I think the station owner does this on purpose to get people in the store to maybe buy food or something.

Sometimes I also get the receipt from the guy before me. I keep track of mileage and verify charges to the credit card statement therewith. Also its a handy log for checking my past destinations, activities, and fuel prices. Could be an important alibi, too.
