Good afternoon!
"Wilderness Boundary" read the US Forest Service sign as it was passed. “Wilderness is an area where the earth and its community of life are untrammeled by man, where man himself is a visitor who does not remain.” -US Congress definition in The Wilderness Act. Public Law 88-577 (16 U.S.C. 1131-1136) 88th Congress, Second Session September 3, 1964.
Left early in the morning for the fantastic scenic drive thru Franconia Notch. This is a single view from the west and this is just one view from the east
Drove to the tourist Town of Lincoln, NH and followed Rt 112, the Kancamagus (Kank-a-maw-gus) Highway, aka The Kanc, east for 5 miles. Here is the 2 giant parking lots and Ranger Station for hikers adventures to see Franconia Falls and to explore the Pemigewasset Wilderness, well over 48,000 acres (200 km 2).
12 Four Thousand Foot mountains are the Pemi Wilderness in a horseshoe arrangement. Many like to hike all of them in a 38 mile (61.2 km) 3-5 day backpack traverse. Some even run the entire loop. They are called ridge runners. Others just like a casual hike to see waterfalls and to be in the outdoors.
The hike into the edge of the wilderness is a railroad bed built in 1890 by John E Henry. He was greedy and mean. If a man fell into the river, Henry would yell to save the tools, instead of the man. This RR ran from 1892-1948.
The Pemigewasset wilderness was virtually clear cut. It then burned from sparks on the coal train engine. Thankfully it is now protected from logger's hands and has returned to a beautiful forest of hard & softwoods abundant with wildlife.
Just before the suspended bridge across the river, a marked side trail leads one north for .4 of a mile (.64 km) to the thunderous roar of the falls as seen in the Spring.
During the end of June thru the 1st day of school in Sept. Children, teens, and the brave sit in this chute and have the water thrust them into the falls. There is often 100 folks, just at the falls.
This popular hike has an easy 300' rise in elevation in 3.2 miles. The sensational round trip is 6.4 miles, about a 3 hour r.t. to help get my legs back.
Visited that town's supermarket and bought Vidalia onions for 88¢ a lb and a 22 oz strawberry rhubarb 8" pie for just $4.99. Stopped at Subway for a chicken teriyaki footlong for a mere $4. It is Customer Appreciation four day $4 footlong subs that are $7.50 or less. What a deal.
The temp is 53° partly cloudy skies with the high 68°. There is a 30% chance of rain.
Have a pleasant day!

Good afternoon!
There is still snow on our northern NH mtns. Aptly named the White Mountains.
Doggone chilly and windy in the morning. The temp was 42° with a long sleeve shirt on under a spring hiking jacket. The wind had gusts up to 16 mph. Almost glove wearing conditions. With heavy overcast, it was not a good day to drive to a mtn or a waterfall. Needed to loosen up and get my legs limbered.
Strapped on my backpack, the dog was excited, and out the door we went. My legs felt tight and heavy as were descended the mountain. At the bottom we turned right to see the two brooks flowing enjoyably in whitewater and sound. They merge on the north side of the road then join the CT River in a mile.
The steady elevation went well and it surprised me for not hiking in several days. The sugar maple leaves are nearly their normal size. The crab apple trees have pink blossoms. The cherry trees have white blossoms. These colors look fantastic against their green colored sisters.
Also white are the chokecherry trees (Prunus virginiana). They grow to 30 feet (9.14 m) high. One can eat the berries from this tree. Yet after one bite you will realize how the tree got its name. The astringent cherries work much better in jellies and pies. The 5 petal flower is pleasingly aromatic.
The cows were not seen at the giant electric fence pasture. Later the founding family's son was driving by. He was hailed and stopped to speak to me. None of them are milking cows. They are holsteins, either pregnant, or far less than 2 years old.
There is a small pond that can not be seen from the road for them to drink. They ran to me last week as they thought they were going to be feed. A fellow from a surrounding town rented the entire farm property. When winter comes the cows will be returned to their original farm.
It snowed four times during the hike. Could see snowflakes on the coat of the dog. Just one car, no jets, and birds singing their lovely songs during the snow flying around. No accumulation and no back pain. This hike is 4¼ gratifying miles with 650 appreciated feet of elevation gain.
The temp is 58° in sunny skies. The annuals have side stakes to elevate the plastic covering. Hope this is our last frost 'til Sept/Oct. May see one tonight and on Friday overnight.
Have a wonderful day!

