I consistently find myself swinging easily into a pump on the drivers side, just to remember and have to turn around. Is it just me, or do gas stations cater to driver side gas tanks?

It could be on the roof for all they care. Now, it might make a difference if they are concerned as to where your gas filler pipe might be, but I doubt it. They build 'em and we come! It's up to us to maneuver our vehicles close enough to the pumps so that our gas caps are as close to the nozzles as we feel is safe and comfortable.
