Yup...
one that gets a little over 40....
One that has averaged 48 for the last year and 1/2.
Both are cars....I don't even check the M/C.
I'm sure it's up there too.

One pickup that gets terrible mileage (like most pickups do)
It's going bye-bye by the end of the year.
So is the M/C if possible.

dontuknowOH sez....
281 CU.IN. V/8s should do better on mileage, because I had a 351 size V/8 carbureted that did better on average years ago.

A 4.6L Mercury gets 28-29 on the road...and the mileage on a 4.6L pick-up sucks..."WHY"
ck out the following...
Engine: Heads/Cam/intake/injectors/throttle bodies/computer/sensors/ect.
Vehicle horsepower/torque/weight (power curve/RPMs)
Aerodynamics/drag (tire size/width)... pushing a truck through the air is like pushing a concrete block.

And as far as comparing it to a earlier 351... apples and oranges....

There's ways to up your mileage "some", however my luck has been it usually cost more than it's worth.

I have noticed that My truck not only has much low temperature fast idle too often but also its sole ambient engine intake air source is a constant supply directed from the cold exterior front fender-well area into the filter air box.

That's fine after normal operation temps arrive(under hood)areas. on cooler morning/nights whatever ETC. the source is still bringing much colder air into the EFI system monitors. They regularly transmit to the ECM to make sometimes a richer mixture than necessary for my driving habits when I scat away like Grandma in motion often....even Summer season.

I'm going to check the thermo air temps at the box filter area for the ambient actual pre warming engine run time period, the coolant thermostat seems fine. 281 CU.IN. V/8s should do better on mileage, because I had a 351 size V/8 carbureted that did better on average years ago, but of course less the E-10.

Three do get over 30 MPGs, Not so for the truck/performance ride, the truck is the worst and it's fast idle speed/length of time interval is ridiculous, warm or cold weather on a fresh start-up. I DIYed a couple things which helped, still have one to go, thinking a chip might help.

My driving habits are tailored for saving fuel, the truck resists because of programming. When an older 4X4 with a much larger engine(carb system) gets much better mileage and total weight being close between the two, I blame the programmed arrangement, engine CEL stays off, truck runs fine, but likes more fuel if the IGN. is on, Cold fast idle is way too fast and some restarts.

Also E-10 made it worse, mainly city driving, highway about 64 MPH. seems best.....? During Summer season. Tail-pipes stay clean, a bit perplexed!
