In Houston, Texas we do it online, mail, in person through the tax assessor. Mail costs a $1 more. I have to always send proof of insurance; so I use the mail and donate extra towards parks and veterans.

Where I live we have these Hennepin County Service Centers situated around the county. They are a combination Courthouse/Library/Drivers license/Marriage License/Passports and various other things.

In Fl you have to go to DMV,online or by mail. But is strange to me is that in FL. it cost more by mail than going in the office. When I was in VA. they gave you a $1 discount to buy them online because they didn't want to hire more personnel in the office to service everyone.

When I got my personalized plates, I had to go to downtown Houston and pick them up. Over half the line at the downtown office was people picking up personalized plates. And now I drive around with my blood type ("A*POS" where "*" is the outline of Texas) on my "Be A Blood Donor" license plates.

Local County-operated DMV office. I'd do it online, but they charge an extra fee for it.

Not here. Yearly it's just the county tax office for tags and the DMV office for licenses and vehicle transfers.

I used to go to AAA, as the lines were shorter, but that necessitated writing a check. Several years back I started paying online at the DMV's website by credit card, and I haven't written any checks for a number of years.

Good Morning Trowinsamoan. Your questions are a bit complicated in South Carolina. If a vehicle is purchased new or used through a dealership or used car facility, the dealership handles the paperwork through an online system with SCDMV. If a vehicle is purchased used and was privately owned, the purchaser must take the signed title to SCDMV to obtain a new title. The selling price for the vehicle must be on the title for state sales tax which cannot exceed $300.00. That is a "sacred cow" in SC. The sales tax is 7% up to $300.00. You can buy a Class A RV for $250,000.00 and still only pay $300.00! The cost of transferring plates differs if you use your current plates or order new ones.

If a vehicle is already owned by you, you MUST first pay personal property taxes to the county of residence. Once the taxes are paid, SCDMV is notified and a new registration card and "year" sticker is sent to you via USPS. The sticker is $1.00 and is added to the county's property tax bill. A vehicle cannot be registered without first paying a personal property tax based on the vehicle's fair market value. The county will process your request via USPS or online (a convenience fee is added). New license plates instead of a sticker are issued every ten years. One other item which requires an appeal is if a vehicle has high mileage. You must notify the county and request a revised personal property tax. It has, in the past been based on 15,000 miles per year of driving. The tax break is very minimal, but every dollar counts. Personal property tax never goes to zero dollars, no matter how old the vehicle may be.

I do not know if AAA is used in any of these processes as I am not a member. Take Care :-) . MGY

BMV "sub station" - smaller local agent of the actual BMV. $54.50 this year for the sticker/renewal. New plates are extra if you need/want them.
