Hi Brillo8 and buddies

It's almost 20 degrees and fluffy snow is coming down. It's beautiful, but I'd like it to stop soon so I can take a little trip instead of shoveling!!!

Have a happy day, buddies

Hi Brillo8 and buddies

Bril...Sounds like you are in GOOD hands! Even though the screw-up happened, it's so nice your son is willing and eager to come over to help. I'll bet you get lots of visiting in, too. Keep up the good work...healing.

SNOW and ICE?? I still rather like it. I am leary of ice, though. Duane is still in Mexico and very glad he doesn't have to deal w/ all this! BUT...he has a bit of respiratory trouble. I'm wondering if, combined w/ his respiratory history, he can't shake it because it's so dry there.

It's been SO cold here, but sun shines and believe it or not, there is evaporation and the snow is slowly disappearing. I'm thankful for that.

Tomorrow I'm hoping to go look at a piece of Lk MI property farther north of me that Duane and his son is interested. Just hoping we don't get a real snow storm that will make it difficult to drive in to it.

So, today?? More work and then to the cottage.

Have a splendid day, buddies

Hi Beach

Well, we did receive another 6-7 inches of snow overnight Wednesday. Bright sunshine this morning hopefully will melt this crap. But you are right, I have a great excuse for not shoveling the darned stuff. I long ago lost my excitement for the occasional snow, but now after my accident, I downright despise snow (and ice)...lol. Perfect world, give me a place where I could wear cargo shorts year-round...

Most of my day is spent in a recliner in MILs living room. Remainder in bed. Either way, ankle is elevated in a big foam cradle. MILs cable is limited basic, so not much on. Found more via over-the-air with a small flatscreen my son brought me. Old 60s shows have passed the day so far...

...oh, and speaking of my son. Remember me mentioning I would receive home nursing care?? Well, it was to administer daily injections of Lovenox, a common anti-clotting drug used after hip, knee replacement. Anyway, ther was a screwup in the orders...home health sent me a physical therapist....NOT a nurse. So my son is giving me my injections. Proud of him. He loves doing it. Think I could do it myself...if the hospital had just asked..and offered to show me. Son received instruction from the pharmacist, who was glad to instruct.

Have a Fun Friday Beach!

23°, to 37° in Virginia Beach today.

HI Brillo8 and buddies

It's 4 degrees here at the cottage!!! The sun is shining but I don't think I'll venture out quite yet. I don't have to go to work, so I'll have a cup of coffee...that'll warm me up!

Hi Brillo8 and buddies

Bril...You sure have a great excuse for not shoveling...LOL!! So, are you catching up on sports and movies?? That's what I'd be doing...lol.

Mostly quiet day of work yesterday. Toward the middle of the afternoon, we started getting snow flurries which made for a bit of slippery driving. We ended up w/ about 3 inches more...not enough to shovel. The temps are still downright frigid!!

Off to work!

Hi Beach

Thank you! We had more snow yesterday afternoon thru the evening. Guessing it was about 3 inches. Man says after a relatively warm day today, we are due another snowstorm tonight, with another 3-6 inches. Obviously, I won't be going out in it...loll

Have a GREAT day Beach!

Hi Beach!

Broke the shovel, huh? Unfortunately, I broke my ankle.

Us Southerners definitely can't deal with snow and ice. :-( I sustained a pretty severe break/dislocation of my left ankle Sunday morning. I had just stepped into the culdesac in front of my MIL's house to walk to my son's house just a few doors down. Right foot slipped, left foot planted in a rut as I fell backwards...and snap! Broke both the inner and outer ankle knobs off. So my ankle was hanging by meat only. Laid there on the ice until the rescue squad arrived.

But I intend to get better. Was released from the hospital last night. Immediate danger is blood clots. So I'll have home nursing care here at my "new temporary" home at my MIL's in Virginia Beach...for the next couple weeks. At that point, hopefully I'll be allowed to make the drive home to North Carolina, where I'll continue followup care, and a few months of therapy.

Have a great day Beach!

