I am seriously thinking of getting a new GPS. I have a Magellan RoadMate 2000 which is pretty much an antique. I am looking at Garmin and TomTom the most. Lane assist and traffic seem important to me.

Which brand and model do you recommend?

I was looking at the new generation Garmins in BB the other night. At last you can set a 1 minute timeout on the display. My TomTom and Magellan don't allow that. At best it's a 10minute TO.

I like to use the GPS in flight but the 10min TO destroys the battery. I like knowing what anonymous city or landform I'm flying over. (not to mention airspeed) I've seen so many cool things from the air, but no way to know where they were.

Also the TT has better reception inside a flight cabin than Magellan. I'm going to get this new generation Garmin to try it out. Hate spending retail for these things yet the discounted Garmins are all last generation. I'm used to spending $50 for a GPS... but it seems these models are now $150.

I haven't seen a really good GPS unit yet and I've been looking for years.

I won't be happy until we can upload custom routes to the GPS unit.
