pass out more prizes, give $100 cards instead of $250. More winners, more members happier. It will get more popular!

I've occasionally suggested that the prize *vary* from one week to another -- with enough advance notice that nobody is "wasting" tickets on a contest that they don't think is worth entering. Note that some people might prefer entering a low-value drawing because they believe there will be less competition.

Scrapheap:

Okay; sorry, it wasn't as recent as I thought, back when the prizes were $50, $100, (and, I think, for a short period, $400) and included scooters and electric bikes.

I looked at all the results for the last 3 years and there were no $50 winners in that time frame.

Excuse me but when was this? I don't remember this ever being the case.

In the past there have been variations of prizes. There was, relatively recently, five $50 prizes each week. People at that time complained that the prize only amounted to roughly a tank of gas (some said it gave them only about two tank fulls; others said $50 didn't even give them a full tank when the weren't even on empty).

After the prize was changed to a larger amount, people started multiple topics "suggesting" that there be "a lot of winners each week, maybe make the prize $10 so more people would win, and more people would enjoy free gas", etc. If you have one large prize, people want more winners; if you have multiple prizes in lesser amounts, people want a more valuable prize, one worth their time and effort

And, so it doesn't go by, one person suggested making the prize $1 in oder to maximize the number of winners. And the problem with that suggestion is the member wasn't joking. Still others have suggested one monthly prize of a larger amount.

All that notwithstanding, Gas Buddy is a business. And a major part of the prize, regardless of what the prize is, is to attract new members to the website, after which these members will take part in the "helping of each other be more knowledgeable about where to shop for the best prices", not necessarily to keep "more members happier". That might be a minority view (of the more vocal members), but it's a realistic view from a business perspective. And, again, like it or not, a $250 prize will attract more new members than a lot of $25, $50, or even $100 winners will.

Actually, the proposal suggests switching the payoff value from $250 to $100, which would indeed allow for more winners without adding revenue. However, I think the mods have concluded that the majority prefers the higher value prizes, because $100 is only about 3 fills, and hence doesn't seem like a very big win.

So Passmygas, are you going to be donating prizes to Gasbuddy so they can give out more prizes? Or, do you want this to be a pay site so they can give out more prizes?
