...after paying almost $40 for 10 gallons of gas, the least we could get is a free consolation prize of a drink or candy bar. Sheesh. Painful.

I'm sure the company you work for makes as little mark-up as gas stations make, and I'm sure the company you work would be more than willing to give away services or products of relatively high value simply because I bought something else that provided little income. Am I correct, the company you work for would do that, essentially giving up any income it might make in order to make me happy?

Gas stations in the United States mark up gas approximately 9 to 12 cents per gallon above the wholesale price it pays, and from that mark-up must pay operating expenses which include rent, salaries, tax, paying off the investment loan, franchise fees, insurance, and credit card fees. Considering that most gas stations are in the 100,000 gallons per month or less range (many are in the 65,000 to 75,000 gallons per month range or less), that means that a gas station might take in $12,000 a month. Over a year, that's about $144,000.

Sound like a lot, $12,000 a month, $144,000 a year? First take away the annual rent, several thousand a month. Then take away the salaries for about four people woring for minimum wage ($15,000 a year - something I'm sure that most people can't live on), or five people. Take away the credit card fees which are about 2.5 percent of the price at the pump as well as transaction and equipment fees. I assume that someone will have to find a way to pay for utilities such as electricity. We still haven't said anything about paying off the financial investment in the business, let alone the owners/operators making any profit. Okay, profit's a bad word; how about we call it a return on their investment, just like the company you work for wants to get a return on its investment in the business.

And you still think that someone should be giving you a free car wash and wax? Simply because you bought something from them?

I'm going to assume that the above was written in jest. No one can suggest that with a straight face.

I would rather get 10 gallons for $40 than 9.5 gallons and a candy bar for $40.

giwan: yep thats about normal. Hate to burst your bubble. Of course Visa/MC/AmEx make about double that. Imagine that.
Oh yeah, I can many times make more off one soda, one cup of coffee or one candy bar than 10 gallons of fuel. Getting rich, right?

It's not the stations making all the money. It's the big oil corporations. Ask them for a treat and see what you get.

Why exactly should you get a free treat? They can't steal and then give you something, it would cut into their coffers considerably.

So the gas stations, who make almost no profit on the gasoline they sell, should give out the things in the store that give them the highest profit margins which help keep them afloat and profitable (and in business)? So by doing this, they lose that profit, and then probably net a loss in profit by doing so, which in turn will bring the price of gasoline up further? Makes absolutely no sense whatsoever.

Just help yourself to a few extra napkins out of the dispenser. That's about all you get.

I have seen stations that give out free coffee with fills but they really don't have to give out anything at all.

We go there because we need gas in the first place.

They would just jack the price up a few more cents per gallon to pay for your "freebie". Free very rarely is.
