So i've seen. Tommyguns45 must be "discombobulated".

>Can we get back on to the primary topic...<

OK. One problem with using google search this way is that it's not up to date. The results are only as complete as the last time it crawled GB. For example, searching for the word "discombobulated" only returns 1 result, in replies to a news article posted Feb. 2011.

This forum discussion where the word is used twice (not including this reply which has not yet been posted) does not appear in the search results.

Can we get back on to the primary topic, a search feature that will enable searching or specific words?

Give points (more points?) with a word game? Grammar, maybe. (Yes, sarcasm)

Tommy, look up the meanings for "then" and "than." No, you won't get points.

The only search function is this one. It isn't the best but it's all there is.

GGG <<<<
First, what connection does that have to the topic of this thread? If it is a suggestion for a new site feature it should be posted as a new topic.>>>

it follows other types of posts that this member has posted in the two forums that have some (but very little) moderation. Sounds more like game for the JJF crowd.

@Tommy <<<<Start a word game so members will have to look up the meaning if they dont know it and get 10 points for giving the right answer.>>>

You are free to create such a game in the JFF. As for points --
More points? Never satisfied? They have already just recently increased the point earning capabilities for a member, and you don't seem to be taking advantage of them by posting any prices.

Tommy <<<We need to get away from Smart Phone gadgets to learn to old fashion way again. It never hurts ones vocabulary to learn new words. No wonder today's kids are so discombobulated for no more then they learn in school. >>>

Learn to what in old fashion(ed) way?

"Start a word game..."

First, what connection does that have to the topic of this thread? If it is a suggestion for a new site feature it should be posted as a new topic.

Second, IMO this website is not here to provide exercises or games to widen it's members vocabulary, except possibly for a small list of specialized words used in the energy and petroleum industries.

No one claimed there was a good search function. Pointing your comments at mine makes no sense so maybe you should re-read them.

My point was that "A search function gets suggested about once a month. I am not holding my breath."

There is obviously not a search feature worthy of find unique words or phrases here.

I gave you 2 of 3 "unique" words to search for that I put in a random post, your name may appear many times, but the nonsense word does not. A good search would find those 2 words, and you would know what the 3rd one is.

My point is that you should be able to search using words or phrases.

I caught that "name" and figured it out real quick-like.

"Your comments do not name any sense."

And my reply here did not make any sense. Tony4150 what is the point of your comments, they do not make any sense to me. Or why an otherwise dormant topic was bumped to make them.

'Maxstar - somewhere, I posted the words, one completely nonsensical, one your name, they are "Maxstar aburfjjfutodmndn". Search and find the third word. I doubt that nonsense word appears more than once in all forums."

Your comments do not name any sense.

Every other forum I eve visited had some sort of search mechanism. One had a search tool that was unavailable and the forum suggested using Google to search within the particular forum.

This would be very nice. I'm actually thinking about starting a thread, but wanted to see it it was out there already first. Hard to search for it manually. This is the day of computers, manual searching is not needed anymore. :o)

Better question might be, why hasn't it been acted upon before?

Gas_Buddy wrote > But do you really think there are enough unique words or phrases that a "search feature" for the forums would be effective?

There is commercially available forum software that will allow you to search titles, within the body of posts, by forum, by author, by date and combinations of the aforementioned. Yes, there are enough unique words.

The idea is suggested every few months, yet no such function has been added. The links below have some of the responses from the previous suggestions over the past year alone.

Great idea. Wonder why it hasn't been suggested before.

But do you really think there are enough unique words or phrases that a "search feature" for the forums would be effective? After all, many of the members can't come up with an accurate and descriptive title for their topics that can easily be understood when review the topics within a category.

Definitely one of the better suggestions.
