Earning these points could improve, by a small programming adjustment. This earning could start with the clicking on the first item as it is with making a first post, and not as it is at present with the second click. Has anybody suggested this?

I can't say this is a bad idea, but I don't regard it as much of a priority, honestly.

It might have been programmed this way on purpose, I don't have any way to know, but what I observed.

"I'm not going to get a 24 K baud modem to test it."

Certainly a surefire way to grow old prematurely :-/

CK - I didn't say you thought it should be adopted. I was simply commenting on when it was reasonable for the points to appear.

GGG - Interesting. I'm not going to get a 24 K baud modem to test it. Personally I had thought it was done on purpose as a cheap, albeit ineffective way to make you think you had to click and read the actual news article to get the points.

Scrap: If anything I have said suggests that this is worth adopting, I apologize. When one catches on that the points will be awarded regardless of when or where they appear, I think that should be good enough.

To clarify a bit, if that's even needed:

The header at the very top of most pages which contains the member points, consecutive days and related stuff is dynamic and built on-the-fly. At about the same time the points for reading the news article are added to the day's numbers, but the points that will show at the top of the newly opened page have already been calculated and retrieved. Then the remainder of the page is served up. The points are only behind by milliseconds.

If you have another browser window or tab open and on the point statistics page, click to open a news article and immediately change to and refresh the other window or tab, the point statistics will reflect the 25 added for reading that news article that has just been opened. The points at the top of the just opened news article cannot display the points for reading that news article itself because the points are added sometime between when the header at the top of that page was served and the rest of the page was served.

Want to see that in slo-mo?

Use a dial-up internet connection and force the connection down to about 24k baud so it gives you time to click on the news article, switch to the other window or tab showing the point statistics and refresh that. You will see that the points increase by 25 at about the same time as the body of the news article is painted on the screen but before the article comments are.

IMO it's not an error since one gets the points, and it would be splitting hairs to call it a bug and argue that it could be fixed by adding the points before retrieving the page header that contains the point statistics.

I agree with Scrapheap's last post though I'd probably word it "CK - I think it is unreasonable to expect the homepage to update when you click on a news link because it opens to a new page which should be up to date."

CK - I think it is unreasonable to expect the homepage to update when you click on a news link. However, the new page it opens should be up to date.

This suggestion has been added to the Suggestion Tracking List as a new subject.

To paraphrase the idea, "Points earned for reading the first news item should register on the home page without requiring refreshing the page after clicking the news item link."

Kinglemuel, no need to limit yourself to just 6 or 7 news articles. You can see all the news articles by following the All Recent News link located just below the 5 news articles, and there you will see the newest and most recently posted articles conveniently near the top of the page.

I would like to see 6 or 7 news articles, that way if there is one from yesterday, which may be good to keep for someone who may have missed it, I can have another new article to choose/read. Thanks.

This suggestion makes more sense now but I just don't see the need nor the issue.

When you click on a news article you have earned the 25 points. You can see this if you go to any other page on GasBuddy, which forces a page refresh. Your suggestion is that the page should be updated when you click on the news article. I see this as an improvement but a rather minor issue as you are awarded the points, even though the page you open doesn't reflect that.

CampKohler "I would like the author to restate his suggestion in a reply to this topic. I don't understand either the "as it is with making a first post" reference, nor the "second click" business."

When you make a first post in any topic of any category of the GB forum you get the 20 points immediately and see them on the top of the page beside the "Today's Points" line.

The second click "business" refers to the need to click again in the News blog to see the the first 20 points credited in that spot showing Today's Points.

I hope I was clearer this time. My apology for the confusion.

The OP is observing that the points for an article don't register immediately.

When I first click on an article, if I have not earned any points previously and most days I haven't, the separate article screen that opens still registers my day's point total as a zero. I avoid it by refreshing an extra time just to be sure all the article points are in the bag. But if I were to go to a message forum without refreshing or clicking on another article, my 25 points would show up on the next screen I open. In other words, there's a one screen lag between the time you earn the points and the points register on the screen. It's been that way for me since I joined.

The points probably register in our points history immediately. I say probably only because I've never checked it. I try to make sure I max out my points each day, but when I don't I'm never heartbroken . . . .

I am not sure what the OP is asking but to earn points for reading news you don't have to post...in fact, you shouldn't post responses to news items unless you have something REAL to contribute to the thread.

Points for posting in forums should be done in JFF unless you have something to contribute other than a nothing response like "OK" or "Interesting with a CHECK MARK --- ROGER - you reading this??"

Here is one location for mindless posting to get post points:
OK thread in JFF. One of many places for posting for forum points when you have nothing real to contribute in other threads.

Or, maybe what he is talking about is when clicking the news it opens a new window for him and that will still show the "zero" points added until he refreshes his screen. He got the points, but just didn't see them yet.

Like Scrapheap said. You get points just for clicking on the news item.

You get points when you click on the news item. If you hit F5 4 times after that, you will get all the points you can for reading news items. You don't need to post in the discussion of the news item and if you are under the mistake impression that you do, many of us would be happy if you stopped and took you point earning efforts to the Just For Fun forum.
