Most all of the cars I've owned the gas tank filler is on the driver side, which makes the most sense to me. What do you think?

driver's side is easier
passenger side is safer as far as fewer fires (after a collision; more collisions happen on the left rear fender than the right rear fender)

most pumps in my state now have longer fuel hoses so it doesn't really matter anyways

DS does makes more sense though

It depends on the car, before pulling into a gas station I always look at the gas gauge to see what side of the car I need to have near the pump.

Most are on the left, and most pumps are set up for that.....at least that is the same as the flow of traffic.

GM some years did it right, they had the filler behind the rear licence plate !
______
It makes a lot of difference. It is much more convenient to have the filler pipe on the driver's side. Secondly, the further the filler pipe is away from any possible exhaust sparks the better because there are drivers who will fuel the car while the engine is still running. Thirdly, the filler pipe is higher when it's on the side of the vehicle and thereby longer reducing the chance of fuel spills because the pump has more time to shut off.

look at the gas gauge icon you'll see a tiny arrow showing you which side the fill cap is on. [don't forget to open the door & remove the cap]

The gas tank filler should always be on the side of the car that has the gas tank spigot. That way the filler will be able to put the gas pump spout in the hole to pump gas into.

Driver's side makes the most sense to me, but I'd like to see a standard. I have two vehicles, one with the filler on the left and one on the right. I get confused all the time when pulling up to the pump. I know I should look at the arrow on the fuel gauge but.....
