It's because the taxes are higher in Michigan.

Totally diregard my earlier post. I inadvertently followed the previous post and didn't pay attention to when the original post was made.

I was entirely at fault for the post.

First, the Gss Buddy listed price for Speedway in Niles, Michigan is $3.51 per gallon, not $3.55. And the gas prices at Speedway gas stations in South Bend, Inidiana range from $3.49 per gallon (at one station) to $3.65 per gallon. Not only are you wrong about "Most South Bend Indiana Speedways $3.35", there are no gas stations listed on Gas Buddy selling gas in South Bend, Indiana for $3.35 per gallon' the lowest posted gas price for South Bend is $3.49 per gallon.

But, even if you were correct with the prices you posted in the original post, how would the price for one isolated gas station in Niles, Michigan, because it's different than the gas prices in a different state, be "Speedway Punishes Michigan"? Even if you said "Speedway Punishes Niles, Michigan", how would that be Speedway punishing anyone? You're talking the gas price at one isolated gas station. But, in any case, the price of gas at Speedway in Niles is similar to the price of gas at other Niles gas stations, and in fact lower priced than many other gas stations in Niles, and the price of gas at Speedway gas stations in South Bend seems to be pretty consistent with competing gas stations.

If you're going to say that, because the Speedway gas station in Niles is higher than than the lowest gas price in South Bend (by two cents per gallon), Speedway is "punishing" Michigan, are you also going to say the other gas station brands in Niles are "punishing" Michigan because they're higher priced than some stations in South Bend? Or are you saying, if other gas stations in Niles are higher priced than gas stations in South Bend that they're not "punishing Michigan", it's something else, and it's only "punishing" if Speedway does it? Or, are you using Speedway as your only example and what other gas station brands do is something that doesn't matter?

I'm jut trying to, after correcting the prices you posted in the original post, understand your point.

Wonder what the other gas stations are charging.

Yes, I know Speedway tries to be the lead pricer when it comes to gas in their markets, but as often as not they end up dropping their prices when the other stations hold their own.

Are the taxes different in Michigan vs. Indiana?

There are plenty of explanations, but this is in the wrong category and, ultimately, if you don't like the price somewhere, don't buy there. Use the GasBuddy mobile app and find less expensive gas near where you are!

Is this supposed to be some kind of call for a boycott or just yet another never ending useless rant that belongs in another forum category? Seriously, is Speedway making you buy gas from them? If not, then buy your gas somewhere else and post the prices. Problem solved.

As I have stated in the past, "GREEDWAY" will raise their prices just before a holiday and shove it up your a** and tell you Merry Christmas. Why anyone would do business with this company is a mistery to me. As I have stated before and I'll say it again "OLD GREEDWAY" will never have to worry about me darkening their doorway, and anybody in their right mind would do the same.

"Greedway", Whats your excuse now? Gas at Speedway went to $3.25 today at a time all other stations were around $2.95 (or less). Also why does Speedway drop their prices at one or two pennies at a time when they go up 25 or 30 cents at a time? Just another good reason to do business with ANYBODY but "Greedway".

I am enjoying the fact that Murphy USA both in Indiana and Michigan is the first to lower gasoline prices just before Christmas.

It never grows old to point out the facts to many new Gasbuddies that while Speedway with many more new stations in Indiana is the first to raise their gasoline prices- others such as Kroger, Murphy USA, and Admiral are often first to lower gasoline prices.

It is very disturbing to see that other wholly owned parts of Speedway such as Rich gas stations are being used to "cover" Speedway gas price spikes.

I wish everyone a Merry Christmas, now I have to fill up at Meijer and get addtional dime off per gallon.

Not only that, but prices are down the last two weeks without a spike, and nobody is complaining that Speedway is driving down prices. I bought gas for $2.989 today, and saw some later for $2.829.

Darn that Speedway for driving down prices!!!! :D

Go to "thegasgame.com" - Speedway is the focus of a college paper / it won't die 'cause only Speedway exercises this "Spike all the stations at once" marketing tool to control retail gasoline prices. What is new, Speedway now has 300 stations in Indiana along with 300 in Michigan. Speedway continues to buy up the competition.

The purpose of gasbuddy is to inform motorists where the lowest price gas can be found, therefore it also is the necessary to inform where the highest gas prices are. Speedway is not a necessary evil.

There was no reason for a spike this time around. Locally, I saw a lot of Speedways staying at a lower price, making me think this wasn't a Speedway influenced spike. The day of the spike, we saw wholesale prices drop almost 7¢. This would be a good reason those that went up are coming down like a rock.