Happy Mother's Day!
Love snowshoeing, ice skating on a pond, and x-c skiing.
Enjoyed some early morning classic TV Shows of comedy, drama, crime, and suspense. Wore my waterproof ball cap and took my recyclables to the Center. Met 2 folks known and we chatted for a while.
Headed for a Super Walmart 32 miles south of here. As the big box town was reached, a decision was made to remain at the local one. Bought a few items and 3 bags of Weed & Feed. Was surprised to see many items in the coolers empty and few people. It was before 9 AM tho.
Returned home to finish the remaining steak tips. Had them with crimini, onions and red bell peppers. Went outdoors when the rain stopped and decorated my half wine barrel with the different annuals bought the day before. Have plastic to cover the barrel in case of our last frost, forecast reads to be Monday overnight.
The black flies returned, swarm en masse, and are hungry. Only the female Black Fly bites since she requires blood for the development of her eggs. As the female bites, she injects saliva into the skin, which is highly irritating and leads to swelling and itching. Ammonia immediately applied works to neutralize the bite. More on the black flies.
One bag of Weed & Feed is good for applying to 5,000 sq feet (1,524 sq meters) of lawn. Hand spread 15,000 square feet (4572 sq meters) on part of my lawn. 1 acre is 43,560 square feet (4046.85 square meters). At $12 a bag at WM it still is expensive to complete and entire lawn.
Have 2 acres of lawn. Few dandelions or weeds, and have grass that looks like a golf course at the roadside end . If it rains often, W & F added to a lawn may need two mowings a week for a few months.
The temp is 66° in partly sunny skies.
Have a splendid day!

sometimes we go snowshoeing..it's great on a calm moonlit night. Usually travel isn't too bad here in Northern Michigan..there are times thought that it can be treacherous.. just curling up with a good book or talking to gasbuddies gets us through lots of days..

Good morning!
Feel like it is a buying disease. Stuff on sale buy, Buy, BUY! Have a whole watermelon ($4.99 ea) that won't fit into my fridge and 3 lbs of chicken breasts that need to be cooked or frozen. Boneless and skinless for $1.77 a lb. Difficult to pass up the good prices. Need to stop buying food. Like you, need to empty my freezer.
Read in the paper the new ad from the 7 store small supermarket chain that would not give me a raincheck for cantaloupes 2/$3 that was in their ad 1 week ago. Their new ad in the paper nows reads, "Prices subject to present stock. Some illustrations are for design purposes only. We reserve the right to limit quantities and correct typographical errors." So no rainchecks, bait 'em in.
Organized the house while watching rain storms and the sun come and go in the morning. Ordered the finest Philly steak and cheese in the area via telephone. Asked for onions, peppers, black olives, and mushrooms with provolone cheese to be added. Immediately drove to that restaurant and picked it up. Felt the weight to be a 1¼ lb sub. Well worth the pricey $9.30 w/tax. The finest cut of top round that was delicious with all the veggies.
Drove to the P.O. and was thankful to be in my car. The sky opened up. Passed a 70 y/o man hitchhiking south while I was heading north. He must have been soaked.
Visited our mom & pop flower farm and selected different pansies including the new dynamite blueberry thrill. It is a beautiful blend of purple, blue, yellow and white. All with happy faces.
Also bought red snapdragons, mixed portulla, violet and deep crimson verbena, blue annual lobelia, and some vinca vines to hang down the side of my half wine barrel. 6 packs are $2 and the vines are $1.50 ea. Will return for large tomato plants that are $1.50 ea. Looks to be the frost will be over after Mon & Tues low of 28° until Sept/Oct.
The temp is 68°. There is a chance of t-storms and a 90% chance of precipitation this afternoon. Lots of rain in VT state headed this way. It rained on & off since 3:45 AM.
Have a tremendous day!

Good morning all: Yes midnight it is a great price but l am full up on top sirloin right now. l just took one out of the freezer from last Dec and made swiss steaks and rice. Turned out really good. That was the one l said l paid $6.50 for but it was $6. still too much. l now get them for $4. a pound. Last week sale at Safeway. No meat buying for awhile l hope. l have to use some to make room, but like l said before , "when l take one piece out, l end up putting 3 meals back" l froze one of the swiss steak meals and ate 2. It was a very small steak sirloin. But often like for instance l take out a chicken breast and make a meal, say chicken and noodles then l have several packages to freeze or toss and l don't often toss food. My freezer keeps getting fuller, instead of emptying. Smile.

