If you can get half the nation to do it yes it will help but we all know that's not going to happen.

Like some mentioned you need enough people to get in on a boycott to make it effective. If not then yes it is a waste of time.

The ONLY way a boycott can work is if ENOUGH people boycott one major company (eg.. PetroCan) until they drop their price. Then move to another company until they drop their price and so on. It won't take very long to start a gas war. A number of years ago, I saw gas selling for $.25/litre in Montreal during a gas war when gas was averaging around $.80 a litre everywhere else. Boycotting all stations for one day has absolutely no effect.

Yup. USE less gas. That's the ONLY way to lower gas prices. More supply, less demand.

Of course they are. For every one person that doesn't buy gas on a particular day, there are thousands that do. And all of those people who didn't buy gas on that day, are going to need to buy gas eventually. So, profits suffer for one day (I actually don't think they do), but the next day profits are higher because those people have now purchased the fuel they skipped the day before. Or they prepare for the boycott by topping off the day before.

I think it depends on the product or business you boycott. Gas has a low price elasticity of demand (< 1) and therefore consumers are less responsive to price changes since gas is a necessity (like insulin for a diabetic). However, if people could carpool, buy more fuel efficient cars, and follow all of the fuel economy improvement tips then they could increase their time between fill-ups and put some heat on the gas and oil companies.

I do better, I buy gas, when I am upset at them in $8.00 to $10.00 increments. This costs them money, as cost per transaction goes up for them.
