Hi Y'all,

In BB10, there is a share option, but it only shares info about GasBuddy website.
I feel there should be a Share feature associated with each gas station's pricing. When you find the cheapest gas in town, you should be able to share that info via email, text or BBM. ie:

To: MyBuddy
From: Me
Subject: Cheap Gas

"GasBuddy is reporting fuel at 123.4 /litre at EFG (Ellymay's Fine Gas), reported 2 hours ago!"

After all, sharing is the best feature on smart phones.

It might be helpful if dannomillano, who started this thread six weeks ago, let people know if any of the responses were informative or useful.

Just tell them about GB so they can check spot prices for themselves at any time without having to wait for someone else to let them know which way prices are headed.

When I get an alert from GB about rising prices I usually send an email to several folks that I think will benefit from the info. However I also recommend that they install the GB app so they can get the info directly.

Some of my "recomendees" are still in the Jurassic cellphone period and still use a non-smartphone and the mobile version of GB is not possible for them.

I'm not the only one Byte Doc. There are other who feel the same way I do.

Now back to your regularly schedule discussion regarding "Sharing Gas Prices".

scoutmaster, give it a rest.

TPTB here at GB are clearly aware of the Wiki and clearly don't mind anything that is being done with it or what it contains. You appear to be the only person worried about it. Get over it.

Ahh TxJeans there is the rub! There is a filter on what gets entered in the wiki! And TPTB at gasbuddy.com should require CK to have a disclaimer on that wiki stating they don't endorse it and it has nothing to do with this site and require CK to remove all images used that he took from this site.

Scoutmaster - of course it was added to the wiki. It is CK's wiki and he has stated he has no "filter" based on responses here. There is no quality check of any idea. It is just every idea that CK sees as a "suggestion". I have no use for CK's list and don't check it but did introduce him to the wikispaces.

The only problem I have is that too often someone new comes here and thinks that this is some sort of official tracking list that is used by the PTB at Gasbuddy.

Back to the OP's suggestion, I can see this feature getting way out of control. If my Gasbuddies start sending me alerts of what they feel is the cheapest price in town, I will be blocking and ignoring with no second chance.

So what if the cheapest price in town is at station XYZ if it is not near my travel path or I have already filled my tank. The "cheapest" price in town can be seen by anyone looking at the list.

Now, a price alert on a price war like when Wawa opened - I posted in the Tampa forum with notice in the subject line so folks would know if it was in their area. Those that want to get the most out of the gasbuddy participate in their local forums for local news on gas, including things like the Publix gas coupons, and new stations getting ready to open, or a recent radio station gas gift certificates being given at a local group of stations.

I give this idea a thumbs down based on the initial presentation, but am open for a more flushed out version that "might" change my mind.

Great points made all around. This is not a good idea but I'm betting it was added to the wiki.

This could clog the GB mail servers like crazy! And what if those "buddies" that get this e-mail live 500 miles away? Why would they care what price are where you are?

I can't think of a faster way to get GB's mail servers blacklisted for what will be perceived by many as spam. Want to share a price with a non-GB user? Fire up your email and send them a message from your own account.

I suspect this feature would get a flurry of use and die off.
That said, when a new station here opened, they had extra low price that spun off a mini price war. What I did, was post the information in the local forum with a subject line that indicated price war low price and location with the details. The price war lasted about 4 days.

The thing is, I travel around the bay area and would need to have many different lists for those that would be interested in the "price alert" because they would be traveling in that section of town/metro area. If I see one near my residence, there would be a different group than if I see a low price near my work, or where I "play". I am sure my GBs across the other side of the pond would not want to hear of price alerts on my side of the bay and vice versa.

So, I guess I would need you to flush this out a bit more as to how you really see it working.

I also see it as one more thing that would tempt distracted driving...

JMO - others are free to agree or disagree as they feel fit.

To GasBuddy, I am assuming that BBM is a BlackBerry Message.

The BEST way to share is to actually post the prices when you can, regardless of if you have met your point total for the day.

If I understand the suggestion correctly, you're saying that members who sees a low price on Gas Buddy should be able to "click a button" and send a message to people on a list he/she has that says "Hey, here's a low gas price I found on Gas Buddy."

Forgetting that the recipients may not be looking for gas at the time, and you're simply flooding their e-mail or text message box (or whatever a BBM is), it seems, as Scrapheap suggested, that if they join Gas Buddy they can check out fuel prices in their local area, not just receive a heads-up for an isolated gas station. It's entirely possible (actually, it's probable) that they'd receive the "share" notification while they're no where near the "cheap gas" and would waste money driving to the cheap gas station.

Why don't you just suggest your friends join GasBuddy? Then they can find the cheap gas whenever they want.