Hi Billo8 and buddies

I spent another 2.5hrs on shoveling yesterday morning before the cold and more snow set in. Broke the shovel, too. At some places on the deck the depth was up to my knees.

I'm still here and you should see how beautiful it looks!

Hi Brillo8 and buddies

A few hours of moderated temps. Looks like I've got my shoveling work cut out for me....the deck at the cottage has a TON of snow on it! And getting more light snow. I should finish the driveway, too. It's all exercise, right???

Hi Brillo8 and buddies

Finally, we get a break in the weather! The temps were nearly 30 in my neck of the woods. I worked until 3:30pm and gathered a few things to take to the cottage.

I brought a snow shovel along and started right in w/ the end of the driveway. For about 2 feet into the drive, it was 12" or more and then it tapered to about 8-10. I worked at this for about 2hrs and I didn't completely finish the drive. I did cut 2 paths for my wheels and brought the car up to the cottage. With a little more shoveling...steps and some around the car, I could call it a day!

I'm going to treat myself to a fabulous hamburger from my favorite pub! NO cooking for me tonight!!

Have a terrific evening, buddies

HAPPY VALENTINE'S DAY to ALL!!

I worked delivering arrangements in 10 degree weather. Blowing snow kept me off the freeways, but the sun was out many times. The wind was bitter and frostbite could happen on bare skin in 15 min or less!

Deep freeze tonight!!

Hi Brillo8 and buddies

I am getting to feeling better but delayed going into Edible's for a couple of hours. Would you believe Larry went with me and did a major amount of deliveries? I could do the driving, but doing the entire job by myself would have been really tough. I'm in that state of half awareness so...NO overloads, please.

Getting bed early and Larry said he would go again tomorrow.

Hi Brillo8 and buddies

Got home about midnight last night. Uneventful flight and roads were very good for the drive from Chicago.

I got a bit of the cold Duane had last week and one ear is plugged due to pressure drop in the descent last night. And I work mostly outside tomorrow and the temps won't be higher than 20!

Hi Brillo8 and buddies

What a great, fun day yesterday! I desired to try a barbacoa before I leave here and that's what we did yesterday late morning. It's a roadside...actually many, many, many of them along the highway(s)...tent w/ tables, BBQing equipment, etc. This is where goat and lamb are roasted, served with fresh tortillas, chopped onion and cilantro, hot sauce. The lamb was YUMMY! From there, our host suggested a ride further north to a SPA area. But, we decided to stop before that and go through an abandoned silver mine. This was very interesting even though I didn't understand too much as everything was in Spanish...my first tour in a foreign language. But I thought it was very interesting anyway. I think we were up another 10K feet from Mexico City and it was something to walk the streets which were very hilly.

I am going to really miss being here...I go home tomorrow!

Have a super day, buddies

Hi Brillo8 and buddies

Today held a new adventure for me. Duane took me out to visit some of his late wife's family. We brought 2 large suitcases filled w/ her clothing from MI to leave for them. No English was spoken, and I don't speak Spanish! But we got along very well. They fed me some interesting soup of maize w/ big chunks of bone w/ meat on it. Once the soup was served, each one could add shredded lettuce, fresh onions, oregano. Also, the traditional hard corn tortillas were served and they put a smear of sour cream on them. After we were finished eating (about 4pm), Duane drove Mariana, me, and 2 granddaughters to their farm. The farm consists of about an 10+ acres on which they grow alfalfa. The farms are somewhat tiered and are irrigated by the smelliest water...waste water that travels from Mexico City, about 2hr to the south. I learned that the original crop is harvested for 7 yrs and then a different crop is planted for one yr. All very interesting.

Other sites we saw were quite a few cement manufacturing plants dotted around the landscape near the relatives town. Don't ask me the name of the town...I have to do some research on that.

The most funny thing that happened on this visit was that when Duane opened one of the big suitcases, I saw a yellow plastic bag on top w/ things in it, one of which looked like a pair of my underwear!!!!!!!! He handed the bag to me, I looked in, and sure enough, it was a bunch of both of our underwear....DIRTY, at that!!!!!!!!!!!! He didn't have a clue he had grabbed something that wasn't his late wife's. We laughed so hard!!!! Even the language barrier didn't matter...SO FUNNY!

