The Recent Winners page often lags behind several weeks until contest winners claim their prize. Instead of waiting until someone claims a prize to update the list, why not place something like, "Winner Has Been Notified" as a place holder opposite the weekly drawing date as a place holder. As of this writing, there's a gap for the May 6 -- May 12 drawing winner.

This suggestion was inspired by discussion -- including bytebug's question wondering why anyone would want to know? -- in a Recent Winners Update??? thread in TBTU. Commenters there point out that the obscure terms and conditions of drawings explain the gap but note that the question has been asked before.

Implementation of this suggestion would put it upfront for everyone to see and avoid future repeats of what is now a most reasonable question.

Obviously I think notice is useful but I think scoutmaster's correct that the messages won't eliminate the starting of "The drawing was yesterday/last week, why hasn't the winner been announced" posts or the implied "Gas Buddy is tricking us" innuendos.

SUVFan:
I understand it was humor; I just think that "bathroom" or "poop" comments aren't necessary. Especially by a senior member who sets the tone for others. But that's just my opinion.

Did you read #5 SUVFan? That explains the process and time frame and answers the question "Why no winner?"

The Terms and Conditions are on the entry page and should be on the prize winners page.

I don't think any message will eliminate people asking "Who won?" People want to be spoon fed.

Frankly, I appreciate CampKohler's attempt at humor. A Clancy fan myself, my guess is that the paraphrase was needed to clean the statement up sufficiently for use on the family friendly GB site. Clancy probably used one of the seven forbidden words on George Carlin's famous list (warning, the list appears at the link) for which "poop" is a synonym? And I think minor departures from popular style manuals may be excused due to the lack of one on the GB site and the woeful post editing tools that are available to us here. It's not like these posts could be confused with a formal paper or a piece of non fiction!

Regarding the question, "Why do we need something MORE for those who don't read what is already available?" I observe that, first, Contest Rules and Regulations do not answer the question folks are asking. Gas_Buddy accurately observed on May 31st that the one liner suggested in this thread "should eliminate future threads asking 'Why no winner?'" Nothing in the rules answers that directly. One might be able to infer the answer from what is in the rules, but that's asking an awful lot, considering how often the question gets asked.

Second, the contest rules are not even linked on the prize winner page. Adding that link to the direct explanation to the question, "Why no winner?" might be appropriate.

BTW, at this point two competing one liners have emerged. Kwzh suggested, "Winner is being contacted" (parentheticals deleted) on May 30th, while Gas_Buddy suggested "A winner has been selected and confirmation is pending" in that same May 31st post. Either is better than what I proposed in the lead post, though I guess I lean toward the succinct nature of kwzh's suggestion.

That's CampKohlers attempt at humor Gas_Buddy. And not a very good attempt.

If you're going to paraphrase Clancy you don't need to use quotes. For that matter the comment isn't really necessary or expected from a senior member. In my opinion

As I read in a Tom Clancy novel (paraphrased):
"Reach out for hope with one hand and for poop with the other, and see which fills up first."

SUVFan,

I think the Prize Entry form has been the same for quite awhile.

Again, I think this is a non-starter. The rules and other important stuff are right here. Why do we need something MORE for those who don't read what is already available?

This TBTU thread by newbie Tulip786 is another example of why this suggestion should be implemented. The thread was opened and closed in the span of about 5 hours, which is appropriate considering that the OP's specific question was answered. Kudos to the mods for being so prompt!

It makes me think that for every thread like this that someone starts, there are probably many more folks who visit the page and wonder the same thing, as the site's rule about waiting until the prize is claimed is certainly not intuitive.

Scrapheap, I was thinking of our ability to control notifications via email through the Member Preferences button, which would be a form of email.

I just took a look at the Prize Entry page and see they have an input field for an email address. I've never entered a drawing and have no idea how long it has been this format.

So I guess that's probably the address they use to reach someone and not the one used to sign up for the site, if that's different. So the only notification problem that should occur would be when the notification goes to a spam folder as Gas_Buddy indicated or the person uses something other than their regular email address to avoid spam resulting from the sale of addresses.

Gas_Buddy does a great job of summarizing the best argument for this feature.

Disabling notifications doesn't preclude e-mails from the moderators; it precludes notifications about message requests and buddy notifications, and price alerts.

I would imagine that the biggest "prize notification e-mail" problem is that an e-mail program is treating the incoming e-mail as spam, which would be something beyond the control of Gas Buddy.

It would make sense - from the perspective of the how many topics have been created asking about "why no weekly winner this week?" - to have a placeholder in the "GasBuddy Prize Give-Away Winners" block that reads:

"A winner has been selected and confirmation is pending."

If nothing else, it should eliminate future threads asking "Why no winner?"

SUVFan - I'm not aware of a way to disable emails from the moderators from this site. How would you do that?

I think the current method is sufficient. The winner is notified in ten (10) days via the e-mail address used to register.

It's up to the member to make sure they either check that address and/or make sure e-mail from Gas Buddy is not automatically being deleted or tossed into the spam folder OR changing their e-mail address for this site.

I would expect that a fair number of gbs disable email notices from the site. I'm not aware that you can pick and choose which type of communications make it through? If not, that's another potential site improvement.

Assuming that a fair number of gbs will disable notifications, that's another reason to highlight the fact that the winner has not claimed the prize by adopting the suggestion in the lead post, using kwzh's modified text.

""If you play and you aren't notified you didn't win." Or, they've been trying to contact you and haven't yet succeeded. (Do they do this through email only?)"

It states

"Winners will be notified by email within ten (10) days of the drawing."

So the primary method is e-mail. So if you won, you should get an e-mail at the address you used to sign up. If you never check that e-mail address, then, oh well!

Well, not annoying the membership with continual inquiries as to who won is being courteous and kind.

And by knowing where to look for the information is being prepared.

>If you play and you aren't notified you didn't win. Pretty simple.<

Agreed. There's no shortage of that mindset, and nothing intrinsically wrong about that kind of attitude.

But some folks might feel loyalty to their GB friends. Others might strive to be friendly, courteous or kind toward others or are simply cheerful, generally. Most here probably strive to be thrifty, at least when it comes to gas purchases. And there's no doubt that the more reverent among us would choose to celebrate the success of someone else more enthusiastically than their own.

By my count, the concept of congratulating or at least acknowledging the prize winner draws from 7 of the 12 components of the scout law, a code that anyone would do well to strive to live by. It's a worthy endeavor, and I've seen any number of that type of congratulatory messages on various whiteboards. The prize winner page probably exists, in part, for that very purpose. And kwzh's tweak of the language improves the suggestion.

Bottom line, if you don't care to see who won the prize, don't click on the link to the page containing that info. Pretty simple.

Both are trying to do the same thing, but are a bit different due to where on the site they are taking effect. Both could be adopted.