Good afternoon!
That is a fabulous price. Have little room in my freezer. Would crock it on low and it would be so tender.
Do the same in winter as in the summer. Hike. Can't ice skate or snow shoe until December.
One of those mornings that was difficult to leave the house and drive away. Headed over to US Rt2 in Jefferson. Looked at the time, it was after 11 AM. My destination was Mt Waumbek. Realized it was much too late to begin a 5 hour hike.
Turned around and heading back to town. Parked at the side of the Mt Prospect auto road. Left my backpack in the car and took a 1 liter water bottle with me. Up the paved road to the mountain top we went.
State Park workers are readying the road removing the winter cover of leaves using their 100+ mph blowers. The park front gates open on May 25 during weekends, then in June Wed thru Sunday. Each Thursday has free events during the summers.
Called the "lodge," the 2 story 30' x 70' main house, is built of fieldstone and stucco; its gable roof is covered with red terra cotta tiles. The lodge is listed in the National Register of Historic Places. There is also a field stone tower 56 feet (17m) high that one can climb up to see the spectacular views.
The estate was built at the direction of John Wingate Weeks, leading conservationist, U.S. congressman, U.S. senator, and Secretary of War under Presidents Harding and Coolidge.
Two huge balconies take full advantage of the lodge's mountain top setting, providing stunning views of the surrounding scenery. Under a sky of blue, magnificent views are seen in every direction. One sees mountains beyond mountains for a 100 miles. Mountains in 3 states and in Canada are seen.
This hike has a steady elevation gain of 650 feet in 1.6 miles. The round trip is 3.2 miles. Had a backache from the first ½ mile until the park bench was sat in. The tremendous views has a way of healing.
Rain has finally arrived. Slow and steady. The temp is 58° with the high to be 73° in mostly cloudy skies with a 60% chance of rain. Off to the market later to look for some buys.
Have a fantastic day!

I see a place that has top sirloin for $1.99 a pound. Buy the whole thing tho and cut it up yourself. That's fine if l were a restaurant. This is a cheap warehouse type of place. No fees tho but bulk and small amounts available. Looked at the ad for a store they are opening nearby May 15th. Cheap chicken too. l will stick to my sales at quality stores. l am not even happy with some foods l got at Walmart recently.

Good afternoon!
playtime, Great your wife is recovering well. Guess that your recovering as she does.
trugas, Made to Utah, Wyoming and Montana. Never made it north of San Francisco. Wanted to visit and hike the mtns in No Cal. Did go to Big Bear and that entire area. Even to Yosemite and Sequoia. Next time.
Moseyed around the gardens early in the morning, did some weed maintenance, watered all the plants and fruit bushes. My thigh and back did not bother me. When my chores were finished shorts, a hiking t-shirt (poly) and my hiking boots were changed into and down the mountain we went.
It was to be another hot day in the 80's with clear, rich blue skies, our 3rd straight week of marvelous June weather. Traveled slowly down the mountain. Was testing to feel how my left strained hip was from brushing into a partially submerged rock.
Up the first steady rise in elevation saw no problems. The brooks were flowing like streams due to nearly a month without rain. My back began to bother me near the end of that gain. Saw for the first time a concrete post sticking out of the ground, like a 50's style cement sidewalk crib.
Apparently this was the dividing boundary between the lawn of the founding family's father with lawn, and his son whose has a score of apple trees. Had to stop and look at it up close.
At the small pond there was no longer the sound of any peepers. Several to many fresh deer tracks were in road. Research finds a whitetail deer requires approximately 1 1/2 quarts for every 100 pounds of body weight per day during the winter. This requirement doubles during the summer, with deer needing about 3 quarts for every 100 pounds of body weight.
Forgot about the brand new electric fence 1000 ft below the 4 story farmhouse. When it was reached that unmistakable smell of cows greeted me. Just past a few trees at the side of the road was the 30-50 acre open hay field.
In the distance it seemed 20 Jersey cows were watching us pass by. Near the giant farmhouse a stop was made. Soon all but 2-3 cows raced towards me. Like it could be a stampede! Wondered if the e-fence was going to contain them. Most were well over 6' tall and bodies the size of two bathtubs!
They did stop. When my dog was thru exploring the giant barn she returned to the road. 36 full size cows were counted. Many had their horns trimmed. We just looked at each other for minutes. And then they mooed.
Just a week ago the e-fence was put up and today was the first time seeing the cows. Someone has to lead them into the barn to be milked twice a day and give them water. Like this pleasant kind of mystery.
Other than the cows, a day of pure silence, with passenger jets seen with their contrails far to the south of here. No people or vehicles drove by. This hike is a fulfilling 4¼ miles with a respectable 650 foot of elevation gain.
After a lunch of crock potted mixed veggies and a side of a pork chop, heat and PT exercise was done. My back is fine as this is typed. Am considering phoning the Chiro for more appointments. Great that my hip is not hurting. No big plans, just yet.
The temp 79° in most sunny skies.
Have a fabulous day!

