I use fuel injector cleaner to keep injectors clean .

Once a year, I use a bottle of Power Service Diesel Kleen in my truck to clean out the fuel lines, fuel filter, and injection rail.

On older autos, you can use water in a spray bottle or anything that will SLOWLY inject the water into the intake. IT will boil the water and "steam" clean the combustion chamber.
When the auto is up to normal temperature, bring the rpms up around 2000 and slowly inject the water.
Warning: Do not get water on the mass air sensor, and if you are not confident in your abilities, it is best to not try. You can cause more harm, than good. There are how-to videos on youtube.
