!! how pissing!! The bumper was scratched and paint removed and I'm a bit upset about it. May that person and their family and extended family all be stricken with a multitude of maladies consecutively and die horrible deaths!!

Dropped my son off at college, and as I prepared to leave (on my motorcycle) I watch this guy pull in, then back out - neither very well... and the car next to him rock like the dickens.

He backs all the way out and gingerly heads to another spot - when the one he had was closer and just fine (if you can park a vehicle worth a crap). I continue to watch, hoping he'll do the right thing. Nope.

I write down a description of the kid, then his plate and vehicle info, date/time, then wrote "I witnessed this man hit your car. You'll see the damage by... it is rather substantial (he really creased the body). Damage to his is visible on the front right. Please call me if you or the police need more info..X..."

Didn't realize college security handles those things. They called me a few hours later and I went back and filled out a report. As I left, the security guard said "hey, thanks for detailed info. Putting the time let us see it on camera, but we wanted your statement to make sure this kid pays". Seems they have a preponderance of hit and runs (or as OH calls them, "hit/skip").

Leaving the scene of an accident is a crime. We can discuss all day if clipping a parked vehicle is an accident or not, but again, damaging someone elses property and leaving is a crime.

I actually did this recently. My front end clipped his rather large tire that was sticking out from the side of his truck. I walked in the small store and found the guy. My five year old then proceeds to tell the guy, "My dad hit your truck." He panics until he sees that there was no damage. I informed him that I only tracked him down in case someone else saw it and thought I was driving away to avoid getting in trouble. My van? It currently has tire tread on the from bumper.

If you are not in a hurry, stick around for a little bit. If you are take pictures and if the damage is substantial, contact the police.

The FIRST thing I would do is check BOTH vehicles for visible damages. Note: Anyone saying they would leave contact information is being imprecise. They CAN'T leave contact information before exiting their vehicle.

I would take photos and leave contact information. You may need the photos so someone doesn't claim you did more damage then you actually caused.

Leave a note. I was glad someone left me one once. I ended up with over $800 damage to my truck. I was parked at airport parking lot. The guy left me his contact info. Insurance covered repairs.

It my have to depend on the amount of damage done. If it was very bad, I may wait a while for the owner. If not, then the contact information would be left behind.

I have had a person drag the front of their vehicle down the passenger side of my truck till it went into the rear wheel well damaging the tire. Security cameras caught it!! They then pulled forward into the wheel well!! straightened their front wheels, backed out of the wheel well into the Empty parking space next to my truck!! My truck was parked at least six parking spaces on all sides far out in the lot of this grocery store so that only the movements of the vehicle could be seen at the upper edge of the security camera. No Note! Couple of thousand of dollars damage to lower doors and wheel wells. $300 dollar tire. They had no need to park there plus they had plenty of others options for getting out of the space. After seeing the video it was agreed that this person was probably not able to make good decisions about much of anything concerning driving for whatever reason.
