Do you stop topping off when:
1) you reach the first click
2) a little leaks out of the tank
3) round to the nearest dollar
4) round to the nearest $0.25
5) round to the nearest $0.10
6) round to the nearest $0.05

One click after the auto-shutoff. Any more and you risk spilling the liquid gold.

Round out to the nearest dollar, and then ad a dollar more.

I go until it's full. Once the pump starts, there's about a gallon left to go.

I like topping off to an odd ball price, but not to full in the summer.

I use a credit card so when it clicks I stop.

In the "old days" I'd round it off. Back then it seems that I could squeeze in almost a gallon more after the nozzle clicked off.

These days, even when I intentionally try to top off, I can add barely a few cents of gasoline. OH BUT WAIT - that's probably almost a gallon at these prices ;-)

After the click , then I round it to the next dollar amount. Cussing is involved if it slips to the next dollar plus one cent.

I usually squeeze in one more click, anymore and you risk spilling the liquid gold as the tank can overfill.

When it clicks. Unless the air venting system of the pump doesn't work well, you're full enough when it clicks the first time.

I round to the next 50 cents or dollar depending on where the pump stops. If it stops between .01 - .49 i'll go to .50. If it stops at .51 - .99 i'll go to the even dollar. That's about all that you can put into the automobile I have now. When I had my f-150 pick-ups I could put almost another gallon into them after the pump clicked off but only went to the next dollar no matter where it click off to avoid spilling.

None of the above! :)

I drive an older diesel VW. There is no need for the complex vapor recovery system like in gas engined cars, so VW left it out. Consequently, there's no harm in filling the tank all the way up the filler neck and to the top! But not to spilling, that's wasteful.

Also, the tank is expandable. There's a little "button" (removed on new diesel VWs, unfortunately) that vents excess air (unlike gas, diesel fumes are not dangerous or as harmful to the environment) and it allows me to get about 2 to 2.5 gallons of extra fuel in.

This may not sound like much, but it yields an easy 90-110 extra miles per tank; the fuel gauge doesn't even move off of full for over 220 miles!

I stop when the pump kicks off. I have heard that pumping additional fuel can cause issues.