So, he wanted KFC for dinner tonight and we stopped near our house for some...8pc for 100 pecos! That's less than 10 bucks! The Mexican KFC was very much like what we get at home...remember the original recipe that wasn't nearly as crispy as it is today? That's what we had...really good!

Never a dull day w/ Duane!

Hi Brillo8 and buddies

Another beautiful day in Mexico. Duane had his last treatment and is feeling a lot better, although his strength and voice are not all there yet.

He took me to a favorite dive for seafood soup. Very good! He has know this guy for about 15yrs. He custom made the spices for me so I could really enjoy the flavors. It had fish chunks, oysters, octopus, and many shrimp of varying sizes. Then, the sweet gal made a strawberry drink made from fresh strawberries...of course, canned Carnation milk...not the kind we have, and some water. Tasted like an ice cream base. Yummy.

The time here is getting shorter and I wish I didn't have to go home! But, all good things must come to an end, I guess.... :(

Hi Brillo8 and buddies

Bril...gosh! We got to 70. Yes, thanks, Duane is finally feeling better. It was such a struggle getting him to drink extra water while he was down. And his appetite was way off, so he didn't want anything to eat. Finally, today, the food is tasting acceptable and he even helped me fix dinner and washed the tail end of the dishes. I did 3 loads of laundry and he had enough energy to help hang it up and fold when clothes were dry. (He's pretty wonderful, even when isn't feeling his best.)

The last 3 days we have been making 3 trips/day to the clinic for those treatments and there are 2 left...tonight and tomorrow am. Then, he wants to try to take me to some friends/family to meet them before I go home. I haven't minded too much that we haven't been able to go many places...it's just such a pleasure being with him, no matter what we do.

Have a happy hump-day evening, buddies

Hi Beach!

Didn't hear anything about the fires.

Well, I see you did have quite an adventure with Duane on your trip. Sorry to learn he got sick, but does sound like with the meds, he should be feeling better each day now.

We're in Virginia Beach again. But headed home today, where it should reach 60° today. WooHoo! ...lol

Have a great day Beach!

Hi Brillo8 and buddies

Duane seems to improving ever so slightly and may be out of the woods. He must go to the clinic 3 times a day for the next couple of days for nebulizer treatment.

On the way to the clinic last night there were massive fires not far from where we were headed. When I asked if our family member accompanying us knew why, he didn't know. I wondered if it was connected to their holiday...National Constitution Day. Did any of this make the international news? There was a tremendous amount of smoke!

Heading for the clinic soon.

Have a fabulous day, buddies

Hi Brillo8 and buddies

So, we went to the local clinic, of sorts. Once Duane got examined, he had to go down the street to get chest x-rays. Then a wait for the doctor to look at the pics and determine what to do. He must go 8 more times for a nebulizer treatment, having the first one already. Also, additional 4 meds and drops for his eyes. Luckily, they don't cost too much.

Still having trouble getting him to eat, but he is starting to drink more water. I don't know what I would do if we didn't have family willing and able to help deal with all the running around and advice from the doctor...I just don't speak more than a few words of Spanish. Such a disadvantage!

It's not all that warm here, but I see back home we have tons of snow. With any luck, most will be gone by the time I get back!

Have a terrific day, buddies

Hi Brillo8 and buddies

Today is Super Bowl Sunday and we are watching the game...wow! Those Seahawks!

I'm also nursing Duane back to health. He is so discouraged as he has never been this sick, so he says. I know he has a deep, rough cough, a bit of a runny nose, and sometimes the chills. I am trying hard to get him to drink lots of water which he usually doesn't mind when he feels well. He can be so obstructive to many of my suggestions at first, but I can say, we are making progress.

If he doesn't feel better tomorrow, he thinks he'll go to the doctor. I hope he will take me with him.

Tomorrow is a national holiday...Constitution Day and the banks are closed. I've been hearing LOTS of firecrackers off and on all day long starting at 7:30 this am!

