I am seriously thinking of getting a new GPS. I have a Magellan RoadMate 2000 which is pretty much an antique. I am looking at Garmin and TomTom the most. Lane assist and traffic seem important to me.

Which brand and model do you recommend?

if you travel a lot, up to date maps are helpful, if just locally then letting it go out of date for a few years isn't much of an issue.

I've had TT and Magellan. My current Magellan is maybe 4 years out of date. Although it works great, no way is it worth paying for a map update. A new one is half the price of a map update.

Its stupid to update. Get a new unit.

I'll get Garmin this time only because I've never had one.

I been researching this too....most seem to say Garmin is best...had a pilot tell me one time Garmin is the only one he would buy as it is considered tops in the aviation industry.

Yes, the Garmin, Nuvi 52 has some nice features beyond what it replaced. The wife uses it a lot but I took it on a 5500 mile trip to eastern Canada and as long as I was in the States, it was a gem. We do need to update the maps.

I just bought a Garmin Nuvi52. I LOVE IT! We had a tomtom before. The Nuvi will show the individual lanes if there's a split, exit or turn, tell you the road name to turn at, and will tell you if your destination is on the left or the right side of the road. My tomtom couldn't do any of that.

No one gives a reason why they like one brand over the next. They just list a one word answer. Such abusive responses waste our time here.
