It's true that I'm actually authorizing GasBuddy to send an email with my name on it, but conceptually, I think of it as sending an email through GasBuddy.

This suggestion has been added to the Suggestion Tracking List as a new subject.
GB: If you enter an E-mail address, that address will receive a msg containing a canned GB msg along with your personal msg. I sent one to Hank919 and he sent one to me as a test when somebody complained it wasn't working.

tamarabenison:
You're not e-mailing site recommendations to your friends. What you're doing is enabling Gas Buddy to know of people (i.e., your friends, contacts, acquaintances, etc.) that might be interested in knowing about Gas Buddy, and leaving it to Gas Buddy to contact them (your friends, etc.). You're out of the loop of forwarding a "Hey, here's a website I think you should know about...hey, send this to everyone you know" type of e-mails. You're not the one sending your friends, etc., spam, you're only letting Gas Buddy know of people that might be interested in knowing about the site and the benefits.
That said, there are only a limited number of points you can earn during your membership under the "Tell-A-Friend" program (1,200 points); you'll earn, as you already know, many more points by posting gas prices, reading the news articles, taking part in discussions, and voting in the weekly polls. If all you've done is to not earn 1,200 points over your (hopefully) long membership, it's not that big a deal. Your price posting is what counts, in my opinion, and you're already doing that.
Just my opinion.
