I use cruise control at all speeds above 50 km/hr. The one in my car is extremely stable.

The problem with cruise control is that it is set point (on/off) control; when the vehicle slows down going uphill the controller hits the throttle too hard and it costs you gas mileage. Then when the vehicle speeds up going downhill it comes off the gas completely rather than building momentum to expend on the next hill.
If the cruise control were proportional control so that the corrections were proportional to the distance from the set point the throttle control would be much smoother and would get better mileage.
I get much smoother throttle control and better mileage without the cruise control.
