Have you ever owned a Subaru? Would you? Why not?

I am thinking about getting one as my next car. I like that they have AWD standard in every car they make and they have also earned the "Top Safety Pick" award for every model, two of their cars go beyond that and get "Safety Pick +".

Most cars either do not have AWD available or it is a option. In the Ford Fusion for example if you get one with AWD the price will start around $34,000. You can get a nicely equipped Legacy for around $30,000, with prices starting in the low $20's for base models.

What do you think about Subaru?

No. And I absolutely loathe the folk-type music they use in their commercials these days. It sets my teeth on edge.

no.

drove a few. they feel tinny and flimsy, interiors are horrible, and I never ever see an old one running, unlike Toyotas and Hondas.

I'll stick to my Detroit iron and British steel.

No and more than likely won't ever own one. I had thought about looking at a Forester until I read that if you have a bad tire with an AWD vehicle they recommend replacing all four tires.

Yes but find their interiors and non-essential parts poorly made or poorly designed.

Good Morning mnrick041,

No, I haven't owned a Sabaru, nor have I worked on one. Your final two questions can be answered as one. I bought a Chevrolet 2012 Sonic LT Hatchback last year and just recently a 2012 Ford Ranger XL. They serve my needs well and, hopefully will for many years to come.

Take care :-). MGY

My bud once had the Subaru sports car. (don't know its name) Cool car for a geek. It had every electronic toy imaginable and many you never imagined. Mostly reliable. A few electrical glitches as I recall. The clutch did fail but my bud drove like an animal so I don't fault Subaru.

It had a lot of quirkiness and weirdness to it. I thought it was charming though. Not a cookie cutter car at all. One example was it only had one wiper. This big az-ed thing which emerged/retracted out of the hood on a bizarre articulating mechanism. Fascinating to watch the gadget work, and it worked well. But you kept thinking "Where's the other one?"

All the instruments were on movable pods. The lights alone had 4 separate controls? Huh?

I must respond to some posters, to CORRECT FALLACIES and INACCURATE ASSUMPTIONS

1) Regarding 2Tall's post, YES, I not only like, but LOVE American. The question is just where can you get ANY car that is totally American made?? The disturbing answer is NOWHERE.

If you read the parts content listing of many models in both Toyota's and Subaru's line, you will see that they could actually declare they are AMERICAN and not Imports. They choose not to, believing it enhances their brand. Over 10 years ago, the president of Toyota told GM's Chairman that they could take them any time and could be declared as American. Now Toyota has overtaken them, then Ford -- YEA!!! -- overtook Toyota last year, but only on several models.

Most, and SOON it will be ALLl, of Subaru's line -- models sold in North America -- is made in Indiana. The majority of parts and steel is American. It is made with American labor. All of the design for about the last 5 years is done right here in America by Americans.

BTW, the same Indiana plant also makes the chassis for Toyota's Camry and Corolla. There are also some parts made for some of those so-called "American" brands.

2) rjro posted, QUOTING: "...plus cost of tires is also a deterent."
My Response: What the heck?? The price of tires?? Are you kidding me?? The cost of tires, depending on size and specs, is the (relatively) SAME for all vehicles that require that particular tire. Regardless of any 2 or 3 vehicles, if they ALL require the same size and specs of tire and you put high quality tires on them, then the cost is basically -- if not exactly -- the same.

I actually get BETTER wear and mileage on my Subie's tires, when comparing the exact same type of tire to other vehicles. The WRX STi is the only exception, but it needs the soft rubber type tires -- which shred little bits of rubber every time you turn -- and I corner hard in that Subie. If I put the same type of tires on my 1968 Camaro Z28, it will get about the same mileage and wear.

I ahd a 1984 Subaru GL wagon that was GREAT! I would not buy a Subaru today because they are all AWD, except for the BRX, and I do not care for the BRX. AWD is totally unnecessary in this neck of the woods, and adds complexity, weight and worse MPG. I would buy another Subaru in a minute if they offered FWD cars again.