Playtime: Glad the wife is doing as well as l expected she would. That surgery is the only one l had no difficulty with. Not a fan of any surgery. Good she lost all the weight beforehand too. Midnight: Those pics remind me of everywhere north of me. The trees are different because ours are mostly evergreen. The hills between Fort Bragg and Willits are just like those. Go on "forever" l took a pic once of them because of that feature. l started across one of those bridges and chickened out near Vancouver. l just love going north in CA Or and further. l do not like going south at all. Hot and sandy and scrub brush. other than farmland. Guess l will continue to stay home with gas prices shooting up again. l too got some nice pork chops at a low price. l also got more top sirloin and had them grind it into hamburger. l am thawing a previous sirloin right now to make swiss steak. This time l think l will go with tomatoes, l usually prefer beef stock brown sauce. l was re organizing my meats and pulling older forward and decided to use the older top sirloin which l paid much more for by $2 a pound or more even. l think it said $6.50 A POUND

Good afternoon!
playtime, What a super assortment of veggies.
trugas, Will go out to visit and see if there is any growth on the 3 clematis. Not expecting much for another few weeks. Tho the sun is extra warm this early May.
Drove south on I 93 thru Franconia Notch (The Notch) to the Town of Lincoln. Stopped at the US Forest Service Visitor's Center to buy an annual Parking permit that is required at many trailheads to park. The $20 annual fee pays for trail & bridge crossing maintenance and the cost of plowing in the winter.
Took the Kancamagus "Kank-ah-mah-gus" Highway Rt 112 West to Lincoln Woods. This is the twin parking area for those exploring the Pemigewasset Wilderness. From 1893 to 1948, 50 miles of railroad tracks, at times 100 loggers chopped trees while horses hauled them to log landings beside the RR tracks.
The Kancamagus Highway, 26.5 mile (42.6 km) in length with no amenities until each end is reached is made to keep the natural feel of the wilderness. It is often referred to as the best fall foliage trip in the U.S, is rich in history that dates back to the Indian Tribes of the 1600's. Kancamagus, "The Fearless One" was the grandson of Passaconaway.
Passaconaway "Child of the Bear" was Kancamagus's grandfather. Passaconaway passed along his offers of peace to other tribes and united over 17 Indian tribes within central New England in 1627. This unification formed the later known Panacook Confederacy.
The Town of Penacook NH got its name from the Panacook Indians. Here is a link to several views from the Kancamagus Highway including stunning sunsets, moose prints, and viewer shared photos.
Crossed the 160 foot long suspension bridge spanning the mighty East Branch of the Pemigewasset River. Almost immediately after beginning the LinWood Trail a protruding rock on the trail was tripped onto and my left hip strained a muscle in my hip.
Two ol*er fellows with huge overnight backpacks were returning from their two day glorious 24 mile round trip backpack to the 3 Bond Mtns in the middle of the Pemigewasset Wilderness. They spoke of the excellent weather and magnificent views.
Reached less than a mile and my back began to ache badly. Sat for awhile listening to the roar of the river, watching massive amounts of water pouring across shed sized boulders, the white foam and swirling water. Tried to use the backpackers inspiration to continue. Continued on until my back and hip had enough.
On the slow, almost limping return trip, a score of folks in different groups, many with dogs and children were headed to the beautiful Franconia Falls, which began as my destination. A return is most definitely planned.
At the suspension bridge, there were spectators watching 4 canoes and 8 kayaks, loaded with gear, practice maneuvers around giant boulders in the water. In the parking lots was a black truck with oddly yellow diagonal dashes outlining the profile of the vehicle. A professionally painted sign read "Zombie Outbreak Response Team."
An hours drive each way to hike only a total of 2 miles on a former RR track bed. Shopped in that town's supermarket to find wonderful assorted pork chops marked down to $2.35 for 2 pounds and spiral ham, good for this entire month at 99¢ A 9 pounder, the smallest one of four was purchased. At another supermarket a whole watermelon was bought for $4.99. It was the last day of that sale.
The temp is 78°. Loving every minute of it.
Have a pleasant day!

Carrots, broccoli, cabbage, lettuce, cucumbers, cauliflower, corn, tomatoes, banana peppers, jalepenos, bell peppers, onions, watermelon, raspberries, strawberries.
Grapes, Blueberries, black berries, and a few fruit trees we planted a few years ago.
We may plant some herbs yet too.

Playtime: How is the garden doing ? Any babies peeping thru yet? what all did you plant? l love the garden when the bugs leave it alone. The plan of refinancing will make your dream to have it paid for and going on trips further away. But one has to do what one must do to get by in this ole world. HEy Midnight: Enjoy seeing your posts around the sites l visit. Glad you are back in "fighting shape". You live a great lifestyle and l know you appreciate it. How is your clematis? Mine is finished the first spectacular bloom and is now budding and blooming here and there. Sure glad l got that plant.

