Most all of the cars I've owned the gas tank filler is on the driver side, which makes the most sense to me. What do you think?

GM some years did it right, they had the filler behind the rear licence plate !
______
It makes a lot of difference. It is much more convenient to have the filler pipe on the driver's side. Secondly, the further the filler pipe is away from any possible exhaust sparks the better because there are drivers who will fuel the car while the engine is still running. Thirdly, the filler pipe is higher when it's on the side of the vehicle and thereby longer reducing the chance of fuel spills because the pump has more time to shut off.

look at the gas gauge icon you'll see a tiny arrow showing you which side the fill cap is on. [don't forget to open the door & remove the cap]

The gas tank filler should always be on the side of the car that has the gas tank spigot. That way the filler will be able to put the gas pump spout in the hole to pump gas into.

Driver's side makes the most sense to me, but I'd like to see a standard. I have two vehicles, one with the filler on the left and one on the right. I get confused all the time when pulling up to the pump. I know I should look at the arrow on the fuel gauge but.....

They say the passenger side is hit less often than the driver's side.

You know there is a triangle beside the icon of a gas pump on your fuel gauge indicating which side of the vehicle one may find the fill hole? I think the idiot who designed that icon should he hung from his fingernails. Think about it, a gas pump with an arrow: Isn't that indicating which side of the GAS PUMP you should park?

To me, it's clear.

For safety, the passenger side.
For convenience, most people like the driver's side.

So you can see what the car company's priority is, safety or convenience. The Japanese car companies often choose safety for Japan (which drives on the left side of the road).
