The "3,500,000 GB points graphic" thread got me thinking. Would it be possible to increase the size of the graphic slightly to put a small legend under it (or somewhere on it if that doesn't work) saying what level the car represents? I don't know about anybody else, but I have a hard time remembering what color goes with what level without looking it up. If there could be small print on it somewhere saying ">10000" or whatever that might be a little more useful.

Just a thought.

Pretty simple, any car that is not red is suspect, Lolz.

Or just place a numeric on the door that shows the level. 1,2,3,...8 etc.
Still will need to increase the size of the car though.

That's a fairly accurate assessment. Many websites that depend on member participation use various graphics and avatars that increase as the member's participation increases, or financial participation on some sites. Some sites allow members to have animated avatars and other goodies when they reach a certain level.

Maybe GB can create animated car icons for certain levels... J/K!

I wouldn't be at all surprised if they were put there to drive site engagement. It's supposed to push members to get more points so they get a "better" graphic and they show that off in their posts and when they update prices etc. I'll bet it works for a good number of people. It's like an achievement in an XBox game.

I don't think it's particularly necessary in most cases, but I do find it useful when looking at the reported prices list. If the reporter has only been around a short time, I might be more inclined to not believe the price posted especially if it seems off. Someone who has been around a long time I might believe more even if the price seems a little wonky.

This suggestion has been added to the Suggestion Tracking List as a new subject.

GB has it right! If an icon doesn't intuitively suggest to the reader what it means, then the icon is just a useless pile of steaming camel graphic. It's like medical packaging, where they feel compelled to use icons for the various product info fields, but since they can't come up with an intuitive icon that would mean lot number, they use (get this!) a box with the word LOT in it. If that's good enough for the medical industry, why isn't it good enough for us? Let's substitute for all the vehicles a box with "HAS (number) POINTS" in it. Of course I am being silly, but so is the whole icon idea.

Get rid of the cars completely! The point total is there. Maybe change the Veteran Author, Champion Author, etc. to link to the point total instead of the number of posts. But I agree with kwzh, this idea doesn't have legs.

An alternate idea would be to put the information into a tooltip so it would show up when you hover the mouse.

But I don't think the idea has enough value to be worth pursuing, in any case.

If you have to put a "legend" under the graphic to explain what the graphic means, you don't need the graphic. Especially as you already have the points indicated. All a legend would is give the low and high points ends of the "graphic.

Why not simplify it by removing the graphic entirely and simply indicate the points? Or, have one graphic whose use is to identify 90 days of consecutive contributions to Gas Buddy? Simply eliminate multiple level icons.
