I have noticed that over the last 30 years, car wheels have been slowly increased in their size. In the 80s, 14" and 15" wheels seemed to be average standard and now its seems 17" to 19" wheels are more the norm. Why might that be?

Part of the reason is that cars are getting taller, so the larger wheels are needed to fill the larger wheel wells, at least to the human eye

As wheels get bigger, they get heavier. We don't need 18" and larger wheels for passenger cars. The lower profile tires give slightly better handling, but we don't drive on race tracks with chicanes and hairpin turns.
The lower profile tires give a harsher ride, and the heavier wheels increase the unsprung wheel weight, forcing designers who have been trying to cut weight to boost mileage to beef up suspension components.

why is anything ....anything ?

i ask why the wheels have gotten smaller ?

covered wagons wheels are around 40"
cars in the 30's wheels where 26"
by the late 1940 wheels where 15"
by the 1960 the common wheel was 14"
by the late 70's to early 80's the wheels where 13" and on a honda 12"
now there going back up again

so why is anything anything ? there is no reason

the first cars where square then they where round , then square and now there round again

wheel sizes range from 13" to 20".

I suppose it's about style, 20" rims on a 4dr. car look stupid to me, but I'm never right according to some people.