Have a SUPER Sunday, buddies

Hi Brillo8 and buddies

I had meant to post the previous message last night, but Duane was really ill and I was doing more than usual and didn't finish this task.

So, we had a visit from one of our family who went with us on the trip. He was able to find out what actually happened on the road w/ the road block.

He said that a young shepherd from that very small town we had gone through had been accosted by a couple of known, local thugs, wanting to steal some of the boy's sheep. Apparently, the young man put up some resistance and pulled out a pistol and shot/killed the two. The police came to the scene and wanted to take the young man into custody, but the town's people put up a big fuss and blocked the road so the police couldn't leave. The town's people were more than happy they were rid of the thugs.

Duane, although not feeling well at all, took me to the market and we shopped for fresh fruits and vegetables! OMG! I have died and gone to heaven, I think! We got goyava, mangos, huge tangerines, tomatoes, onions, carrots, avocados, garlic, raisins, and pineapple!!! I have washed all the fruit and carrots and tomatoes...now for the cooking and eating!

BTW..the carrots are out of this world and so is the pineapple! I'm hoping all this good produce will get Duane well faster!

Hi Brillo8 and buddies

Bril...we're back! Had a SUPER time!! I love being w/ Duane...as his sister's say: any time w/ Duane is an adventure!!! And no lack of adventure on our recent trip.

The most exciting is the last one we had. We left Huatulco about 3:30pm Wed for our journey home. About 5pm on a smaller road which is really a nice road going through the mountains, we came to a sudden stand-still. There were quite a few cars ahead of us so we couldn't see what the problem was. Of course we waited and waited for this to clear up, but after a couple of hours and really NO forward progress, the bus driver turned off the engine. Surprisingly, no one ventured to talk to other drivers ahead of us and we kept seeing lots of vehicles coming from the site of the hold-up. We couldn't be sure at first if they were ones we saw pass us thinking they would be able to get through.
It was quite worrisome, but we got home safely albeit very tired and Duane getting sicker.

Hi Brillo8 and buddies

Bril...we are BACK! And what an adventure! As Duane's sister's say...A day with Duane is ALWAYS an adventure. The biggest part of the adventure is as follows:

We got back to MCity and home by 3am and that was after we left Huatulco at 3pm Wed!!!!! Our driver picked a really nice way on a very good 2 lane road through the mountains. By 5pm we came upon a huge line of traffic stopped going in our direction. We waited several hours with no word as to what was the issue even though cars were headed toward us. We just didn't know if they had just given up and turned around, or what. No one even tried to find out how long the line was! By 9pm we were to committed to stay the night! We didn't hear any gun fire, so we were quite certain we weren't in any REAL danger. Duane said he had heard reports from sometime ago that teachers were putting up road blocks in protest for higher wages. So, we spent the night on the bus...in a very remote area w/ only a very, very small community behind us about a mile or so. We sat on our bus as we watched other tour buses which had probably turned around and leaving through the night. Many Mexicans were seen walking toward the blockade and it was hard to determine if they could get through. What a mess! No food or water except the little bit each of us brought. And no bathroom facilities! Thankfully, the night was warm enough to be in the bus which wasn't running. Outside, a jacket was sufficient.
In the morning, the leaders thought it best to head back and take a different route. The inherent danger was that another blockade could have been erected while we were standing still. Fortunately, we were able to make our way to safety. However, would anyone demand a stop for something to eat??? NO! We stopped for more fuel, but only some very sketchy shops had anything worth buying. We got some nice local bread to eat with our water.
All this was happening as Duane was coming down with a chest cold which started during the night before we left Huatulco. He is fighting it still with a bad cough.

I had such a great time. We swam at a total of 5 different beaches on this adventure. I got to see some wonderful sea life including turtle nests that had caution tape around for preservation.

Now, to rest up for the next adventure!

Have a super evening, buddies

Bril...We are having a great time! Chicago was our brief stop-over for the flight to Duane's other house...remember last year? I'll be here for 2 more weeks. The weather is in the low 70s EVERY day and quite cool at night. I'll try to keep up with GBs, but might be difficult as we are going many places.

