I noticed on my way to work this morning that reg unleaded was $4.01 and premium was $4.51. Normally there's only a 10 cent price difference between reg and mid grade, and another 10 cents between mid grade and premium. Do any of you know why premium is 50 cents more than reg...the difference sounds like it's way too much to me...

It's called creative marketing.

The only difference is octane rating. If higher octane rating is worth the increase cost then go ahead and throw your money away.

Gas stations have to advertise their gas price to passing motorists. This is how they get drivers to pull in and buy. However, the price you see is always only the regular unleaded ("cash") price. To most drivers, regardless of what gas grade they intend to put in, they are strongly influenced to pull in upon seeing a price that appeals to them. Most Mid and Premium grade users just assume that they will probably pay a few cents per gallon more and rarely even find out what their gallon price is, usually just asking for a whole dollar amount or a fill up. So, I believe that station owners are fully aware of this driver psychology and have upped the non-advertised prices accordingly.

I have no idea. I've never in my life experienced such a wide disparancy. I would complain to Obama if I were you.

"Yes, grampi, I know why, as I explained to you in your other topic that is essentially the same as this one.

Your 50-cent price spread example is a cherry picked number that is not typical of what folks see at their local gas station and is not typical of what you see in your local area."

Even the examples you sited were 35 cents difference, which is still rediculous...

Is there any difference or do all the pumps connect to the same tank?

Yeah, it's pretty ridiculous around here, especially when regular is cheap. When regular is in the $3.40's like it was... oh, I don't know, last month, the difference was about 35-55 cents to premium. Now that regular is up, premium is still roughly the same, so it's more like a 30-40 cent jump at worst, which is still crazy.

Because Premium is supposed to have higher octane for sports cars.

"10 cents is huge to you?"

No, 10 cents used to be the norm, but now it's anywhere from 35 to 50 cents difference...THAT'S huge!

Dealer cost at CHicago terminals was 41¢ more today for premium than for regular. It's been running from 35-50¢ for a couple years now.

What I can't explain is the stations that still have just a 20 cent difference. Must be inertia.

.. They tried to spread the price difference here a while back, but the effort failed... most have a 10c difference between grades again now... starting at $3.17 for regular...
