It is becoming very trendy for guys to shave or trim off more than just thier facial hair. In fact many men have decided to shave off all of thier body hair completley. What do you shave or trim and why?

nimravus01 ... That's very true. I also think it helps reduce the need to shave as frequently as it gives you a much closer shave.

It's all about prep, and shave technique. A good razor helps, but, bad prep and technique will not be comfortable. Also, a good post shave balm does wonders.

Do you use an electric shaver or a hand razor?

The hair was itchy, and getting rid of it was more hygienic, which worked for me and my girl friends. It was no big deal and I was a lot more comfortable even though it took more time to keep everything shaved!

Yes, the type with the open strip in the center and a blade on each side. That's what this one takes. I am not seeing a brand on the shaver itself.

What brand of razor is your Dad's anyway? Just to be clear, I've been talking about double edge (DE) razors. You know, the ones with the rounded tops.

Glad to hear that you found it, RENEGADEGAS. Again, check out badgerandblade.com for tips on the technique. Its quite a bit different than the Mach-3 or whatever type razor.

Once you get the proper technique down, it's really easy to get that precision shave, LOL.

Oh, and try some different blades... Not all blades are created equal. The Wilkinson-Sword (found at Wal-Mart) aren't the worst if you want to get something quick. However, Feather (from Japan) is my favorite brand. You can get a nice sample pack of different blades from westcoastshaving.com

nimravus01 ... Hey thanks again! I will check there and continue looking for my Dads. Everything is fine with it, he just quit using it and somehow it ended up with me. I would use it on my face to try it out but probably not on other areas that require a little more precision. LOL! Thanks again for all the info!

No problem RENEGADEGAS,

I did a cursory search on ebay and came up with several current auctions for vintage Gillette razors. Current bids range anywhere from $10 for 3 piece (non adjustable) razors, to $40 for adjustable, "butterfly" razors in good condition. Of course, there are some pristine examples in the $100+ range, but, if you're looking for one to actually use, and not just a collectors item, that's way too much money IMO. Some of the adjustables are comparable to a brand new Merkur in the $65-$80 range.
Also, looking at sold listing on ebay, you'll see some nice ones that have gone for as little as $22. As always, patience is a virtue.

After the initial purchase of the razor, the blades are super-cheap. Way more cost effective in the long run over a Mach-3 or similar.

nimravus01 ... Thanks!! I will check that out! I knew you could still find the blades just hadn't seen any razors. I have my Dads somewhere packed away but it would be easier to find another one! Ha!!

Renegadegas, I found my Gillette at an antique shop. You can probably find one on ebay. However, there are a few companies making brand new razors, like Merkur, for example. As for blades, there are dozens of companies still making nice double edge replacement blades. (My favorite is Feather from Japan.) As for the brush and cream, I use 'The Art of Shaving', but, there are several companies making even better brushes and other products.

Check out www.badgerandblade.com There is a wealth of info regarding all things shaving there.

Had to shave my face every day in the Navy for the last 9 years. I got out and let my beard grow, but, now I'm down to a goatee. Even so, I only shave around it about twice a week. I use a trimmer in between shaving. When I do shave, I lather up with a badger hair brush and heavy cream. I shave with a 1950's era Gillette double edged razor. As for the rest of they body... I don't have anyone to impress, so, it's au naturel.

Been getting warmer here, too. Unlike you, RenGas, I'm letting my beard (Van Dyke) grow longer.. it's only an inch or two for now.

I wanted to see what it would like; it sure makes my face look longer, lol.

GocartMozart ... I found a Braun Body Groomer tonight at the store. Looks similar to the Norelco and a few dollars less. You might want to check that one out while your shopping for a shaver.

I'm not the hairiest guy in the world, but Ive used electric razors for years. I actually need to get new blades for one or two of mine. When the blades are not sharp and you don't trim the long hairs, electric razors will tend to catch & pull a hair now & then. Not a nice feeling. I'd still rather use them then have to get all lathered up to shave.

@RenGas,

I haven't picked it up yet, but I plan to! Meanwhile, I still make do with the trimmer on my Norelco shaver, which is not really ideal.

I'm hoping a dedicated body groomer will make the task easier and leave better results. The less time spent on maintenance, the better, lol.

I'm doing fine, yep. How's that Norelco working out?

I'm thinking out about getting this one from Walmart. The Philips Norelco BG2020/31 Body Groom for about $30.

Similar to yours?
