Why can I only search these forums by author? This search function is completely useless when I'm trying to find out how to edit my Favorite List?! Who cares who the author is, I need to search by TOPIC!

This suggestion (as amended) has been added to the Suggestion Tracking List as a new topic on an existing subject.

Yes, KEYWORD was really what I meant.

As a brand new user looking for answers on how to do something, the current search doesn't give you much to narrow down a result set to pick through before repeating the question again.

It would be interesting to know what the issues are (besides inertia) that have prevented adopting standard software for the forum.

Yep, I would give up the increased "prizes" to put towards a real B-Board forum software ;-)

Problem is, most of those would probably mean eliminating the points for posting in the forums or reading news

These forums should use third party software that already has robust search capabilities for combinations of titles, bodies and author.

I fully agree with CampKohler on this. While it would be good to have (even if you didn't have a "topic search" feature) an alphabetical topic listing (as CampKohler has created) to see if a topic has already been started, there are too many topics that are generic or ambiguous. Topic names run the gamut from "Gas" to "Help" through a plethora of "Gas Prices" "High Prices" "Boycott" "Cash or Credit" "Cash and Credit" and so on.

The problem (or a least "a problem") is that there aren't really enough distinct words to search for, whether it's it by topic name or from the original post, let alone a search that would go through replies to the original post. If you could get members to post distinct and specific topic names for their posts it would make a significant difference, but even then there would be few distinct "key words" to search for. In the interim, CampKohler's Suggestion Tracking List serves as a very good starting point.

As for "Who cares who the author is...", at least for the substantive threads, you have a sense of intelligent responses even though they may be on a variety of topics.

BTW, it takes a few minutes of work to set it up, but you can search by topic. Highlight all the text of each page of a category's topic index, copy the page and paste it into a Notepad or Word Pad text file, such that it results in a text file containing the entire index for the category (or at least whatever portion of the category that accessible to users.) Then do a find for the word or phrase that you are looking for.

You might THINK you want to search by topic, but I hope to convince you that you don't. In a perfect world, every topic's title would be written in the same language you would write it yourself. Unfortunately, the title may not contain ANY of the words or phrase that one would logically search for. For example, we have seen topics with the title, "My suggestion" or something similar, and you would never find it. Instead may I suggest that what you would find useful is a keyword search, wherein you supply words likely to appear in the text of the topic, just as you would do for a Web page.

As a demonstration of what a topic might logically contain vs. what it actually does, click on any link in the subjects of the Suggestion Tracking List, and read what the topic's author thought was the appropriate title. After a little of that, I ask you if you would rather ask for a keyword search for the forum instead.
