They do work, but only if the boycott can be sustained. A one-day boycott doesn't do anything significant.

boycotts are not a waste--station owneres MUST sell; they cannot drink their gas like expiring milk.

Yes, I doubt it would work unless many could do without gas for a month or more.

No! If only 15% of BP and Shells customers bought gas elsewhere BP and Shell would reduce prices to bring those customers back! And as the gas prices at BP and Shell drop their competition would also drop prices to remain competitive!
I chose BP & Shell because they are nation-wide companies. Ideally I would choose 2 national companies with the highest quarterly profits. That way the companies being boycotted would, perhaps, change quarterly minimizing the impact to the independently owned stations associated with those large companies.

Yes because think about it the gas station would even out the day before or the day after the boycott for the loss money of the day of the boycott.

Purchasing gas is voting with dollars. The problem is we all need gas. If the group boycotting could find other means of transportation or if the group had a quantifiable goal like maybe reduce use by 10% or 20% to put downward pressure on prices, I think it could work.

Yes. Most people don't care enough to boycott, but even if they did, they wouldn't be able to hold out, because we all need to go somewhere, and when that tank get's close to "E", they're gonna fill up, boycott or not, and most often, they're gonna fill up at the closest station, regardless of brand. The only way to effectively make a boycott work, would be for everyone to either start making their own fuel (think bio-diesel), walking, or riding a bicycle, or for the magic fairy to come down and suddenly make electric vehicles 100x more efficient at 1/2 the cost.

I think if done properly, no. Station owners claim to make cents on the gallon. It's mostly the oil companies who profit according to them.

I think if everyone could boycott a gas station for two weeks and go to another one it would hurt the station..not just one day.

I think if it was properly planned where a good percentage of residents didnt go to or purchase any items from a gas station for a day... it could work..

no they are not a wiast of time when done right. We had a boycott in Windsor last year and i saw the prices fall, you just have to remeber to always focus on the big three as it were, Esso,Petro Canada which is own by Esso, shell

Boycotts do send a message and companies hate negative publicity, but for the most part they are useless and probably hurt the local franchisees more than the oil companies.

Boycotts are only as good as the numbers that enforce them. Unfortunately people are lazy lately and don't relate good to change. We tell ourselves, “what can one person do to change the situation” and we don’t get involved. If we were to stick together and really apply ourselves to the problems they would get adjusted or fixed.
If everyone were to boycott one gas company (the same one) for one whole month the Company would have to lower the price or fold. The company would feel the effect in the first week and by the end of the month they would be begging for you to buy at the pumps. It would only take about 6 months of targeting each gas company and the prices would lower to a competitive rate.
Thanks to Gas we have the recourses to get the job done now we just need to commit.