Good afternoon!
Pay less for everything and have a blast.
A warm, sunny, clear day was seen in the making so a decision was made to stay locally. Changed into my hiking shorts and t-shirt (all are polyester), tied up my hiking boots, filled up the Nalgene liter water bottle and hit the road.
At my neighbor to the north's 10 acre hayfield the grass was as green as Ireland and growing to beat the band. It is fertilized maintained and cut by the largest farm in NH, Forbes Farm. All their fields are emerald green, other fields still have a hay color to them.
The brooks were heard 200' away. Nice pleasant sound as the stereo sound of the brook on one side of the road merges with the larger of the two. The first elevation was a bit of a huff & puff, as it was to the dog.
Some spring peepers were calling out at the mall pond. The sound and amount of them has decreased significantly. Up at the slope to the 4 story farmhouse a nearly ¼ mile electric fence has been installed since my last time by.
The metal rods were pounded in 10' apart, the yellow insulators added then the heavy gauge wire about 3' from the ground. Lots of deer, moose, and bears will be in for a terrible surprise. Looks to be a fence for livestock. No one lives at the farmhouse or has for 15 years.
Between the farmhouse and the red brick house is a 10 year home on a former hayfield. A company had dug up their S shaped driveway a few inches deep and replaced the original gravel with manufactured crushed stone. It is neatly done, looks superb, and packs hard.
All the loop road was graded and smooth from the roller as glass. Nice to see it completed. Added some juice to my pace at the last steady uphill. Took it like a champ and was happy. Left in 56° temp and returned to a most pleasing 62°. This pleasant loop hike sees a 650 foot rise in elevation and is 4¼ miles back to my home.
Just rec'd a reply from my email yesterday to the Supermarket's President, a women. The Corp is a heating oil based company in VT and own 7 convenience stores and 7 supermarkets in NY, VT and NH. Did not expect a reply:
"It appears that there was an oversight in the printing of our ad; it should have included wording whereby the items are limited in quantity/while supplies last. This is common practice and is normal in the grocery industry.
It also appears that against company policy/procedure, our previous manager was allowing for rain checks.
I apologize for any inconvenience and appreciate your business."
At least she was nice enough to reply within 24 hours. Also replied that it was pleasant of her to write, explain the situation nicely, and her time to write was appreciated. Nice of me to point out the lack of "quantities are limited and no rain checks provided" are missing from their ads. Hoped she would give me the cantaloupes 2/$3 for my trouble, if not for free. <wink>
The temp is 80° in clear skies. Off to the flower farm. The first day it's open this year.
Have a splendid day!

Not a problem. I didn't mean to make it sound like I took it wrong. I only meant to answer your question. It is quite good news being that I haven't had a raise in several years and in fact took a pay cut a few years ago.
Actually I'll probably have all the problems fixed on the car and then give it to one of the wife's kids. there are a couple of them that could use a car.
Today went quite smooth. Everyone got us in right away to the point that we were 2 to 3 hours early for the last appointment, so they did there best & got us in & out early. I hope things go this well on Monday. As for now, were one day closer to everything smoothing out again.

Playtime: sorry to make you feel defensive. lt is just the phraseology made it sound like you HAD to refinance, not that you wanted to to save money. Sounds like you had it worked out. Good thing I guess that your wife's kids are there to help her out in recovery. Right? Good luck on your plans and how nice to have a new car. 1997 IS getting old. Tho my chev lasted 16 or more years. Sure l had a new transmission put in and painted, but the rest was minor maintenace. Great car, wish l still had it. Hatch back. l hauled everything in it.

Good afternoon!
Now it is completely understood. Forgot about the lower loan rates. Sure would be fantastic to save $300 a month and pay off a new car loan. Will drink to that.
Sad that parking is so expensive in the city. Hope the two pre-surgery visits go well and your overnight recovery on your op is smooth and painless to you. Best of wishes.
Cattails are great in a salad. How to eat cattails.
Visited my friend the meat mgr just after his store opened. Wanted to buy cantaloupes on sale for 2/$3. They were out of stock so a rain checked was asked. Was told by the cashier, then the new store mgr that they no longer give rainchecks. They said they would have them in stock later as the truck is unloading them and to come back. Come back? C'mon now.
My friend heard that as he and another meat cutter had just slid a display rack near the office window. Two customers also heard this. The ads did not say quantities are limited or no rain checks. E-mailed the newspaper that their ads are published in and sent a note to the Resource Mgr of the Corp. Interesting to see if they reply.
Drove to the market and bought some very long and solid Cuban sweet red peppers for $1.75 a lb, better than excellent green grapes for $1.75 a lb (Was converted from red, they were That Good. The Sweetest ever!), cucumbers are 4 for $1 (must be a mistake.
2 lbs of yellow onions cost .95¢, a 1¼ lb basket of green bean cost $1.85, green leaf lettuce (huge) was $1.50, Minneolas are 3/$2, pears $1.50 a lb and fresh cut broccoli crowns (pure white at the cut) is $1.25 a lb.
Have leftover produce from last week. Even my Driscoll's strawberries are in the fridge looking great, which were up to $2 a lb this week. Another supermarket has them on sale for $1.49 along with whole watermelons $4.99 ea and boneless & skinless chicken breasts for $1.77 a lb.
Stapled the netting on the 2x4's of the garden's new wooden frame. For doing it all alone, it was wonderfully straight, nice and tight. Had 10-12 hornets that took turn buzzing my face at different times. Looks like they are searching for places to built their paper nests. No stings, yet there were concerns at times. Looking forward to growing a summer's crop of strawberries.
The temp is 35° with the high to be 72° in clear skies.
Have a delightful day!

