I think you need to put a limit on what I consider a violation of the spirit of this website - those who post the same or similar post over and over again. There is no reason anyone would do so, except to try to get more points. I have been faithfully recording gas prices for almost 3 years, but I have not been abusing the spirit of the site, like I think some are doing. i suggest omitting any points for posts to the "just for fun" forum;I predict that over time, the posts there would vanish. Another idea is to prohibit the exact same post more than one time in a forum; today I saw someone post the number 1 over and over and over. i would like to win a gas card, but so far I have not stooped to the level of repetitive posts. Thanks for your consideration!

There will always be abuse of the posting for points unless the posting points are eliminated. If you want lively forums and offer points the "just for fun" category is better than cluttering the real forums.

This is apparently the plan, generate as many page views as possible for the ad placements on each page. Quality of content is irrelevant when the strategy is about advertising revenue first.

Profit is not a dirty word. After all, this site is purposely designed to promote activity and generate advertising revenue while people post gas prices, read news articles, comment in the forums, etc.

You can't comment on closed topics, pghbill.

it's about strategy. When I started to post I searched the forum for interesting topics and made well thought out comments. I got my head chopped off for commenting on "closed topics", so why are they open? I'll just post for points it's easier.

They most have wanted that Champion Author title pretty bad!

Posting for points is rampant in ALL areas of the site, there seems to be no over site nor corrective action taken to halt the problem. This is evident by the number of "old", "what has this to do with gas prices?", "k", and other mindless posts in newsville area.

You should've seen the mess before the religion and politics forums were created. Holy cow.

I still don't understand this "spirit of the site" business. The forums are here for posting and part of the site for 100 points a day. It's not as if anyone is getting rich with posting. You can't even earn one ticket a week from the forums.

Let it go.

How about removing points for TOS violations?
How about removing points for those that bump old topics for point? <VBG>

Why do you believe this would be better than the status quo? Even assuming they correctly keep it to the JFF area, five junk postings in five junk topics seems no better (and possibly worse) than five junk postings in one junk topic.

Good veteran responses to my initial post. Maybe a better idea would be to only allow points for a single post per day, or like I originally said, disallow "the exact same post more than one time in a forum" per day. At least then those folks who do so would have to open and post in 5 different topics.

"I predict that over time, the posts there would vanish. Another idea is to prohibit the exact same post more than one time in a forum; today I saw someone post the number 1 over and over and over."

First, I agree with the others responders that allowing posts, even for points, in the "Just For Fun" discussion category is better than having the "spirit violators" post comments any and everywhere else. As is, many of the substantive topics are filled with one or two word responses such as "Yes", "ok", and "I agree", or the all-essential "Interesting" and "Hmmm".

If those members were posting for points only (and I'm not disagreeing that they are), they'll simply find other threads in which to earn points.

That said, yes, there are many members (not just a "someone") who post the number "over and over and over". I can think of one member, off-hand, that has posted over 4 million message posts. Obviously the maximum posts that earn points each day is five, so there's more to posting "the number 1" "over and over and over" than just points.

If the worst that happens is a member gets 100 points a day - in the Just For Fun discussion category - in order to get one "gas card ticket" per week, I'd rather have that than they post in the more substantive topics, whether they got points or not.

Yes, it would be good if they faithfully recorded gas prices as you have been, and have most of the responders below, but I have little confidence that they'll give up their "fun" posts even if it didn't earn points.

I't prefer that you get points only for posting in JFF. That would reduce the fluff posts in Newsville and all the other forums.

Gotta agree with kwzh. If the JFF forum would go away, those who post there would start in the other categories with one word posts. Not a good idea.

Kinglemuel, I believe you're correct in saying that disallowing points for JFF postings would cause less posting in that forum. But they wouldn't "vanish" so much as "migrate" -- we'd start seeing all of those fluff postings *outside* of the JFF category. This would not be an improvement!

History lesson: JFF was *created* because there were so many fluff posts in other categories. The point was to get them out of there. There's been partial success in that goal, though the news forums are still rather badly polluted. In any case, removing points for JFF would be a huge step backwards.

What is this "spirit of the site" you are talking about? The opportunity to earn the points was available to all. Even the points earned in the JFF forum are earned within rules of the website. What you consider a violation of the spirit this website is wrong and in my view comes across as so much complaining.

Also, you'll be able to get more points for tickets if you max your points daily. No one is abusing the site just posting for points. Read the description of the forum.

The whole point of the JFF category is to post nonsense for points, so I agree with CelticHeart that a change isn't going to happen. If you're seeing a few posts to get the 125 point max, there isn't a problem. If you're seeing hundreds (which I have), that is a useless detriment to the website and should be reported. The moderators will take care of that.

I'm glad the fluff is done in jff. That forum is for posting for points. After your first five, it doesn't matter. I don't see your prediction coming through at all. I won't disappear.