Have a safe and fun trip, too, Bril.

Hi Brillo8 and buddies

The temps have moderated and the snow on the ground has changed texture...so, we went X-country skiing in Duane's backyard. Got about an hour of good exercise!

Now to pack and head to his sister's in IL. Really looking forward to our visit!

Have a splendid day, buddies

Hi DoggII. Welcome!

Hi Brillo8 and buddies

Getting more tolerable...temp-wise. The rest of the week is shaping up to be a good driving week. I am very grateful for that for my work and pleasure.

Off to work.

Have a wonderful day, buddies

Hi Brillo8 and buddies

Bril...I've been saying for sometime now, that with Duane in my life, problems are just problems...not catastrophes. He has such a joy for life!

Had a very short day of work and now to get packing!

Hi Beach!

Gee, that was quite a story. :-)) So glad things turned out ok. You do lead a very active life!!....lol. Gee, probably many lessons learned from that experience! Number 1 for me is to always try and keep my iPhone on me.

Well, no snow for us. It's 50° with rain here this morning / today. High of 67° today.

Have a great week Beach!

Hi Brillo8 and buddies

Well, the unthinkable happened to me...Duane dropped me off about 11:15pm and I decided right then and there that I'd go to the cottage for final check before my trip. I packed and drove there, dragged all my bags across deep snow and up the very snowy steps, did some shoveling so I could get in and then dragged the bags into the cottage. I thought it would be a good idea to do just a bit more shoveling to get the steps in shape. I closed the door and got that done, went to the door and found it was LOCKED! ALL my things were in there...my purse, my keys, my cell phone, my computer....everything! It was then about 1:15am. NOW WHAT??? I did some more shoveling while I contemplated how I could fix this, when the neighbor's kitchen light went on. I managed to rouse her and she let me in. She let me use her cell phone to try to call Duane and he must have been sound asleep. My neighbor invited me to sleep on her couch and I finally got to sleep by 3am. Around 7am I was able to reach Duane and we worked out sort of a plan. That was a great relief and I was able to get another hour or so of sleep. With nothing to eat or drink, I got up and went out into the BEAUTIFUL morning to get the driveway opened up enough for Duane to walk back from the street w/o wading through the deep snow. After about 2 hrs, I made it to the street...no Duane. So, I went back to my neighbor's to use her phone again and Duane didn't answer. But about 15 min later, there he was. The first thing out of his mouth was: Forget the house, let's go ice fishing!!! He is so fantastic! However, he went to work and found that the patio door was the easiest least possible entry w/o damaging too much. I WAS IN!!
I ate a little something and then we went out to the lake to see the ice and all the fishermen. There were at least 50 shelters up on Muskegon Lake and many more w/o the shelters. He was so tempted to get out there. But, alas, he had to make his way to his place in the Detroit area and see his sons and do some work. I'll see him on Thurs.

Well, so much for all the excitement for this weekend!!

Have a safe and pleasant day, buddies

Hi Brillo8 and buddies

Still snowing! Although, not enough to make shoveling necessary. I'm about to leave for work and later a dinner date with Duane.

Have a delightful day, buddies

Hi Brillo8 and buddies

Bril...did you see the national weather news? I was told by Larry that our heavy Arctic Clipper made the news. I had to go downtown by 7 tonight and it wasn't too nice then. When I left, it was REALLY bad! Luckily, not many cars on the roads but all the little hills were nearly impossible. Also, the visibility was almost 0.

Hope you are all well and safe.

Have a nice evening, buddies

Hi Brillo8 and buddies

Bril...Yes, after a good eye-washing and rest, things are a lot better, thanks. I think I'll try to wear my contacts tomorrow.

It's so bitter cold...can't wait for warmer weather SOON! Won't be long, now.

Stay warm, Bril.

Have a happy hump-day evening, buddies

Hi Beach

Sorry to hear of your problem. That must have been terribly uncomfortable. And to occur while driving too. So unfortunate. Hope you are feeling better!