Why refinance my house? To cut my interest rate nearly in half. and save $300 a month on the payments. Those $300 could be a new car!
My old car is just driving me crazy. I'd rather have a car payment and be able to trust it will get me around without breaking down yearly. My 97 Escort has 224,000 miles on it and needs something fixed every 6 to 12 months. A guy at work usually fixes it for me and saves me a lot of money, but its a pain when its out of commission. Right now it needs the brake fluid leak fixed, the E brake cable replaced, a strange rattly, squeak fixed and some front end work done.
We have two days worth of pre-surgery doc appointments. so there is 35 bucks per day plus parking easy. I know it can be done laparoscopicaly, but every now and then for whatever reason they just have to make more or larger incisions. Then its an over night, and the wife off work a couple weeks. We do have a great doc at a highly, nationally ranked hospital. But its still surgery.
We just have a lot going on here and its stressing us out a tad. I'm sure we'll get through it just fine. Its just a matter of close time & money management. for the next couple weeks.

Good afternoon!
No mortgage and it feels fabulous to just pay expenses.
Left the house by 9:30 AM wearing shorts, a t-shirt, and carrying a liter of water. At the bottom of the mtn a right was made to ascend past the confluence of the two brooks. Lots of moss is present on the banks and algae from years past on many of the boulders.
On the left was the town grader leveling the ruts and tire tracks in the gravel road. It was a challenge gaining the steady rise in elevation. At the sugar maples lining the both sides of road, the dog returned from being far ahead to see if this writer was on the way.
At the small pond the spring peeper calls were far less than last week. Though some shore ice was seen, it may have been the way the cattail shoots looked in the water. A stand of cattails is as close as you wíll get to finding a nature's wild supermarket.
It was a major staple for the American Indians, who found it in such great supply, they didn't need to cultivate it. The settlers missed out when they ignored this great food and destroyed its habitats, instead of cultivating it.
They're like a combination of tender zucchini and cucumbers, adding a refreshing texture and flavor to salads. Add them to soup towards the end of cooking. They're superb in stir-fry dishes, more than suitable for sandwiches, and excellent in virtually any context. Sliced cattail hearts are excellent sauteed in evoo or sesame oil, with wild carrots and ginger.
The native Indians also used cattails medicinally. They applied the jelly from between the young leaves to wounds, sores, carbuncles, external inflammations, and boils, to soothe pain.
Cattail leaves can be used to make children's dolls, thatch roofs, weave beautiful baskets, as seating for the backs of chairs, and to make mats. Archaeologists have excavated cattail mats over 10,000 years old from a Nevada cave.
Cattails and their associated microorganisms improve water and soil quality. They render organic pollution harmless, and fix atmospheric nitrogen, bringing it back into the food chain. They've even been planted along the Nile river to reduce soil salinity.
Lots of birds sang their beautiful songs, lots of butterflies fluttered across the road, the colors of the buds were beautiful. Green buds, orange-brown, yellow, white, and pink are seen. The side of the mountains radiate with the tremendous colors of the buds beginning to open.
At the ⅔ mile mark it was wished home was reached. My back was killing me and fatigue was setting in. The final elevation gain was felt. At the custom log cabin the town grader was leveling the road. Waved at the driver and he returned the wave. Great to be able to drive on a smooth pothole-free gravel road.
This mountain road loop hike is 4¼ miles with a noticeable elevation gain of 650 feet. At home a two hour nap was taken. My back felt better after the rest. Could feel both feet tingle during mid afternoon.
Had a pleasant lunch of veges and a side dish of the recently cooked crock pot chicken. The temp hit 82° in clear skies late afternoon. Spring has arrived in the mountains.
Have a fantastic day!

Good afternoon!
Sad that your wife need an op. Best wishes. Heck with refinancing and having monthly payments.
Watched some early morning Netflix movies to relax after my rounds & give the air a chance to warm up. Went into my downstairs closet to get one of 3 staple guns owned. One is a hammer tacker, one for round wire installation, and the still ever popular, T-50 Arrow flat wire staple gun.
The closet was a disaster. 90 minutes were spent Spring cleaning and recycling now unneeded items in boxes for Saturday's visit to the Recycling Center. It's open all Tuesday afternoon. Didn't want to make a special trip.
Got the staple gun, tie wire, and a special set of side cutting pliers to use on the tie wire. Had a 150 foot role of 1"x 1" hex mesh (chicken wire) on hand from years ago.
Brought the wire roll and began to spread the 100 ft length. Found out that working from the halfway post and working towards each each resulted in a nice looking tightly pull fence w/o waves.
Stapled the top edge to the new roof frame and twisted the tie wire around the bottom edge to tighten the wires so nothing could squeeze between the overlap. Have three of the sides done.
Will finish the front with a wire door and add the netting when more staples are bought in town on Thursday. Great to be in just shorts and feel the temps in the low 70's. Great to have few clouds and perfect sun tan weather also.
The temp was 34° early morn. The high is 82° in sunny skies. Looks like a perfect day for shorts, a t-shirt, and a hike on the loop road.
Have a fabulous day!

