Dam_pup, I think we officially ended up with 10.6"! It was apparently an all-time record snowfall for here.
Being a guy, I hate to say this but I think a man must have measured this snowfall. ;) It sure didn't seem like that much to me.

Plastic: While I don't think the guy intended anything devious or dangerous, there are a couple disconcerting things about the story.
He was an Army, Green Beret, demolitions expert. He came back from a 3rd tour in Afghanistan in April 2011 to his home in NC. He grew up in Midland, but now lives in NC. I believe he is still active military (for now!).
Apparently it was Standard Operation Procedure (SOP) for those explosives experts to carry at least 2 blocks of C4 with them on every operation they went on. This guy said he usually carried more. He claims when he came back from Afghanistan in April that he put this pack in his garage and never used it until he flew to visit family here in Midland on Christmas Eve. He grabbed that bag in his garage to use as a carry on and put some of his kids toys and such in it. Apparently he didn't check it too closely to see if other stuff was in it!
Here is what gets me... At the Fayetteville, NC airport on 12/24/11, TSA officials found a smoke grenade in his bag! They confiscated the GRENADE, 'admonished' him and, apparently in the holiday spirit, sent him on his way. Now, it is unclear to me if it was the very same bag or not, but I am assuming it was. And, apparently, TSA did NOT find the C4 he had and I supposed he flew from NC to Midland with it in his bag.
On New Year's eve, when he was heading back to home in NC, TSA officials in Midland's airport found the C4 in his bag.... much to Atwater's surprise. He didn't know it was in there. Now this is just me, but after being surprised about my smoke grenade being in my bag in Fayetteville, NC, sometime during the week I was in Midland visiting the family and friends, I THINK I would have checked that bag to see if I left anything else in there... like the C4 I always carried around in Afghanistan. Maybe he figured the bag was clean since TSA in NC didn't find it. Maybe he thought he could get away with bringing it back just like it had slipped by TSA when coming to Midland.
Anyway, as of today, he was still being detained by authorities. I think today they were supposed to have A hearing in a Midland federal court to determine whether Atwater will remain in custody.
I am disappointed that:
1) TSA in NC didn't find the C4 in his pack as he came to Midland.
2) Atwater, a highly trained green beret, didn't think to check that bag's contents either before leaving NC or (after already having a smoke grenade pulled out of his bag in Fayetteville) before he headed back to the airport in Midland to head home.
3) The Army apparently doesn't keep better track of that kind of stuff coming home with their soldiers from deployment. I don't think he needs have that stuff forgotten about in his garage for 8 months.
But that's just me.
