Hey GasBuddies,

I have some exciting news to share! Starting January 1st 2014 we will be switching from weekly prizes to daily draws of $100 in gas gift cards.

With the way the calendar works this year we have our final weekly draw on December 30th for the week of December 23rd - December 29th. If you enter between December 30th and January 1st you will be entered into the draw for January 1st. Starting January 2nd all draws will be daily.

Tickets will still cost 1,000 points per ticket and the same rules apply. You must confirm your address with us and we still ask for a picture of yourself holding the cards for our 'Recent Winners' page.

We would love to hear what you think about our exciting new transition. Any and all feedback is welcome.

Regards,

Ryan (RD)

This is good to give beneficiaries to many people, but I don't see winners are from Canada. Is this for only American? Then, I don't need to participate this winning gas contest.

I think a daily prize is great. It gives everyone a better shot than once a week at winning!

That's great for many on Gas Buddy, but what about the many of us who either own or work for their own Station? Why does it always have to be gas you give away? I don't want to use my points for gas???

TB Moderator,

My comments were not against daily versus weekly. Daily is just fine with me, now that you explained that if a GB does not have the full 1000 points he still gets to play 1 entry per day. My comments are satisfied.

But one thing I must say: It sure must be nice to win the drawing on the first day one joins!!!!

Hmmm, do you have contacts with the airlines so that they would contribute airmiles for GBO to give away?

ToolKing

There has been many arguments back and forth on if the contest should be weekly or daily. Lets all just remember that if any of us saw $100 laying on the ground we would all probably bend over and pick it up. This is the direction we are going with the contest now but you are still free to discuss it if you wish. I'm not going to get into exact numbers but I can tell you that we are getting less entries in the daily draws than we were in the weekly draw meaning that if you choose to put all of your points into one draw you would significantly increase your odds in that draw rather than if you did it in the weekly draw.

How you spend your points is your choice that I think is the great thing about this new system. What if you think Thursdays are your lucky day maybe you want to only buy tickets on Thursdays well you can do that now.

Also you should know that members who don't have enough points to enter the draw get 1 free ticket per draw. So that is how a case where a member who has 100 points can still win a draw. Which happened yesterday (1/29/2014) by the way.

scoutmaster,

I understand the calculations you stated. The points you mentioned (2,645,580) that shows by my post actually shows the points I have earned since I have been a GB member. The points I have left to play the gas lottery is extremely less! The difference is the amount of points I have played in the past years.

In my first post on this thread I stated (as it stands now) that if a person played ALL his points on today's lottery, tomorrow he would be 25 points short of being able to play because he only made 925 points for that day. A new, first day member can not play even one chance his first day because he only earns 975 points that day.

ToolKing,

If you play one (1) ticket a day seven (7) days a week, you will spend 7,000 points in one (1) week. If you max out your points you will earn 6,925 points/week (975 for six (6) days, 1,075 for one (1) day) which means you will cut into your point total by 75 points/week. Based on your current point total (2,645,580), it would take you 35,274 weeks or 678 years to exhaust your points.

Thanks for opening my eyes by pointing out and helping me realize I wasn't commenting to a Moderator. Guess I need to read more closely. Hopefully all our comments will be read by a GB Moderator and considered.

I am not stressing out over the drawing or how it is run. I only made a suggestion and you can take it or leave it, I don't really care. I just play the game in hopes that some day I might win to ease our budget.

Hi ToolKing,

Gas_Buddy that is from Maryland is just a member expressing his opinion on the way the gas prize game works and not an official of GBO (Gas Buddy Organization).

The Powers that Be at GBO have a hard time trying to please everyone. People constantly complain that they want more frequent drawings while others want bigger prizes less often. They up the total purse per week, and lowered the individual prize and increased the frequency of the draw. It seems like a reasonable compromise to me (even though I would have preferred the weekly format).

