Why is it that when you log in you have to move the cursor to the name field before you start typing?
The same thing applies when you are posting a message.

In most other sites that I use, the cursor will automatically be placed where it is needed.

Not major problems but annoying and I would assume easily fixed.

I have less of a problem with the log-in (this site I have auto login from my home PC so even if I scroll down, the fields are already filled in). I think it is not uncommon with LOG INs, however most of the forums I participate in default the cursor to the reply field when you hit the reply button so that you are ready to type your reply.

The lack of this behavior has been commented on previously on these boards. It is part of programming to set default behaviors for cursor movement.

Looks like it is a Canadian thing.

I do like your idea.

Other Sites

Scouting Forum

Bank

Craigslist

Conversion site

I'm not being critical, CookieAcct. I'm just pointing out what happens on this site is not uncommon on other sites.

Scrapheap> I have tested the following financial institutions:
Scotiabank
TD Canada Trust
Royal Bank of Canada
CIBC
President's Choice Financial
Chase Canada
All of them place the cursor at the log in entry field.

Actually, the main page *does* have username and password fields if you're not logged in, but they're pretty far down on the page, and it's easy to miss them -- so it may well be simpler to click the Login button to get to the login-specific page. Except that this one *is* actually easy to reach, if you know ahead of time that a single tab will advance to that field. (I just checked this to confirm that it's still true.)

As far as the log in - I have remember me set, so don't know on this site.
On most other sites I visit the username and password are right next to the login button so you enter the user name and password and hit login. You have to manually advance as the program would not know when you were finished with entry of username or password. Here the user name and password are on another page. It would be logical to click log in and when the login page pops up to default the cursor to the user name field.

Several forums I post in when you hit reply your cursor defaults to the reply box. Not rocket science.

I work with folks that design software and we often make suggestions regarding changes to auto default for cursor placement. We often have different cursor functions in software from auto-advancing to next field to default placement of cursor to defaulting choice of tabs.

Sorry SM if that is foreign experience for you...

While I like your idea, I just tested your claim at American Express, Discover, Pentagon Federal Credit Union, my bank and a sports discussion board I engage in. The only site that behaves as you claim is Discover. Everything else behaves like GasBuddy, or even more convoluted.

Scoutmaster sure likes to criticize other peoples' suggestions doesn't he?

The banking sites I use are good examples. Their log in screens place the cursor in the user name field. Other forums blogs do the same for both logging in or posting messages.

Does anyone know of other sites that are like GB?

I'd previously noted this in regards to the Post a Reply link, within the past year.

This suggestion has been added to the Suggestion Tracking List as a new subject.

This idea was brought up years ago, but no longer appears in this topic due to ageing.

SM - I don't know about logging in as I don't log out very often and have to log back in, but it would make sense for the cursor to default into the text field when you click on the Post a Reply.

Well, you should only have to log in once so I don't see it as such a big deal.

I agree. And, it should have been incorporated into the latest update.
This has been mentioned before.