Crazyness in pricing!
Prices change by the day/minute

Caro
Monday $3.38am 3.55pm
Wednesday 3.55am 3.52pm
Thursday $3.39am

Drove to Detroit Monday:
Davison had a low of $3.15am then $3.55pm
prices below Davison were 3.34 ~ 3.48 on the way back then we hit Davison! shocking!!
Must be another transport truck had a flat or the news said something or a speedway crap game started for the Holidays

Remember Thanksgiving how the prices went wild in this area and stayed High until the day after!

Then dropped like a rock

Here we go again, at 10:30 AM Tuesday morning -
Niles MI Speedway was ordered to hike price to $3.55 a gallon while
South Bend IN Speedway three miles south ordered to $3.49 a gallon.

It is interesting to note that Niles Michigan is a terminal on the Wolverine gasoline pipeline. Marathon's rack is around the corner from the Niles MI Speedway.

De Intocht van Sinterklaas (The entrance/arrival of Sinterklaas)

There was a problem with the boats. Then when he finally arrived, they had a problem finding a horse. Happens every year. Sounds and looks very similar to what's going on in Holland, MI. Although I wonder... is Zwarte Piet (Black Piet) going to be white with black face, or African American?

In Michigan, We will celebrate the arrival of Sinterklaas with the announcement of the Holland Town Crier on Friday evening, Dec. 7th. Sinterklaas will lead the processional on his white horse with the help Zwarte Piet. The children will follow with their homemade lanterns to Christmas lighting ceremony in the park then hot chocolate & cookies at the museum. May your family be blessed during this wonderful Christmas season, its snowing around TC & the Soo tonite.

National Entry Sinterklaas 2012 in Roermond

Actually, he arrived November 17th (in a landlocked city... on a boat... but hey). I watched the video of his arrival with my kid. My kid has also had two presents from him after leaving out a shoe with a carrot (for the horse) in it, and singing the Sinterklaas song:

-----
Sinterklaas kapoentje,
gooi wat in m'n schoentje,
gooi wat in m'n laarsje,
dank u Sinterklaasje.
-----

I'm very good, thank you.

At the moment, we are good for some price drops. Hopefully we can keep on dropping, but that's all up to the world price of oil.

As I've demonstrated time and again in the Spike Line thread, with the price on the market, taxes, and fees, that we don't see any higher gas prices here than we should, Speedway or not.

The shtick is getting old. And it's been proven false. Time to give it up.

Therefore based on the total amount of state taxes, lowering business property tax in Michigan is a good thing. I would like to see Speedway pass on these lower taxes in the form of lower gasoline prices.
That would be a good thing.

Yes, Michigan has lowered various business taxes including a variety of property taxes.

STATE: Community leaders concerned with repeal of personal property tax

-----
The tax — applicable to the purchase of items such as furniture, machinery and office equipment — is criticized as administratively cumbersome by businesses and elected officials. It also acts as a disincentive to investment by effectively raising the cost of owning machinery and equipment, something that’s especially true for Michigan’s bedrock industry — manufacturing — which tends to have higher costs for new equipment.
-----

That has nothing to do with property taxes.

Speedway as a business in Michigan is now paying less property tax. therefore property taxes are not a factor in higher Michigan Speedway gasoline prices. From Mlive.com - Ground-breaking Michigan personal property tax legislation passes Senate

Published: Thursday, May 10, 2012, 1:21 PM Updated: Thursday, May 10, 2012, 7:19 PM By Melissa Anders | manders@mlive.com

LANSING, MI — The Michigan Senate passed legislation to eliminate parts of the personal property tax after adding more protections for local communities and schools that rely on the tax revenues. The bills would phase out the personal property tax (PPT) for industrial properties and provide an exemption for small commercial properties.

Don't believe me? Here's and article proving me right...

-----
Unsurprisingly for anyone who has lived through the past five years in Indiana or Michigan, tax policy plays a role. At the beginning of the recession, Indiana was debating property tax reform. The legislation passed before the deepest economic declines, beginning a three-year tax cut in the state.

The same time frame saw Michigan pass a new business tax and then slap on a surcharge before the new Michigan business tax had a chance to become law. The action did not improve Michigan's reputation for poor fiscal management.

-----

Such a policy decision would not help matters. According to the Tax Foundation, Indiana ranked 21st in the nation of 2011 on the Index for Corporate Taxes, while Michigan was 48th. Indiana also ranked 10th nationally for favorable business climate, while Michigan was 17th.

Who's placing boulders in your way? Not me. I'm just trying to set you straight on some of the extra fees Michigan stations are levied over Indiana stations. You just fail to understand or wish to realize it is true.

>>>
It is clear that Speedway sets their higher Michigan prices because they want to.
<<<

Yes, this is right logical, isn't it? Because they want to. There is no business reason (at least none you'll believe), just because. I think the only "boulders" here are the ones you place in your own path.