As far as folks dumping a build up of points - there are many that build up points and NEVER enter and will continue to never enter. There are others that will be dumping points for a while, and others will hold their bank for a while until other posters settle into a rhythm on how they will buy their tickets - daily as they earn them, or weekly on Monday, or Tuesday...or whatever.

I think the ability to decide how you play the game is part of the game.

Just my take on it, though I understand that many may agree with you or any number of variants of changes in the number of tickets and rules.

Gas Buddy:

What I am saying is only allow one ticket per person for each daily drawing, provided they have the necessary points to play. Like the "Lottery", if they forget to play, they lost a chance to win. As it stands now, if a person plays everyday, eventually they will be short on points to play without missing a day, especially a person just joining. The only way to correct that situation is to make it possible to earn 1000 points/day.

The way it is, if a person dumps all their points on one day they will not be able to play the next day because they can't earn enough points in one day to play that day. Using all your points in one day doesn't necessarily mean you will win due to the number of entries by all gas buddy members! I have built up a lot of points, yet I play the same number every day because it allows me more chances to win than if I dumped them all on one drawing and lost.

Maybe I should have suggested that a person should only be allowed to buy 1-5 chances daily (making it possible to use their points down) therefore making everyone's odds a lot better than they are now. Even though a person may better their odds to win now by dumping all their points on one drawing, that doesn't mean they will win. I have heard of people thinking they could beat the "Lottery system" by spending a fortune only to lose all their savings.

What I have suggested is only food for thought only to make everyone feel that they have better or equal chance. You agreed that allowing only 1 entry/day gives everyone an equal chance to win but it is your lottery and you can do as you please.

Thanks for your response.

ToolKing:

"To make this daily drawing fair for everyone, each person should only be allowed one entry per day."

Are you suggesting that everyone gets a ticket or that no person is allowed to "dump all their points" into one drawing if they want to?

If members weren't allowed to enter more than once a day, meaning that if you don't enter the drawing on a given day, you've essentially lost your points (because there's nothing else to do with them). It seems that "problem" (for lack of a better word) would build up because you don't necessarily earn enough points a day to enter the drawing every day, therefore you build in a chance that members will forget to enter the drawing every day (in order to use their points).

While limiting drawing entry to one ticket a day might give all entrants an equal chance to win, why shouldn't members have a choice as to whether or not they want to enter daily or "save up their entry points" to buy "extra tickets" (just as they might do for a lottery drawing)? Just asking, that's all.

@Metrolizer -

You get 750 points for posting prices --- how do "no price posting gamers" get an advantage? Without prices they only get 225 (325 when there is a new poll) per day.

Please reduce the point-cost per entry. As it is, the no-price posting gamers have gained a huge advantage. Especially over those of us who often forget to make entering the drawing the first thing we do online, even before reporting prices.

If you only got enough points in a week for say 3 tickets for the weekly draw, you should still have enough now to enter 3 times a week instead of once.

i agree with another poster, i too don't earn enough points for a daily entry so i will only be in it once a week so now if i should win it's $100 instead of $250.

I'd like to echo LarryMarg's suggestion for reducing the number of points it costs per ticket. Or perhaps increasing the max daily points awarded so that it is at least possible to enter the daily draw on a daily basis. Thanks.

"Any thought to adding an auto-enrollment feature for the prizes? Something where we could say "enroll me on XX day(s) for XX number of tickets" would be nice now that there are daily giveaways."

While that might make it easier for the member to enter the drawing daily, it would eliminate the member "visiting" the website and possibly opening advertisements, etc. And that would defeat any reason advertisers would have for supporting the website. After all, the website is a business and the primary purpose of a business is to make money; if all the website was doing was giving away "money" (gas cards) to people not "visiting the website", why give away the "money" in the first place.

Ya won't get burned in Pittsburgh LarryMarg. There are very few dual-priced stations here. The only thing you will get burned by is prices posted for for grades a station doesn't sell. That and the cash/credit issue are extremely more important than daily prizes.

