It's not so much a suggestion for improvement, but rather an observation of questionable practice:

When I'm in the 'news' and working on getting my points quota for the day, I read a news post and get points. Then I compose a reply to the post, but for merely composing a reply I get no points. When I post the reply, the top of the page showing the news post and my reply shows that I got the points for posting the reply. But, if I look at my points totals (up on another tab, and reloaded) I see that I am credited with reading an additional news item.

I'm thinking that this isn't the way the designers of this system intended the points system to work. While I'm curious about what the moderators think about this, I'll still take advantage of the situation as long as it exists. But, I'll always check....

Hope I didn't rain on the parade, I'm just asking...

Maybe I've lived a sheltered life, but Retired-Coastie's reference to a "four spooled door" went right on by me. I even Googled it. No such luck.

Do tell, Retired-Coastie, what is the "four spooled door" you speak of? A USCG term perhaps?

May Semper Paratus be your guide, sir!

Reading news should be about knowledge, not for points. Period. And yes the mods could stop the abuse if they choose to do so, but they would rather the good comments be washed down the page and out the four spool door then do something about it.

jrsva "Actually, I would like to see all points for forum posts dropped. That would mean that everyone posting in the forums would be doing so because he/she has something to say, not just earning points. It will not happen because it would reduce the number of page clicks, which would reduce GB’s ad revenue."

I agree that the best solution would be to eliminate all posting for points. I suspect that doing that, many of these boards and threads would be empty. I am amazed at the amount of stupid stuff that is really just for fun posting for points in many of the categories that are not truly "JFF" type. So, yes, click revenue would likely take a MAJOR hit.

No one is suggesting that you go out of your way to post gas prices ("out of your way" meaning any extra driving or any effort), just that if you're interested in the points, and you wrote "who is it that wouldn't want to win 250.00 in gasoline?", and you find the awards "a hoot", gas price posting is the quickest way to earn points and, consequently, the most opportunities to "buy" tickets in order win the weekly drawing. And, the app awards are for posting gas prices (not for message posts, news articles, or voting in the weekly poll).

And, just as a reminder, you don't have to wait until prices have completely expired before you post prices. You can update gas prices at any time, even if it's moments after another member updated the price. That earns you points and keeps the price visible for other members for a longer period of time before it eventually "completely expires" and isn't visible for others who might otherwise use that gas station.

Just an observation; that's all.

You could go and look at my various posts (there aren't that many of them yet) and see that I almost always post something approaching a well-thought-out response. I have never, and will never just post "OK". If I don't have something to say, I will just move along.

As for my current points total, I did explain, in a previous post, that I had a vehicle that wasn't conducive to just going around and updating old prices like I do now, so shortly after I got a Gas Buddy account I went dormant on the 'price entry' side. I did use the service to get lower prices, however, just what the system intended. Also, when I started there were no 'awards' and now I find them to be a real hoot, even if it's just a hoot for me.

I take care of my 84 year old father (the term is 'caregiver') and we just jump in the little put-put to drive around the Central Coast, sometimes. Getting Gas Buddy data, while not exactly 'on the side', isn't the primary focus either. On the other hand, yes, I do participate in all this for the points more than just to help all the Gas Buddy users out. But if there's a station where the prices have completely expired, I will fill them in anyway. While I realize that the probability of winning is quite low, it is non-zero. And just exactly who is it that wouldn't want to win 250.00 in gasoline?

And this post gets me to 975 points for the day....

While I deplore the fluff posts in Newsville, I would hate to see points earning for news comments dropped. I have never been to JFF and have never posted “OK” or any other fluff comment insofar as I can recall. I like to post a few comments in Newsville each day, mostly of a serious nature, occasionally humorous based on some previous comment.

Actually, I would like to see all points for forum posts dropped. That would mean that everyone posting in the forums would be doing so because he/she has something to say, not just earning points. It will not happen because it would reduce the number of page clicks, which would reduce GB’s ad revenue.

So, it sounds like you're saying that posting to the news forum, since it reloads the news page, is giving you credit for the news item a second time, in addition to the message posting credit. Yes, I can see how that could be happening, and it's reasonable to report it. Thanks for doing so.

However, if your reason for responding to the news item is to get your message posting points, rather than to actively contribute to the discussion, then I would recommend that you stop doing that. Almost all of the news comments are useless fluff; even if yours usually isn't, I believe it would improve the quality if more people did their "daily five" message posts in Just For Fun, and then made the decision about whether to post to a news discussion only *after* it would make no difference to their point score.

Just a suggestion, but if you're working on your "points quota for the day", you might not want to complain about the ease of earning points by way of "reloading". That said, you're missing the opportunity of significantly earning your "points quota for the day" by not posting gas prices. If points are that significant, you've left more than a half million fuel price points "on the table" and about overall points.

Hope that doesn't rain on anyone's points parade, but just noting it in case maximizing points earnings is significant.

Many of us bring up a single news item and hit F5 4 times to get the points.
