Strange thing happened as Gas Buddy took away my progress to my Commuter award on 1/21. Seems this award is dependent on GPS data. Fix the GPS locations on the source system. I can be standing in a gas station an be over a 1 mile away. Guess GPS is only as accurate as the Cell tower you are connected to.

I am guessing that if you have a cheap phone like Straight Talk, and your GPS does not always work while you are right at the station that means it does not count towards your rewards *sigh*

Some cellphones do use GPS (vs. only cell network) data to locate the phone. Read this.

Thank You
I give up. Thanks for the help, y'all

I mostly do my reporting on mobile. Now, I see that I can not get answers on mobile like I can on the computer. I have sent questions to Admin, but can not get answers that I can understand. And to answer your question Admins - YES, I ALWAYS HAVE MY GPS ON :)

Thank You
RichWLIN ( I did not understand) Thanks for the link.

Sorry but there was absolutely nothing intended nor said with sarcasm (at least this time). I thought all i did was respond and answer the question about pisting in two states (which shouldn't resultin 80 percent).

I could be mistaken, but it appears that member satinbabydoll is trying to say that the Pioneer award is showing an achievment of level one (report a gas price in two different states) with an advancement of 80% to level 3 (report a gas price in 5 different states).

This would indicate that there has been price reporting in 4 different states or 4/5 reaching the current 80% since becoming a member in October of 2012.

In any case, it is obvious that this member is confused about how the awards are accumulated. Many people don't understand how the awards are credited, mainly because this information is purposely unavailable on the app; this is part of the game by design. This member clearly has not spent much time here in the forum (only 16 posts at present) and likely has not read this topic where the various award levels have been revealed.

Gas_Buddy:

True, the question was not well put and somewhat difficult to understand, but is it really necessary to ask sarcastic questions in response rather than taking a few moments to consider how best to provide a polite and informative answer?

satinbabydoll:

"Even though I am posting gas prices from 2 different states, my *Pioneer* has been on (80) since like FOREVER. Virginia and North Carolina..."

The "Pioneer" award is earned by reporting a gas price for different states/provinces/territories. You earn/reach Level 1 by reporting a gas price in 2 different states, you earn/reach Level 2 by reporting a gas price in 5 different states, and so on.

Not sure how your " *Pioneer* has been on (80) since like FOREVER. Virginia and North Carolina..." but if you're only posting gas prices for Virginia and North Carolina, you should expect to be at Level 1 "FOREVER", not "...on (80)".

Are you suggesting that because you're posting gas prices "from 2 different states" that your Pioneer Level should be changing?

"The problem is that cell phones are not GPSr's"

This might be true of some cell phones; however, my Motorola Droids have a GPS receiver built in, as I'm sure many other smartphone models now do. I have used it as a standalone device (Verizon and Google services disabled) to identify positions, and find it to be fairly accurate as compared with other handheld GPS devices.

Incidentally, I also use an app, GPS Essentials, that will display the satellite constellation graphically, and that includes most other features found on GPS devices. By activating Google Map services, this app will track position on highways and secondary roads within a few meters as long as there is line-of-sight visibility with enough satellites to fix a position.

The bottom line with regard to this discussion, I believe, is that it was discovered very early on, and confirmed by a moderator, that GPS needs to be enabled on the device that is running the app or awards will not be counted.

The problem is that cell phones are not GPSr's, that is they don't receive satellite data. Cellphones use cell tower triangulation to approximate GPS location.

The GPS position determined by your phone is dependent on the satellite system only. The cell system is merely a comm channel to GBO hq and does not determine position.

Oh no! An award that no one knows you have earned doesn't work! Bummer!

Turn on your GPS. You have to be within 10 miles of the station when you report the price.

Alternatively, get rid of the awards or realize that they are meaningless.