To start out on topic - I like more chances to win, but it's a bit frustrating that it takes 1000 points to enter but you can only get 975 points per day. I'd like to see the entry "cost" drop to 975.

> "Finally, I see more problems with the cash/credit prices posted issue than I do for postings of non-existent fuel grades."

There might be more bozos posting credit prices despite the site's rules saying to post the cash price (see the FAQ), but for someone who drives a diesel, people posting diesel prices at stations that don't carry diesel is a much bigger problem.

I've been burned enough that I'll always check the MSL to verify that a station carries diesel before I go to the station.

Happy New Year!
My $0.02...
I tend to agree that daily prizes will increase the daily visits and posting. Don't know about the false price posting. I'm inclined to get a ticket for a lottery when the jackpot gets bigger but as recently demonstrated by the changes in the prize structure of the "MEGA Millions" multi-state lottery, the improvement of the odds to win A prize seems to be a greater motivator to enter than the worse odds of winning THE jackpot are a deterrent.
As there are now well over a 100,000 GBs, the odds on the weekly draw were getting worse.
The winners page seemed pretty self explanatory to me once I figured out that the drawing was changed to daily.
Finally, I see more problems with the cash/credit prices posted issue than I do for postings of non-existent fuel grades. I noticed a significant jump in both events when the "smart phone" app launched.
May the solutions to these problems be swift, efficient (and easy). Best wishes in this endeavor, however, I'm not going to hold my breath.

TB,

I know this isn't the only thing that has been done in the past two years. There have been many changes/improvements. But to me and others, the biggest and most important are the non being able to post grades a station doesn't sell and the cash/credit issue. And since both of these impact the credibility of this site, I would think TPTB would be more concerned with these than contests.

TB - the new page is an improvement. When I looked at the link previously, it seemed like there was the most current one missing and now message. Maybe I caught a small window or mis-read the date.
I still think it would have been better to up the number of winners on the weekly with $250 and $100 prizes but it is what it is. We shall see how it plays out soon.

Scout please don't act like the only thing we have done in the last 2 years is work on the daily prize draw and please stop asking about how long something took to work on. I don't ask you how long it took to report prices or how long you worked as something at your job today.

TxJeans I think the problem with the previous winners page is the prize give away didn't show up on that page until the winner was announced. This could take up to 14 days and sometimes longer if we couldn't get a hold of the winner at all and had to go onto the next person that was drawn. This would lead to questions of "what happened to the contest". Now when you look at the Recent Winners page. You can see that we have drawn for the contest and are contacting the winner for confirmation. If we have one that takes longer the waiting for winner confirmation message stays there until we have a confirmed winner for the contest. The previous version of the page just skipped that contest and showed the next winner which led to gaps in the dates and I believe added to the confusion.

Well TB, it's beginning to seem like changes that will help with the site credibility take a back seat to easy change like this one. This will only encourage more bogus posts as members chase the daily prizes.

I understand the cash/credit and not allowing the posting of grades a station doesn't carry are a lot harder than this. But, the grades piece is already sort of in place and just needs to be modified. I know that requires testing but it's been over 2 years!

From my family to yours, a blessed Christmas to all~

"Your right it doesn't say "the contest has ended" but the dates and the fact that it is on the winners page should let you know that we have done the drawing for this contest and are contacting the winner. "

You are assuming a lot -- based on past history, I suspect we will be getting a lot of where are the winners. Weren't the dates there for those that were posted in the past? Hasn't there always been the date range on the posting of the winner? So, what happens when you have one that takes the longer path to notification?

Merry Christmas and may the new year bring better updates ;-)

Scout I can't tell you how long its been worked on probably never going to happen. It was an easier change to make than the cash credit stuff believe me. Your right it doesn't say "the contest has ended" but the dates and the fact that it is on the winners page should let you know that we have done the drawing for this contest and are contacting the winner.