Playtime why refinance your house? Car repairs arent that bad are they? And your insurance should cover the surgery. l had my gall bladder removed lapriscopically and was out of hospital the same day. Took care of myself (then l had no housekeeper.)Try not to worry. It sounds worse than it is.

Great. The wife needs her gall bladder out and the car broke down. On the positive side, all I need is $400 and I can refinance the house.

Good afternoon buddies!
Go hiking in the snow covered mountains, of course!
It was 26° in the valleys and on the summit of the northeast's big rockpile, 6,288' Mt Washington. Saw on Netflix the first pilot of Columbo from back in '71 to give the morn temp a chance to rise.
Drove to Franconia Notch in the heart of ten four thousand footers. One can see them from at least 30 miles away. The mountains have snow remaining. Parked at Lafayette Place Campground. Was amazed to see a few folks tent camping.
Met two young families that were returning from their night/weekend at the Appalachian Mountain Clubs' Lonesome Lake Hut. There are 8 huts in NH about a 1 day journey apart on the Appalachian Trail.
Only 3 huts remain open during the winter on a self serve basis. You cook your own food and it costs $30 per night off season. From June to October all the huts are open full service. Dinner and breakfast and a bunk bed with a mattress is provided in the $120 a night range.
Halfway up there was solid ice on the trail. My Magic Spikes were perfect for this sustained elevation gain of 1000 feet in a mile. Two separate young female hikers needed to turn around since they had no traction devices.
The second woman wore these crazy Five Finger Shoes on the trail that had ice and up to 18 inches of deep slushy snow. We exchanged trail talk. She did admit that she was foolish wearing them.
Needed to sit an rest about half way up. Was just thinking how much out of shape that needed a rest. Then just behind me a very fit 26 y/o guy had stopped to rest also. We trail talked also.
Before reaching the hut, one sees a beautiful mountain tarn (lake) and magnificent views to the west of the spectacular Franconia Ridge. Five 4000 footers are seen in the background just a mile away. An awesome sight in any season.
The spikes worked perfectly on the descent. The temps, now touching 60°+ turn snow into slush and the ice was softened to an inch deep. No slips and excellent traction. Mentioned to many w/o traction on their ascent that this traction device was a mere $15, including pstg and the carrying bag.
Only one couple had the $60 version. The fellow wanted to see the bottoms of mine to compare to his. A fine looking 200+ year old maple 32-36 inches wide tree was growing on a glacial erratic. Its limbs wonderfully grown around the boulder into the side of the mountain.
The descent went well and it was a good feeling to see views and get outdoors for 2½ hours. This hike is 3.2 miles round trip. There is an amazing 1000 feet of elevation gain in less than a mile.
Stopped at Home Depot for a 2"x4"x10'. They sold them for $4.24. Had my Lowe's receipt in my checkbook from the other day. HD matched Lowe's $3.96 ea price and give me an additional 10% off. Final cost was $3.56.
The temp is 34°F with the high to be 64° in mostly sunny skies. My feet ache lightly from yesterday's hike. Calf's are a bit tight. My back feels great. Slept like a log.
Plan to complete the fence, roof netting, and rap up the project if possible today. Things always seem to take longer than planned. Will see if my pal has any deals at his supermarket.
Have a pleasant day!

My first crock pot had a 1 piece design. Wasn't much fun. Great to put the ceramic and contents into the fridge.

Midnight: how do you get lasagne out of a deep crock pot without it all falling apart? l have a hard enough time with it baked in a shallow pan. Unless it is cold. Yes l do remember you mentioning that you make it in your crock pot. l love my crock pot now but l remember giving at least two away back in the beginning. Too hard to clean. Heavy and bowl didn't come out in the early days. Now it's a breeze and l have just the right size. Smile.

