I notice that in rural parts of the state, when a gas station's prices aren't posted for over a certain length of time the station icon disappears from the maps page (until you toggle down and search for it or go to the Master List). I think this discourages people from reporting prices for that station.

I've noticed this several times lately when passing through towns I have not visited before. In fact, yesterday in northern Indiana there was a station across the street from two others that didn't show up in the list. I tried refreshing to no avail and moved on.

So you are suggesting that the MGP map always show all stations? Wouldn't that be the same as asking for the map to be defaulted to All Stations?

The OP was talking about the maps on the full site. For those talking about the app, there is a known bug where stations that exist in the MSL do not show on the list view. They will show on the map view. You can often see them on the list view if you choose a different grade of fuel.

There are two stations in particular that disappear and have to be located on the map feature, even when prices are regularly updated at them. Once they are selected and updated, they will appear on the list once again.

MplsMickey:
"What is the purpose of having them hidden?"

There is (if you have the option of having stations displayed with no prices) no purpose to having them hidden. There is a purpose in having them not displayed in order to clear up room for those stations with prices. Two entirely different things.

The flippant response would be, if you want stations to be displayed, post prices to those stations if you think that might encourage others to report prices, but that's not necessarily as flippant as it might seem. About 25 percent of all active Gas Buddy members (according to a recent poll) either do not or very seldom post any gas prices. Simply displaying the names or identification of stations without prices doesn't serve any purpose for a quarter of the Gas Buddy membership. Similarly, many others (perhaps most) post prices from those stations listed on their app (in the case of the iPhone, the station is displayed with or without a current price) and can update a station whether there's a current price posted or not.

Maybe the answer is, if you want to encourage people to report prices for those stations, is to make a constant effort to post prices as frequently as possible. That's not saying you're not doing that, but rather, if you think price posting is contagious and people will be more inclined to post prices for a station if it's displayed (i.e., not disappeared), then they may be even more inclined to update prices for that station rather than post prices from scratch. Maybe.

They aren't hidden. IF no price is reported there is no need for them to be on the map associated with the price list. On the Android app you have the option of showing all stations or only those with posted prices.

Oh yeah, I know how to find the stations again by scrolling down. My suggestion was only that maybe the icons should not disappear at all. What is the purpose of having them hidden?

The default time on the map is 48 hours. You can scroll down to the lower right hand corner and change the time to 96 hours or Show All Stations to see more.
