Even threads l read that supposedly have nothing to do with politics, come up with political comments, then responses from the other side attacking their beliefs .. no one's ideas or beliefs are going to change from this type of thing that l can see. So why attack? Why not just move on?

@ BayleeBuggy,

It is outlined in the general forum guidelines that we prefer users not to bump old, inactive threads, and that if a topic has been inactive for two months or more, not to post in it.

Most forums have an anti-bumping rule to avoid the re-hashing of old topics or burying new content with old content. It's really not intended to be an insult to the user base memory, so please do not imply this.

---

To the OP, long before we diversified the forums, most political discussion was discouraged and was considered off-topic in most cases. We have seen an increased volume of unrelated political responses, and it can be quite annoying for most. I would recommend using the Ignore Member feature to hide members from you who post those kinds of responses frequently (as you have already indicated you'd been doing).

I didn't like EITHER Obummer or Rmoney. I considered the Libertarian candidate as an alternative, but I didn't like him either. Guess I'm going to have to write in myself in 2016.

I think bringing back old topics is a good thing. I don't think Obama was the best man, but I respect your right to choose. I think that within 10 years or so, the BIG crash will happen, and then those who feel we needed to "protect" government programs will wonder why the politicians didn't fix what needed to be fixed. The fiscal cliff is coming....no avoiding it.

I'm glad that you reopened this topic, since I had missed the latest responses. But don't be surprised if it gets locked as a result of your having posted again. Apparently GB members are not supposed to have an attention span long enough to absorb information after two months.

A lot of people behave differently online and in person, especially when communicating. Attacking others online allows for them to dig their head into the sand--they can unload a bunch of fallacious ideas without having to face the reality of getting socked in the face because they offended someone. It allows for people to complain for the sake of complaining because no one in real life wants to listen to them. It allows for them to get the attention they don't get in real life. It allows for them to be immature because they have no obligations to anyone through the internet, but they need to carry themselves professionally at work and "grown up" at home in front of their families. It allows people to show how insecure, immature, and how pathetic someone really is deep inside.

The reality is that 97% of people pass judgment based on emotional appeal. I can also assure you that these 97% also have no idea what they're talking about and are simply trolls when they comment with something like "Blame Obama" or "NoBama" when gas prices are rising--because if they ever paid attention to their high school U.S. Government class, they would know that a lot of the stupid sh1t they complain about has nothing to do with the president or whoever the hell they're complaining about. Most people really lack sufficient knowledge in American politics (and often interchange it with economics), but the Internet allows them to cheat themselves into thinking they know everything.

That's my two cents.

Here is my 2 cents...

- I am a long time GB.
- I have my beliefs, views and opinions, right or wrong they are mine.
- I respect that others have their beliefs, views, and opinions, right or wrong, they are theirs.
- Even if I don't agree with them they are entitled to have them.
- I am so thankful that I live in a country where I can freely voice my views and opinions.
- Yes sometimes people will question and at times attack them, I do love a good debate.

What people tend to forget during these exchanges is that they should present the facts and keep their emotions in check.

People also at time think that their beliefs, views or opinions are right that they feel the need to attack anyone who speaks against their views, opinions or beliefs.

It would be nice to be able to have a respectful conversation about differences rather than defending personal attacks.

I am not looking forward to this election, it is going to get dirty and nasty. I only hope that our leaders can remember that they are public servants voted in by We the People and represent our country.

Thanks l try my best. l don't "get" being mean for pleasure, but know some people like that. Life is too short and l want to be happy for what is left of it. Just wish l'd learned that sooner. But l can go one day at a time and l DO literally stop and smell the roses. Hope it's a good day for you Rehorsehay and everyone.

I only have 1 or 2 who are current members still on my list, but it certainly helps my blood pressure! It was pretty wild and wooly around here before that was introduced, and some good people were driven off the site as a result.

My ignore list is longer now than my buddy list. Course l usually don't ask to be buddies..only once. l do put people on the ignore list and usually it is for personal attacking rather that expressing an opinion.

I'm sorry to hear about your real-life problems - at least it's much easier to deal with cyber-idiots than the ones who live next door. (And I've had too much experiece of the real-life neighbours myself!)

But I really meant it about the former members of GB being much tougher than the current members. So the mods have managed to instill a bit more civility than was here in the past. I've also noticed that a lot of news sites that have comment sections for news items each have a dedicated batch of posters who argue their own points over and over. Frequently their points have very little to do with the current news!

l continually am amazed by people. Latest shock was the thefts here is seniorland. We have our nasty group of troublemakers here too. Everyone knows who they are and within 4 months of moving here (next door to one of the worst) l found out too. l moved. Happy now and blocking l guess is what will work for me here, but l also like to hear other opinions, just not the spitefullness. l agree there ARE two sides to every story and l like to engage in normal discussions.

Two sides to every story, Nasty attacks are distasteful and don't solve any thing. Concentrate on solutions, not problems.

I think people are regressing to the barbaric. All sense of being civilized is getting lost. Rude, mean and nasty is the new in.

It is really sad, it is whats tearing the world apart. Us verses them, You verses me. I don't have a answer for it, except to to treat others as I would like to be treated.

I really hope you all have a great day!

I have to agree with you. I see it on a daily basis and it is not just politics. People being mean and nasty. I am from California I see negative remarks all the time. Most of the time I ignore them. It sure gets old. We wonder where all the bulling kids come from, because there are a lot of adults that haven't grown up! I came on gas buddies to see the gas prices and I like getting information about energy. I am trying to not let the few negatives ruin it.

Yes, politcal rhetoric is getting very nasty, especially in the States. But even in Canada the Tories are importing the dirty tricks, so we are not immune anywhere.

Note that no one has stepped in to defend the practice.

Another way of defusing situations is that the mods sometimes fix things so that two feuding GBs can't see each other's postings. That isn't necessarily because of politics, but they are the most common cause - or at least the two members at odds generally have opposite political views.

Very sadly there is too much of us against them. When it gets personal the mods will step in and send both parties to neutral corners. When it gets out of hand posters are suspended.

It's a nasty habit, and believe it or not, much better than it used to be. The separation of the political fora and ability to flag the worst offenders have made a welcome improvement.

But just wait until the next US election - you ain't seen nothin' yet!