Good afternoon!
Have met those type of compulsive winners. Not fun, a major task. Listening to Neil Diamond sing live "Sweet Caroline" at Boston's Fenway Park. The crowd is going wild with joy.
It was a beautiful sunny day that just perfect for shorts, a t-shirt, and a hike. The temp was 64° when my backpack was strapped on. The skies had barely a cloud, It was 10:45AM.
The dog ran ahead and explored my neighbor's property. Wonder if small animals live near his home. The dog finds much interest. At the two brooks the sound of water could be heard 200 feet away. Stopped to view each and listen before continuing on.
Was happy heading up the first elevation gain, the pace went well. All the sap taps and lines to the sugar maple trees. Looked at the buds on the trees and the buds are alizarin crimson and are beginning to open. The sap will quickly become sour now. No sap was dripping out of the tap holes.
It was completely quiet except for a few songbirds that have returned, several caterpillars were on the road, and many fresh deer footprints were seen. The aged prints are driven over by local cars.
My neighbors to the south were up for the w/e raking leaves and getting their lawn ready for the growing season. Their Invisible Fence kept their active young dog from leaving their yard, yet he barked eagerly at my dog. That caused my dog to want to return her bark. She was prevented with commands.
Felt so much better than after Tuesdays' hike. A fabulous feeling that proves there is a light at the end of the tunnel. This hike is a flowing 4¼ miles with a ardent elevation gain of 650 feet. Have been watching the live coverage of CBS News of the Boston manhunt. Wonderful the suspect was apprehended. There are armoured personnel carriers in that neighborhood. A very surreal scene. Take a look at the link.
Woke up to the power being off. Looks to be all set for now. The temp is 42° with the high to be 52°. There is 30% chance of rain. It is raining.
Have a tremendous day!

We have property tax here too, but that is usually tied into our house payment. I know when I was in California the auto license plates were quite expensive. There only like $50 here, maybe thats the difference between California & Ohio. All I know is I don't like city taxes.

Good afternoon!
The search engines do not have that name. Would spend an extra $20 for a real juicy rum cake.
My original recipe for white Tuscan sauce. It goes fabulous with everything, even eggs and toast. Crock pot on high 3 stalks of celery, 8 garlic cloves, one whole cooked carrot, half a sweet onion, optional is a small amount of spare ribs say ¼ lb cooked.
Flour is added to the simmering water to make a light paste. You will know when to stop. Kosher salt and black pepper are added to taste. All is mashed up, a tiny bit of extra water may be needed during this mashing process.
*Optional* are parsley, oregano, rosemary, & basil flakes for added spice, a half cup of cream, cooked mushroom minced, and tomato sauce.
This is a fabulous tasting white sauce as it is used for gravy on meats, veggies, potatoes, pasta, and etc.
It thickens well in the fridge and may need a small of water to thin it on subsequent days. This is my version and recipe for Tuscan sauce.

Good afternoon!
Not sure what the "Greatest Cake" is? The recipe is not on the first page of the search engines. Any link, or ?
Have had homemade fruitcake that was nice and moist. Never have made any cakes. Avoiding sugar. Making certain to avoid diabetes.
My fave cake is rum cake. Love that incredibly moist flavor. Though a coconut and German chocolate is fine with me. <wink>
Visited the Town Tax Collector as soon as she opened the door. Had my annual Town Inventory of Taxable Property to complete and hand delivery before April 15. The tax collector is open during the day just on Saturdays. Otherwise she is only open 7-9 PM two nights a week.
Am fast asleep far before 7 PM each night. To set your evaluation the town tax appraiser wants to know whether one has bought or sold land in town and if there are any changes to any buildings on one's property(s).
A stamped receipt at the top of the form is given to the property owner with the collectors signature for proof of return. This form gives the town Assessor an understanding of your new property appraisal. Drove to the Recycle Center to do my share of glass, plastic, paper, and tin cans. Had two aluminium cans that were picked up from someone's toss out their window.
Noticed the rain & sleet combo. The roads were white, unplowed, and unsanded. Returned home and emptied the contents od the crock pot into a 2 quart glass bowl w/airtight lib. After washing it, evoo, 8 ounces of water, 8 cloves of garlic, 3 celery stalks, 4 giant carrots, a couple of thick slices of sweet onion, and 2 lbs of southern spare ribs, all fat removed and slow cooked.
Star Trek, 24, Lost Girl, and several other shows were seen until the celery was soft enough to mash up, about four hours later. Flour was added to the simmering water to make a light paste. The garlic cloves, one whole cooked carrot, the sweet onion, and a small amount of the spare ribs were mashed well into a thin paste. Kosher salt and black pepper were added to taste. Optional are parsley, oregano, rosemary, & basil flakes for added spice taste, a half cup of cream, cooked mushrooms minced, and tomato sauce.
This is a fabulous tasting white sauce as it is used for gravy on meats, veggies, potatoes, and pasta. It thickens well in the fridge and may need a small amount of water to thin it on subsequent days. It is my version and recipe for Tuscan sauce.
The temp is 45°, with a 50% chance of rain. It is sunny, overcast and periods of rain, heavy at times.
Have a splendid day!
