As others have stated, this has been brought up a lot and it is usually by someone who hasn't taken full advantage of the points offered.

pupule777 -

I am sorry you feel you were upsetting us, and hope you did not take my post as being too harsh, but instead trying to explain why this idea doesn't get more traction when it comes up.

It is just that the topic has been discussed many times and it has been determined by the powers that be (and agreed with by many long time members) that you have to find a sweet spot for the number of points you give out for posting prices. Too little and you might as well give none, too many and you 1) disadvantage the rural folks that have less stations from which to post prices, and 2) encourage cheating from those that find it too difficult to get the points honestly (especially as more and more stations in some areas are only posting the REG price on the BIG board at the street.

As far as getting more points, you don't have to max out all your points daily to be a good member (as I indicated, some folks can't post 5 prices a day based on visual proof of price, but that doesn't mean they are slackers - I don't expect people to get off the expressway or go miles out of their way to find prices to post - you post the prices you observe while doing your normal day to day life). Many of us don't bother about points one way or another. I have been also criticized for not maxing my points (was not an active member for many years - didn't use the site after first joining and aren't out where I can get points on a daily basis.

However, since you were asking about more points, if you want to maximize your points you will post 5 prices/day, 5 forum posts/day (can be done in JFF -Just For Fun), and read 5 news articles/day and vote in the poll each week. Beyond that you can refer members up to the limit set.

As for CK's comment, it is just CK's poor taste in humor. Some here think it is funny, but many of us don't. This forum isn't supposed to be comedy central.

pupule777:

It's not that you're "upsetting" a lot of people, just that (as said below) this topic has been suggested numerous times and the moderators (and most long time participants on the website) haven't been persuaded that more points does little more than encourage false prices to be posted (in order to gain more points), and encourages more posting of fuels not available (in order to earn "Perfectionist" app awards), and simply repeated posting of the same price in order to move up the leaders lists and to "earn" different icons. The five post (for points) maximum, while it may discourage some members to do anything beyond the minimum to earn points, is a proven reasonable limit to (help) ensure accurate reporting. (Note: That doesn't take into consideration earning app awards which, while they don't result in points, do result in moving up award levels).

Sorry if you think that you're upsetting people, you're not. It's just that this suggestion has been suggested before, and before, and before.

geeezz !! I didn't mean to upset a lot of people !! I am retired and legally blind so I don't drive. I pick up as many prices as I can when my wife and I go shopping and my wife does too on her way home from work !! I post as many as I can because everyone benefits from it !! I have no idea scoutmaster how I could get any more points daily but I definately won't die if I don't get more !! It would entice a lot ofothers to do more I think.

I'm willing to bite my tongue on what many people call humor in these discussions but I agree that CampKohler's latest post below is both in poor taste and irrelevant to any discussion. This post should be removed and, if appropriate, the discussion continue.

"I was beginning to wonder if al Quaida had poisoned the water or something."

And you think this is funny, CampKohler? At best it is in exceptionally poor taste. I have reported it.

This suggestion has been added to the Suggestion Tracking List as a new topic on an existing subject.

We haven't had anyone give a "more points" suggestion in a long time. I was beginning to wonder if al Quaida had poisoned the water or something. But no longer; now we are back on track with puffy clouds and white picket fences as the sun sets on our idyllic world.

kwzh - correct! We post because it helps the membership and we help each other. As far as a limit on the number of posts to "get points" there is a balance. For those in urban areas they can probably get their points in any square mile. For those in rural areas, it may be difficult to reach full point level even at today's standards in a normal day. The cut offs were decided to make a reasonable playing ground w/out encouraging abuse to get points.

Some of us post all the prices that we spot because it's the right thing to do, not because we expect a reward.

Or, give points for posting, say 100 or 500 prices per day. Also, as I post in more than five topics a day, sometimes multiple posts in one topic, if I could get points for each and every message post I've made...

The above's not said frivolously. There's a reason that there's what most long time members consider a reasonable limit to "points accumulation". First, if there's a increase in the points availability, many members can be expected to simply post prices multiple times in order to gain points and/or to move to a "higher" icon and/or to move up the points leader board. There already are serious concerns about members posting false prices, posting prices for grades or types of fuel a station doesn't sell, and posting false prices for the sake of the "app awaards". All "extra points" will do is encourage false posting.

To me, if your concern is to help your fellow Gas Buddy members be more knowledgeable shoppers, the points are secondary to that goal. And, if the intent of getting "extra points" is to have more points to use for "buying tickets for the weekly drawing", again giving more points will simply encourage false posting in order to "buy more tickets".

Sorry, but this suggestion, "more points...more ways to get points...has been discussed in depth in multiple discussion threads and the near universal agreement, including that of the moderators, is that the "extra points" issue should not/is not going to happen.

All that said, maybe if you gave some reasons why there should be "extra points for posting...", your suggestion would carry more weight that it does now. And, maybe you can explain how you came up with "15" prices per day instead of 10, or 25, or 100 or more. (After all, there are many members who have said they routinely post 50 to 100 gas prices a day during their commute or work driving.)

I don't know that this would do anything but artificially inflate point accumulation, honestly. On a typical drive to work, I post 35 individual updates, and around 20 or so on my way home. Some are marquee prices (opposite side of the road), and the rest are directly from the pump. While yes, I'd like to see myself with more points, I'll earn them as everyone else has.

What would the benefits of this suggestion be, pupule777? You haven't maxed out your possible points to date.
