25,000 miles or one year, whichever comes first. AMSOIL synthetic motor oils have saved me thousands of dollars over the years!

When the indicator comes on, I visit the oil change place. Some crazy algorithm that balances temperature, distance, engine stress, and other "proprietary stuff."

You obviously haven't read my post. True synthetic (not made from petroleum) lubes WILL last much longer than conventional petroleum because they were designed to address the reasons why conventional mineral lubes fail.

I installed a true synthetic lubricant, SynLube, in January, 2004 when my Ranger was new and it lasted until March, 2011. It was only replaced then because during the 50K miles on the oil, I'd only burned about 4-6 ounces of oil and SynLube took the oil back for study and gave me free replacement oil. Their OCI for this lubricant is 150K miles, 4K engine hours, or 15 years, WCF.

newer formulas for reg oil ~5000 miles
synthetic blends ~7500 miles
full synthetic~10000-15000 miles & maybe change the oil filter every 6 months
_____
OCI - oil change interval

reg oil - 5000: I agree and some OEMs are recommending 7500 miles

synthetic blends - 7500 miles: There nothing really special about a synthetic blend since usually there's only about 15% "synthetic" oil in the quart. I'd use the same OCI as regular oil.

full synthetic: It depends on what full synthetic means. Most of the pretend synthetics are entirely Group III petroleum which starts out as the same as Group II oil but then it receives additional processing to remove wax to improve cold weather performance. These oils should also receive a higher quality additive package but I have no hard evidence on this point. I'd be OK with 10K but 15K seems a stretch to me.

full true synthetic: There are three oils that are true synthetic oils available to the consumer. First AMSoil (Signature line) will last a year and 25K miles (last I heard); 2) Redline talks about 15K miles but this is almost certainly very conservative; 3) SynLube advertises a 150K mile, 4K engine hours or 15 year OCI WCF (my personal favorite).

With the extended usage intervals, high quality oil filters are critical. I've heard good things about WIX, Purolator and Mobil 1 but for a disposable filter, I'd lean towards Fleetguard or Baldwin as these companies have ties to the industrial sector and those filters have to be good.

Finally, the number of miles is a very poor way to determine usage intervals. Personally, I would link the OCI to how close the mileage is to the EPA mileage estimate because if you're falling short of that mark, it would probably indicate negative engine conditions including short trips, hard stops and starts, and extended idling. In this case I'd adhere to the severe service interval for changing the oil if the OEM provides a recommendation. If your mileage is at or above the EPA estimate, you're probably good extending the interval.

Of course the best way to determine the OCI is to standardize on a specific brand and weight of oil and then send a used sample to an oil analysis lab for some solid recommendations.
