I haven't seen that the additional mpg pays for the additives.

I don't think additive improve gas mileage to any extent that you can see. In the laboratory, maybe a tiny bit. If the additive boosts the octane, then maybe 0.03 mpg more. If the injectors are clogged, unclogging them helps a little as far as mpg but helps more in terms of smooth running.

Gvan says, ..." studied dozens of these products and concluded that none of them work."

"Never" is a pretty strong word. I suppose a lot, maybe most, of them don't work. But there are certain products which accomplish certain things for certain needs, such as octane boosters.

A poster ("Houkster") discussed a product caled "Ethanol Defense" by Bell Products. I checked some articles, and just acquired a bottle. I'll post my results after a few tankfuls.

Avoid “miracle” fuel additives and gadgets. The Federal Trade Commission has studied dozens of these products and concluded that none of them work. Some may cause engine damage or contribute to decreased fuel efficiency.

No. Fuel additives may have a purpose but mpg increase is not one of them.

Fuel additives are expensive. Even if they work to a limited bit, I would be losing in the cost per mile category.

Additives are mainly to diminish carbon deposits on valves and fuel injectors, not to get better gas mileage. Of course, if they are clogged, your mileage will suffer.
