An alternate method of making the "Show topics that I participated in" Tab more useful would be to continue to show all of them, but sorted according to the timestamp of that user's participation in the thread, rather than by the timestamp of the thread itself. Then anything non-recent (by whatever threshold we choose to apply) will be automatically buried.

This was suggested by kwzh in Flushing: Show topics that I participated in,
So s/he gets the credit not me.

"All we need to do is get some of the "HealthCare.Gov" web page designers, they could make it work. "

They're probably looking for jobs about now.

Enough with the meta-discussion. Let's discuss the proposal itself.

Although I'd like to see this implemented, I can see why it might be "hard". The search-by-author results -- whether keyed by your own member ID, or someone else's -- is displayed as if it were a forum category. Thus, each record is displayed with the timestamp of the message thread itself, because that's what's appropriate for the listings of a true category.

Also, the current implementation is evidently a boolean indexed by message and user. To make this work, we'd need it to change the type of the field to be a timestamp instead of a boolean. Can this be done without reformatting all of the existing topics?

It would be better if this topic never started.

So what would be a better title?

Order "Show topics that I participated in" by date member posted in?

Well, we get accused of going "off topic" so the topic title is more important than you think!

It appears to me that people are wrapped around the axel over the Topic title and opening suggestion then making an improvement, talk about sweating the small stuff.

Well, RC can't change the topic line. He can only request the moderators change it for him. I think it should be closed.

It's up to Retired-Coastie to decide if it's confusing enough to be worth changing the topic line. If so, the procedure for doing that is to petition the mods. (Using "Report Abuse" on your own top message is probably the most convenient for all parties.)

I understand and agree with kwzh's explanation, however, the current topic title (Part Two) and the opening of this thread ("An alternate method of making...more useful..." makes this thread seem a secondary suggestion of the original post (Part One). Agreed, this topic should have a new title or (as I suggested earlier) integrate it into Part One as on-going discussion/pros and cons/etc.

Well, RC, it appears in your case it doesn't make any difference.

scoutmaster; is it better to be a Wise Guy or a Wise Man? And I was once told "Don't sweat the petty stuff, and don't pet the sweaty stuff."

CampKohler; How long have you been smoking Metros, and what do you do with a suggestion once it is implemented? That would be an interesting addition to your Suggestion Tracking List.

We seem to sweat the small stuff a lot around here and in my opinion, this is the small stuff.

It's a new topic because this one is focusing on a specific proposal that's different from the original. I think it's sensible this way, though it might have been better to give it a more specific title as well; it's no longer about flushing, but sorting.

This version of the suggestion has come up before, and I doubt that I was the first one to raise it; I'll consider the credit to be shared with all those who've already been down this road.

scoutmaster:

Part Two refers to the previous topic that Retired-Coastie started on "flushing of topics", which can be seen at:

Part 2 of...

Just wondering, however, why make a "Part Two" new thread? Why not just add to the on-going discussion with a post that reads: "An alternate method of making the "Show topics that I participated in" Tab more useful would be ..." and simply post it to the already on-going thread, substance and suggestions to what's already being discussed. Especially as this thread reads: "This was suggested...in Flushing: Show topics..."

If you're saying this was suggested in the topic on the same issue, why start a new thread on the topic? Just wondering, that's all.

Maybe the original post from this thread can be added to the previous Retired-Coastie thread and this thread closed. Just a suggestion.
