Many on this website bemoan the US sell out to other nations. Imported oil is a very significant fraction of such sell out. But achieving energy independence is too painful. Those who complain but wish to continue to import large quantities are of crude oil and oil products are the problem, because they want to accomplish something that cannot be accomplished!

The question is not how long before we run out but how long before it is outlawed? Many believe we have to save us from us to make a world where it doesn't matter if us are aound or not. If we all eat vegetables out of our back yard garden, rely on wind, solar power or natural gas (wonder where that comes from certinaly not pools of that polluting oil) to power our homes and our vehicles we will no longer need fossil fuel (coal or oil fired)power plants or carbon consuming vehicles. At that point who will care. Maybe we can ask the attorneys that will represent the animals if we are going in the right direction and how they (the animals) will vote to help us just survive.

2030. Crude oil is running out and prices will continue to rise as a result. The move away from oil will be driven by supply and demand - most people will not be able to afford gas and diesel.

By 2030 -2040, alternatives could become possible if seriously developed and promoted today, but many underestimate the enormity of this issue, and they may not be as low cost or as convenient as oil. Take (fossil!) natural gas as a motor fuel (Pickens plan!, but remember, in terms of energy content the US is consuming currently about twice as much oil as natural gas!), such vehicles have been available but did not sell in large quantity in the US, because the added inconvenience was perceived not to be warranted by the fuel-cost savings.
Fact is, over the last 35 years, US petroleum production declined by 1/3. A decision whether or not to drill now could affect whether or not the US production will drop another 1/3 over the next 35 years, or can maintain current levels for a while. That leaves still the requirement for importing almost 60% of petroleum if we wish to maintain current petroleum consumption, some were even talking of having it still increase!
Alberta oil sands, most optimistic projection are that they would produce 4-5 million barrels per day (in about 25 years), i.e., 1/2 of Saudi Arabia (today, the Athabaska production is closer to 1 million barrels per day!). Given the fact that Canada has an internal consumption (a little over 2 million barrels per day), that PROJECTED future amount of potential exports is similar to the US production lost over the last 35 years (3 million barrels per day). Yet, aside from "deep-sea" oil, Athabaska is right now the largest non-conventional oil production already.
Ethanol -- in Brazil it constitutes 1/2 of motor fuel, in the US <5%. (US and Brazilian ethanol production is about the same!!)
You need to add up real numbers, not wished-for ones!
