Yes, I like to keep my gas purchases separate from other purchases because of the problem of gas pump skimmer scams. If something other than a gas purchase shows up on my gas card. I know it's a fraud. And it's easy to prove.

It depends on the rewards offered, the amount of fuel puchased in a month, and interest rates. I have an Exxon/Mobil card which saves me 6 cents a gallon if you purchase at least 45 gallons in a billing cycle. I pay it off every month.

So many regular credit cards offer up to 3% back on fuel purchases.
