I mean, even if a certain pit bull is generally docile, could he turn, and turn hard on humans or other animals? The city pound has a bunch of pits (or pit mixes) and their jaws are massive. Then, I read articles about pit attacks, and a typical response from the owners is, "Brutus is such a lovable dog, I can't believe he did this."

I think that if a pit bull is raised right with love and gentle treatment, it should be just fine. Mistreatment and the brutal training some of this breed goes through would make any dog mean!

I believe Pit Bulls are going to act according to how their owner raises them. Yes they are animals, however, I feel for the most part they can be really great dogs. My cousin has one and he's the most gentle dog I know; He is also very protective of his children. He has a 2 year old and a 6 year old and they are rough with him but he has never biten anyone. He's a great dog.

Baylee That Depends on the owner but when someone buys a dog they forget about the responsibility the comes into taking care of the dog.....sometimes people do not look into the breed they buy or rescue.Did you know that Chihuahuas are one of the most abandoned dogs because they are misrepented as cuddly. Although some are just cuddly but like Pits they need attention like any other dog ....walk ,playtime & chew treats & etc.

Hellrazor, your list is interesting, but limited in its applications. I have been bitten by several different breeds of dogs, but never a pit bull. Yes, Jack Russel can nip, but can't kill other dogs or maim children as pit bulls can and do. I agree totally that pit bulls would be closer to being reliable with responsible owners, but of course there are lots of irresponsible owners around - those who have illicit pit bulls already are much less likely to train their dogs properly, right?

BayleeBuggy<<do you really think the law for millions of people should be changed for just one foreigner? >>
No,dont don't change it cuz of one foreigner ....but I do think the Pit Bull is a misunderstood dog...
In truth, most pit bulls aren't really as aggressive as they're made out to be. They tend to be loving, gentle and playful. But there are some that have been raised and trained to be highly aggressive. Such pit bulls tend to be more aggressive toward other animals than people. Aggressive pit bulls often have a history of being abused or neglected, and getting trained specifically to fight. Pit bulls that have been mistreated are seen as being extremely dangerous, so avoid them. If you own one, treat it gently and lovingly.

Whether you've got a puppy or a full-grown dog, what's important is that you give it the attention and care it deserves. Recognizing and heeding the warning signs of potential dog aggression problems will make it easier to deal with them at an early stage. When in doubt about something dog-related, consult with a qualified veterinarian and/or animal behaviorist

Here's a look at the various dog breeds that are considered potentially aggressive.
Chow Chows are one-person dogs that tend to bite without any warning. They are also a bit ferocious around strangers, and can be quite a tenacious fighter. So make sure to discipline this dog and set right from wrong, immediately.
The Papillon is fiercely loyal of their owners - to a fault. They can be quite possessive and standoffish to strangers.
Old English Sheepdogs are very protective of their owners so they might be aggressive if anybody tends to be too close to its owners.
A Llasa Apso often gets cranky around kids.
Rottweilers are extremely protective of their masters.
Chihuahuas aren't too fond of kids. They'd rather be with adults than play around with tots.
Toy Poodles bite people and other animals out of self defense. Unfortunately, 'playing' according to you may be perceived as a form of 'attack' to them.
Dachshunds aren't known for their patience.
Jack Russell Terriers are feisty creatures who require early training to prevent long-term biting and digging problems.
Giant Schnauzers are very dominant. They often challenge adults, particularly strangers.
Cocker Spaniels often suffer from a dangerous genetic disease known as "rage syndrome." This syndrome causes spontaneous violent action against not strangers, but actual family members. Many Spaniels have been put down because of this unwanted behavior. Check with the breeder to ensure your Spaniel is free from this dangerous dog disease.
The Pekingese isn't all that tolerant of strangers.
Miniature Pinschers usually have aggression issues because they've got this "big dog-little body" mind set going on.

Here's a rundown of breeds that are typically gentle but can't shake off their "bad dog" image.
Boxers are pretty good with kids. They are good watchdogs, but will only become aggressive
Bulldogs are very playful and gentle.
Great Danes, while considerable in size, happen to be kind and affectionate.
Mastiffs are especially quiet and docile.
German Shepherds are great with kids too. These are courageous, fiercely loyal dogs who, if trained properly, will be extremely gentle to family and guests.
Rottweilers are also capable of tenderness and affection. They have a bad rep, but if they trust you, you'll never have to worry.

Sorry, Hellrazor, but that is the law in the whole of Ontario, not just in TO. And I do agree with it. It's too bad that he didn't plan for being traded, and the trade was done anyway - but do you really think the law for millions of people should be changed for just one foreigner?

Mark Buehrle Will Have to Live Apart From Family Because of Toronto’s Pit Bull Laws
Pitcher's pit bull outlawed in Toronto, so family won't join him once season begins.
Dogs are part of the family too. No matter what breed they are.

I have two border collie mixes. The mix was with a golden retriever.
They practice their craft every day between the two of them. The herd and protect. Are they a problem no. Can they be a problem to a stranger yes. This is their yard.
They will not bite but they will be loud. Even the coyotes avoid my yard.
If dogs are raised to be aggressive they will be. If dogs are raised to be watchful and alert they will be.

I think some owners of pit bulls are vicious which is why the stipulation is out there. Labs are considered the second most dangerous breed. My lab would probably let you murder me in cold blood if you gave him a bone and pet him. It's owners. Not the dog.

weddy11 Remember that Rottweilers were also considered too dangerous to be owned by families before pits were brought into the discussion. Mine is territorial and willing to protect my house or vehicle with no second questions. Has she attacked someone for coming into my house without ringing the doorbell or me opening the door- you better believe it. Has she attacked any of my nieces and nephews when visiting- only with licks to clean their faces and herds them around.(Which is natural instinct for the breed, they were bred to be herders originally). I have to take responsibility to make sure that she is comfortable, introduce her to people, and not allow a punk kid to open my vehicle without me present to try petting her. My responsibility. My husky has similar traits as well. Both are protective of my family and their territory. Just like a guard dog should be.
As for the insurance claim- it depends on your provider. My car, house, life, and pet insurance are all covered by the same company. They are willing to protect and prosecute for ANY dog regardless of breed.
