I decided to start slowly rebuilding the nest egg I liquidated to pay some bills. I put $100 in each of ten stocks, companies that I like (or don't like for two): Becton Dickinson (BDX), CenturyLink (CTL), Darden Restaurants (DRI), Kroger (KR), Quest Diagnostics (DGX), Phillips 66 (PSX), Royal Dutch Shell Class B (RDS B), Target (TGT), Wal-Mart (WMT), and Zions Bancorporation (ZION). I used ShareBuilder, where you can do dollar-based investing. How did your stocks perform today?

Haven't commented on this topic all week. Facebook has been keeping me distracted.

But I did see a comment from ShareBuilder about the stock dividend that Google recently made. I was curious and I looked. What Google did was to issue a dividend as a new class of stock. When they did, they changed the ticker symbol of the old stock, which used to be "GOOG," to "GOOGL." Then, they went in and gave the new stock the ticker symbol "GOOG."

I also heard a comment when I was watching GM CEO Mary Berra during her appearance before the House that GM had an engineer who revised the ignition switch on the Chevy Cobalt and gave the new part the same part number as the old part. A Congressman, who was a Professional Engineer before he went to Congress, asked why any company would do such a thing. Then, there was another question about whether the engineer was still working at GM.

IMHO, if the engineer isn't working at GM, he or she is off working at Google in their Investor Relations department. It would make a more sense to keep the old stock what it was and to assign a new class of stock a new ticker symbol. It would make even more sense to do a nice simple stock split like the great majority of companies do.

Just heard on the news that Google was trying to trademark the word "Glass." That's ridiculous. Am I going to have to go to a restaurant and ask the waiter for a "glass(R)" of iced tea?

Spring proxy season is underway. I've gotten two of those dark blue Broadridge Financial Services shrink wraps with a proxy statement, proxy card, and annual report in it. Boeing sent out a report with a full-color airplane on the cover, while Honeywell didn't waste any money impressing the stockholders.

Spring 2012, I decided getting all the proxies voted for my IRA was too much of a mess. And I had to explain to my BFF why I had stock in Hawaiian Electric Industries. (High stock dividends. Electricity costs around 37ยข a kilowatt hour in Hawaii. They produce it with oil that must be hauled in.)

The market is rocketing along to the green side today. The three major indices, the DJIA, the "tech-heavy NASDAQ", and the S&P 500, are all up over 1% today. My taxable account is currently up 10.82% (from up 9.78%). Phillips 66 (PSX) is rocketing upward another 3.61% so far today.

Talked to my Investment Counsel at Fisher Investments Friday and we had a 21-minute conversation about how things were going. He asked about my taxable account that we never transferred over because I killed the one with Scottrade first, then reopened a new one with Capital One ShareBuilder when I decided I had enough month left over at the end of the money. I told him I'd had twelve up and thirteen down that day. Also told him that my court case over my Ford Escape Hybrid Limited was still up in the air. Saturday, I got snail mail that reported that they had settled the case out of court and I wouldn't have to go to Missouri.

I'm glad that I dumped my Target stock on January 29th. I love shopping there, but I figured after the data breach nothing good was going to happen to TGT. Well, the latest revelation to leak out is that Target's IT department told management they had a problem two months BEFORE the data breach started. On that revelation, I'm certain TGT is going to plummet Tuesday. The plaintiff's bar will take them to the cleaners for all the customers that had their data exploited. Fortunately, I didn't shop at TGT between the time the data breach started and the data breach ended. And anyway, because I have a Target VISA that I only use at Target since they got rid of the rebates for using it at places other than Target, I would have never had one of my other cards compromised.

Market is closed today in the US, but the rest of the world is trading. My globally invested IRA that I usually don't talk about (because I don't pick the stocks, except for telling them I don't want companies that get a lot of income from alcohol, tobacco, or gaming) went up today, but all the changes were in foreign equities.

While I do use Capital One ShareBuilder (a company that defaults to dividend reinvestment), I go in and override their default choice. I accumulate dividends in my account until I get enough money to open another position. I will soon be opening a position in Taiwan Semiconductor (TSM). I wanted a semiconductor company because I didn't have one in my taxable account. TSM had the best metrics out there when I looked, and it adds to my global market exposure.

Didn't update this Wednesday... I only slept about four hours and fell asleep while watching the 9:00 PM news. Woke up after the numbers went away.

Portfolio performance since inception: Up 9.81% (from up 9.10%)

Trivia: I used to work on a computer system where "0981" was an error message that basically indicated the end of the world (at least until you got everybody off the system and cleaned up the database). It was caused when an app crashed with the database open for write (only one app could write at a time, but many could read). When I went to buy gas one time, I pumped $9.81 worth of gas (this was back when gas was about $1 a gallon, the good old days when cars were hangar queens). I walked in and said "Pump #X is broke... the display said I pumped $9.81 worth of gas!" The attendant said, "Yes, the pump IS broken! The top segment of the display doesn't work... you actually pumped $9.87 worth of gas!"

All-time performance by stock:
Best: Phillips 66 (PSX) - up 28.97%
Worst: Ford Motor Company (F) - down 2.15%

Daily performance by stock:
Best: Phillips 66 (PSX) - up 1.91%
Worst: Norfolk Southern Corporation (NSC) - down 1.21%

Don't know. Probably went up because the stock market went up.
