NOT a cell phone
NOT an internet phone

A landline is a phone line you get from a telephone company. It requires outside and inside wiring.

I actually had my land line disconnected in Oct. It had been used by my family since 1956. I gave at&t a piece of my mind, telling them that they didn't pay attention to their most loyal customers.

Apparently someone listened to my rant. A month later, at&t called and offered me my landline back, for nothing if I signed up for their DSL for a 6-month promotional fee. The 6-month promo has expired; but I was able to renew the pricing for an additional year.

I told 'em I'd keep it under the current plan; as soon as that rate expires I will be gone again.

I find it much easier to understand what people are saying on a landline. My cell phone remains in the car most of the time.

If someone wants to talk to me, they had better call my land line....

Yes, for sure. But a friend who has a home-based business says he will probably get rid of his fax line. That will still leave him with two phone lines, though.

My telecommunications services have had quite a change over the years.

When I first came to Houston in August 1994, all I had was plain old telephone service (POTS).

In November 2005, a few days after I signed up with GasBuddy, I got DSL. That was a major improvement. I was in the hospital when UPS delivered my DSL box, and it was waiting for me to get it at the apartment office. I got home from the hospital, installed the DSL and went through my full mailbox, and only then went to get my prescriptions filled. I was able to go get the pills after the rush hour had finished, and I didn't need the pills until bedtime anyway. Then, I went out and had something to eat.

In November 2009, I had to move into a new apartment after the ceiling collapsed in the kitchen. The cable wasn't very good in that area of town, so I went with AT&T U-verse. The POTS line changed over to Voice Over Internet Protocol (VOIP) service.

In October 2012, I moved into a third apartment, this time to get two bedrooms (when I get done unpacking... at the rate I'm going it may be about the time Obummer leaves the White House, the second bedroom will be a computer room). The new apartment was in an area where Comcast provided cable service, and I could get much faster Internet access for the price. So, the VOIP line was changed over to Comcast. I decided to get Verizon "Share Everything" which was only about $10 more than the family plan with 2000 minutes I had before. The shared data, IMHO, is the best deal.

Sometime soon after, I got tired of having to get up and go across the room to get the VOIP phone. I considered a cordless phone, but I decided I already had a cordless phone in the form of my cell phone.

So, I currently have a VOIP phone that can be used for outgoing calls, all the ingoing calls get routed to my cell phone. I could port the VOIP phone number to my cell phone, but if you have a VOIP phone you have Enhanced 911 Service.

With most phone companies, you can cancel the POTS and keep the DSL. They typically charge a bit more because you're no longer bundling POTS and DSL.

Still have my Ooma. I have it multi-ring to my cell phone, so if I'm on the road I can still pick up my home phone calls (if I feel like it).
