Alaric76: There seems to be a lot of pluses going for the LED bulbs. -Instant full lumens when powered up.
-Works well in cool temperatures.
-Uses less energy compared to other bulb types of equivalent lumens.
-Less toxic.
-Good colour rendition

If the LEDs bulbs are constructed in a similar fashion like my flashlights, then they should last a very long time.

batteries, those cfl death bulbs give off that poisonous mercury vapor if they break and they are fragile.

They make great outdoor lights, never blow out (floodlights are always in a hard to reach spot), and over the front door they don't short out like incandescent ones do from the 'shock' of closing the door. They wiggle slightly and we were constantly replacing them.

gascat, LED's do save and an unexpected benefit: they are tougher than regular and the chinese death bulbs, aka cfl's.

I bought 4 LED 'bulbs', haven't had time to really try them out yet.
If I like the light spectrum, I'll probably get more. I think they
have a good future.

The CFL's are 'OK'. We use a lot of spirals here. They are dirt cheap.
Very easy to find at around 1USD each, occasionally less, sometimes
free in giveaways from the local power company.

Good CFL life when used as a 'naked' bulb. Life can be a lot shorter
if you coop them up so air can't circulate. Best case is 'naked' and
upright like in a table lamp with shade. Pretty good is upside down-
like in our basement fixtures. They seem to last forever that way.
Worst case is upside down and totally cooped up inside an enclosure/
light diffuser. They get too hot that way.

Our local recycle place will take any reasonable quantity of used up
CFL's. They used to limit quantity. I'm up at the dropoff/recycle often
enough that it's very little hassle for me. In some areas, they make
it near impossible. That's just stupid.

Gas Cat: We also changed most of our lights to the LED variety, including the outdoor security lights (par 38). We used to have the cfl type, which was a joke as they were never good performers in cold conditions...they would take forever to reach optimium light output...

In general, I find cfl's to be mostly of a headache, they never seemed to last as long as whatever was stated on the box, and safely desposing them is a headache.

Prices have dropped quite a bit...I think you'll end up saving monies not only on the electric bill, but also from replacement costs.

Gas Cat: Thanks for the link, it didn't quite work for me but I looked it up.

Looks like you have quite the trip in planning. I've never considered a 19-day cruise before...that's quite a bit of time on board.

If you're not quite "cruised-out" by the time you get here, you might also consider going up to Alaska. It makes for a very nice and relaxing cruise. Plus, just like Tampa Bay, you board right at the Port of Vancouver, so no airplanes involved. Easy as pie :-)
