I've used AMSOIL motor oil for about six years in my 2003 Elantra. Not sure if my gas millage is any better because I switched over when I got the car new. I get an average of 26.6 MPG. I have been thinking about using other products from AMSOIL, like the air cleaner, oil filter, and grease for the joints. AMSOIL has been around for a long time. Any thoughts?

A "synthetic" blend has about 15-20 "synthetic" oil that is Group III petroleum. It is in no way a synthetic lubricant.

1) True synthetic lubricants are not made with petroleum but a ruling years ago by NAD allowed marketers to define what they mean by "synthetic" oil. In practice, they let customers decide what's synthetic and mostly, these oils are a ripoff. They don't provide much in the way of additional protection and the marketers want you to change the oil according to the OEM's specs that are drawn up with the expectation that the person will be using a Group II oil. Consequently, a person buying something like Pennzoil Platinum synthetic or Castrol Syntec is throwing good oil away because the oil is still perfectly good at the end of the OEM's OCI.

2) The engine is only a part of the drivetrain. To realize any increase in mileage, the whole drivetrain needs a high quality true synthetic lube. That means converting the engine, transmission and differential.

3) True synthetic lubricants are more durable than conventional lubes. While there may not be much difference, initially, between mileage with a true synthetic versus a conventional lube, the difference will increase as the conventional lube will deteriorate more quickly.

Synthetic oil will not help with gas mileage, but a good group IV (don't bother with III) will have much lower sulphur and acid content and will be a better choice for long engine life

None of these oils are true synthetic lubricants. They are all made mostly from Group III petroleum.

Yes, but always buy it on sale in advance and change it myself, with a quality filter.
