yes. For the air filter (not cabin air filter), I have vacuumed the filter half way through its life, but have not prolonged the change interval.

The dealer told me my cabin filter needed to be changed but the charge was $75. I bought one for $20, watched a U Tube video on how to do it, and did it myself. Ya gotta love Google and U Tube.

" I use a product called OdoBan which doesn't just cover the odor, but rather eliminates it entirely."

I've also heard of a product called Atmosklear that is supposed to kill musty odors in vents.

Question: Could these products be sprayed into the openings just below the windshield?

Hello Naintroll,

You said, "Mine needs changing now because when you first turn on the AC, there is a dingy smell coming from the vents."

Hemond is correct in his diagnosis of the "issue" which is quite common. I use a product called OdoBan which doesn't just cover the odor, but rather eliminates it entirely. Turn your blower on the highest speed and choose the recirculate function, then spray Odoban in the air intake (usually under the dash on the passenger side). Since the purpose of the Cabin Filter is to capture odors, pollen and other contaminates, change that also.

Here is a note of caution. If your area has a high pollen problem in the Spring (South Carolina is severe), make very sure your air-conditioner evaporator coil is draining beneath the vehicle with the A/C running. Choose a day with high humidity to verify this. You don't want the drain to be plugged entirely. There really isn't an easy way to disassemble the evaporation / heater core compartment, nor is their a way to flush it out. If the drain is blocked, then you've got a service issue.

By the way, this is a problem on home A/C units in areas like mine. In this case I flush mine with water and an air compressor.

Best Wishes :-). MGY
