That's what Mom said when I wanted to get a pair of canvas Converse Chuck Taylor All-Star unbleached white high-tops in the eighth grade. Well, all my buddies but Randy had a pair. And Randy never liked high-tops in the first place, but his kid brother Ronnie sure did (participating in a sport where high-tops are more prevalent than even basketball, namely wrestling). That was my mothers' response when I bought a pair of red low-top Chucks to wear to school. She said that in 1972, where Chucks (Converse Chuck Taylor All-Star sneakers, to the uninitiated) were just about as desirable as Air Jordans are now. I first wanted a pair of them in the eighth grade, but Mom wouldn't buy them for me. But i kept on wishing I could get a pair. Mom said "you don't wear out the bottoms of your shoes the way it is, why should I get you a pair with really good bottoms?" I first started out hankering for white high-tops, but my desire changed to red low-tops as the basketball team changed their shoes. I wasn't a jock, but I wanted to look like one. My chance came at Christmas time when I was five months short of 18 years old and Mom thought I was mature enough to go to the mall and shop without her tagging along. I went to J. C. Penney and found a huge display of Chucks of various colors. I found the red low-tops in my size and left a happy camper. When I wore them to school, they definitely got the attention. I got asked many times whether I was going out for the basketball team. I laughed at that, saying I was so uncoordinated I couldn't move and dribble at the same time. And Mom didn't need to fear about me wearing out the bottoms of the Chucks. They went off to me to the University of Missouri and I wore them out walking back and forth to class. I also wore out several of their replacements. One pair of Nikes, not particularly suited for walking on concrete but they were an beautiful bright blue, only lasted me through the eight weeks of summer school.
